Chapter 10: The Father Who Came Back With Answers
For eight years, I imagined what I would say if my father ever came back.
I imagined anger.
I imagined questions.
I imagined telling him how much his disappearance had hurt me.
But when he stood in my doorway, older and exhausted, all I felt was confusion.
Because the man I had spent years blaming was standing in front of me…
And the man I trusted was standing behind me with secrets.
My father looked at Ethan.
“You told her.””
It wasn’t a question.
Ethan’s face tightened.
“Leave.””
My father gave a small, bitter smile.
“Still protecting yourself?””
I looked between them.
“Someone explain what is happening.””
Neither man spoke.
Then Daniel stepped forward.
“I think everyone owes Sarah the truth.””
My father nodded.
“You’re right.””
He slowly walked into the house.
The same house he had once known belonged to my grandmother.
The same house where he believed he had lost everything.
Patricia stood near the table, completely silent.
For once, she had nothing cruel to say.
My father looked at her.
“You’re Patricia.””
She looked surprised.
“You know me?””
“I know more than you think.””
I felt a chill.
“Dad.””
He looked at me.
His expression softened.
And for the first time in years, I saw the father I remembered.
Not the man who left.
The man who used to carry me on his shoulders.
“Sarah, I know you hate me.””
My eyes burned.
“You don’t know anything about how I feel.””
He nodded.
“You’re right.””
The honesty caught me off guard.
“I deserve that.””
Nobody spoke.
He continued.
“But you deserve to know why I disappeared.””
I crossed my arms.
“Then tell me.””
He took a deep breath.
“The night your mother died wasn’t an accident.””
The room went silent.
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Ethan looked down.
Like he had heard those words before.
My father continued.
“Your mother discovered what I was doing.””
I stared.
“What you were doing?””
He closed his eyes.
“I made mistakes.””
The words sounded familiar.
Too familiar.
But his voice carried something Ethan’s never had.
Regret.
“I was desperate,” he said.
“For what?””
“The inheritance.””
I felt sick.
Even after everything, hearing it from him still hurt.
“You wanted Grandma’s money.””
“Yes.””
The answer was immediate.
No excuses.
No pretending.
“Yes.””
I looked away.
“At least you admit it.””
He nodded.
“I thought money would fix everything.””
“And did it?””
His eyes filled with shame.
“No.””
The room was quiet.
Then he looked at Ethan.
“But your husband knows the part I don’t.””
Ethan looked up.
“What?””
My father’s expression hardened.
“You were there when your mother confronted me.””
I turned toward Ethan.
“Is that true?””
Ethan looked frozen.
“Sarah…”
“Answer me.””
He swallowed.
“Yes.””
The word felt heavier than anything else that night.
My hands trembled.
“You watched my mother confront my father?””
“Yes.””
“And you never told me?””
“I tried.””
I stared.
“You tried?””
He shook his head.
“I was scared.””
“Everyone is always scared.””
My voice broke.
“But nobody is scared enough to tell me the truth.””
Ethan looked destroyed.
My father stepped closer.
“He didn’t tell you because he knew what happened next.””
I turned.
“What happened next?””
My father looked at Ethan.
And Ethan looked away.
That was the answer.
My chest tightened.
“Ethan.””
He whispered:
“Your mother found the documents.””
“What documents?””
“The ones proving your grandmother changed the inheritance.””
Daniel immediately looked up.
“Changed it how?””
Ethan hesitated.
My father answered.
“She removed me from everything.””
I stared.
“Why?””
My father looked at the floor.
“Because she discovered I was using Sarah.””
The words hurt.
Even though they were about him.
Even though they were old.
Because suddenly I understood.
My grandmother had known.
She had protected me.
And everyone else had tried to get around her.
My father continued.
“Your mother wanted to expose me.””
“And then?””
His face became painful.
“Then the car accident happened.””
I felt the room spin.
“What are you saying?””
He looked at me.
“I didn’t cause it.””
Nobody moved.
“But Ethan knows something about that night.””
I turned slowly.
Toward my husband.
His face had gone completely white.
“What does he know?””
Ethan opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then my father said the words that changed everything.
“Your mother’s car wasn’t the only vehicle there.””
I looked at Ethan.
“Whose car was there?””
Ethan closed his eyes.
May you like
And whispered:
“Mine.””
