Chapter 8: The Deal Behind My Marriage

I used to believe marriages ended because of one huge betrayal.

One affair.

One lie.

One unforgivable moment.

I was wrong.

Sometimes a marriage dies slowly.

One secret at a time.

Ethan sat at the table, staring at the documents.

The confidence was gone.

The excuses were gone.

Now there was only fear.

“Tell me,” I said.

My voice was calm.

That scared him more than anger would have.

“Sarah…”

“No.””

I shook my head.

“Not this time.””

He looked at me.

“You owe me the truth.””

For several seconds, he didn’t speak.

Then he whispered:

“When I met you, I knew about the inheritance.””

The words felt like a physical blow.

I stared at him.

“What?””

Patricia covered her mouth.

Daniel stayed silent.

Because he knew this was something I needed to hear.

Ethan continued.

“My father worked with someone who knew your grandmother.””

I felt numb.

“You knew before our first date?””

He looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

Everything around me became blurry.

The restaurant where he proposed.

The apartment where we spent our first year.

The nights he told me I was the best thing that ever happened to him.

How much of it was real?

“How did you know?””

He looked down.

“Your father told me.””

My breath stopped.

“My father?””

“Yes.””

The room went quiet.

Daniel slowly leaned forward.

“Why would her father tell you?””

Ethan rubbed his hands together.

“He wanted access.””

“To her inheritance?””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“So both of you used me.””

“No.””

His answer came quickly.

“I didn’t start that way.””

I almost laughed.

“That’s supposed to make me feel better?””

He shook his head.

“I loved you.””

I looked at him.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Because that was the only question that mattered.

Why?

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because after I got to know you… everything changed.””

I said nothing.

“I wasn’t with you because of the money anymore.””

I looked at him.

“But you stayed because of the money.””

He didn’t deny it.

And that hurt more.

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Mr. Carter, did your father-in-law ever threaten you?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Yes.””

“What did he threaten?””

Ethan looked at me.

“He said if I didn’t help him get access to the trust, he would expose everything.””

“Everything?””

Ethan swallowed.

“The truth about how we met.””

My hands went cold.

“How we met?””

I remembered.

A charity event.

A friend introducing us.

A conversation that felt completely natural.

But now…

Was it planned?

“Was our meeting arranged?””

Ethan closed his eyes.

That was all I needed.

I stepped back.

“No.””

“Sarah…”

“No.””

My voice broke.

“I need you to say it.””

He looked at me.

“I was introduced to you because of your father.””

The room went silent.

Eight years of my life.

Eight years.

And the beginning had been a lie.

I grabbed the back of a chair.

“How could you?””

He stood.

“I fell in love with you.””

“But you never trusted me enough to tell me the truth.””

“I was scared.””

“You were scared?””

I pointed toward the documents.

“You forged my name.””

He lowered his eyes.

“I know.””

“You stole from me.””

“I know.””

“You watched your mother hurt me.””

His face tightened.

“I know.””

I nodded slowly.

“Then you know why I can’t believe anything you say.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Daniel’s phone rang again.

He answered.

His face changed immediately.

“What?””

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“Sarah…”

I knew from his expression.

It was bad.

“What happened?””

Daniel ended the call.

“The person who contacted me wasn’t your father.””

I frowned.

“But you said the messages came from him.””

“They did.””

“Then who called?””

Daniel looked at Ethan.

“The police.””

My heart dropped.

“Why?””

Daniel took a breath.

“They found evidence connecting your father to financial fraud.””

I stared.

“And Ethan?””

Nobody answered.

That silence told me enough.

Daniel slowly said:

“They believe your husband may have been involved.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“Sarah, listen to me.””

But I couldn’t.

Because suddenly I wasn’t just questioning my marriage.

I was questioning everything.

And then my phone received a message.

From an unknown number.

I looked down.

One sentence appeared on the screen.

*“Ask Ethan what happened the night your mother died.””*
