Chapter 6: The Secret Between Mother and Son

Nobody moved.

Not even Patricia.

The accusation stayed in the air.

Like smoke after a fire.

I slowly turned toward her.

“Is that true?””

Patricia looked at Ethan.

Not me.

Him.

And that told me everything.

Because if she had no idea what he was talking about, she would have immediately defended herself.

Instead, she looked terrified.

“Patricia?””

Her lips parted.

“I…”

She stopped.

That one hesitation destroyed the last piece of trust I had left.

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“Go ahead, Mom.””

“Ethan, don’t.””

“No. You wanted this.””

Patricia looked smaller than I had ever seen her.

The woman who had walked into my house like she owned it.

The woman who had judged every meal, every decision, every mistake.

Now she couldn’t even look at me.

Daniel crossed his arms.

“I think everyone should be honest.””

Patricia sat down.

Slowly.

“I didn’t know everything.””

I stared at her.

“But you knew something.””

She looked away.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“How much?””

She didn’t answer.

“How much did you know?””

Finally, she whispered:

“I knew Ethan was having financial problems.””

I laughed quietly.

“Financial problems?””

She looked ashamed.

“I knew he borrowed money.””

“And you thought that was okay?””

“No.””

“Then why did you help him?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Because he is my son.””

The words hurt.

Not because they surprised me.

Because they sounded so familiar.

The same excuse Ethan had used.

She’s my mother.

He’s my son.

Everyone had someone they protected.

Except me.

Patricia looked at the floor.

“He told me he was trying to save the house.””

I looked around the room.

“My house.””

She nodded.

“I didn’t know he was using your name.””

“But you knew he was hiding things from me.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

I stepped back.

For years, I wondered why Patricia hated me.

Why she always found something wrong.

Why she treated every moment with me like a competition.

Now I understood.

She wasn’t trying to replace me.

She was helping Ethan control me.

Ethan suddenly spoke.

“Sarah, please.””

I looked at him.

“Please what?””

“Don’t let this destroy everything.””

I stared at him.

“You destroyed it.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I made mistakes.””

I shook my head.

“You keep saying that.””

He stepped closer.

“I love you.””

The words almost made me angry.

Almost.

Because love was not what I needed.

Love was not a sentence.

Love was not something you said after someone discovered your lies.

I looked directly into his eyes.

“If you loved me, you would have protected me.””

He had no answer.

Daniel checked his watch.

“Sarah, we should leave soon.””

Ethan’s expression changed.

“Leave?””

“Yes.””

I nodded.

For the first time that night, I understood something important.

I didn’t need to fight for my place in my own home.

I already had it.

Ethan did.

Patricia did.

They were the ones who had to explain themselves.

I walked toward the stairs.

Then Ethan said something that made me stop.

“Sarah.””

I turned.

His face was pale.

“You don’t know the worst part yet.””

I stared at him.

“What worst part?””

He looked down.

And for the first time, I saw real fear.

Not fear of losing money.

Not fear of losing the house.

Fear of what I would discover next.

He whispered:

“The reason I needed that money…”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why?””

Ethan looked at Patricia.

Then back at me.

“Because someone was threatening to expose us.””

The room went silent.

“Us?””

He nodded.

And before I could ask another question, Daniel’s phone rang.

He answered.

Then his face changed.

“Are you sure?””

A pause.

Then he looked at me.

“Sarah…”

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Daniel lowered the phone.

“The person who has been sending threats…”

He took a breath.

“It’s someone who knows your family.””

I froze.

“Who?””

Daniel looked toward the front door.

May you like

And said a name I never expected to hear.

“Your father.””
