Chapter 8: The Lie She Told My Daughter

I don't remember driving to Evelyn's house.

I only remember Daniel sitting beside me, calling everyone he knew.

Police.

Family.

Anyone who would listen.

But inside my head, there was only one thought.

Sophie was alone with Evelyn.

The woman who had already proven she could cross any line.

When we arrived, Evelyn's house looked exactly the same.

Beautiful.

Quiet.

Perfect.

Like nothing terrible could happen inside.

I ran to the front door.

It opened before I knocked.

Evelyn stood there.

Calm.

Almost smiling.

"Sarah.""

My voice shook.

"Where is my daughter?""

She tilted her head.

"She is safe.""

"Where is she?""

"Upstairs.""

I pushed past her.

Daniel grabbed my arm.

"Wait.""

I turned.

"What?""

His eyes were locked on his mother.

"Mom, what are you doing?""

Evelyn sighed.

"Protecting my granddaughter.""

I stared at her.

"You kidnapped my child.""

Her expression hardened.

"Don't use dramatic words.""

"Dramatic?""

I stepped closer.

"You took her without permission.""

"I picked her up because she was scared.""

"Scared of what?""

Evelyn looked directly at me.

"You.""

The room went cold.

"What?""

She smiled sadly.

"She told me you were upset. That you were making everyone fight.""

I couldn't believe what I was hearing.

"You lied to her.""

"No.""

"Yes.""

Daniel stepped forward.

"Mom, stop.""

Evelyn looked at him.

"After everything I've done for you?""

His face changed.

That sentence hurt him.

Because he knew exactly what she meant.

Everything had always been a transaction.

Love with conditions.

Family with control.

Then Sophie appeared at the top of the stairs.

"Mommy?""

I ran.

I didn't care about anything else.

I grabbed her and held her.

"Oh my God.""

She hugged me back.

"I told Grandma I wanted to call you.""

I looked at Evelyn.

"What did you tell her?""

Sophie looked uncomfortable.

"Grandma said you were angry and needed time.""

My stomach turned.

"Did she say anything else?""

Sophie hesitated.

Then whispered:

"She said if I stayed with you, you might make me sick again.""

The words hit like a physical blow.

I looked at Evelyn.

"You told my daughter I would hurt her?""

Evelyn crossed her arms.

"I told her the truth.""

Daniel stepped between us.

"No, Mom.""

Everyone stopped.

Because Daniel had finally raised his voice at her.

"No more.""

Evelyn stared at him.

"Excuse me?""

"You don't get to do this anymore.""

Her expression changed.

"You would choose her over your own mother?""

Daniel looked at Sophie.

Then at me.

"I should have chosen them a long time ago.""

For a second, I saw something I had never seen before.

Evelyn looked afraid.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Then she smiled.

A small, cold smile.

"Okay.""

She reached for her phone.

"Let's see how brave you are when everyone hears the truth.""

Daniel frowned.

"What are you talking about?""

She pressed something on the screen.

A recording began playing.

My voice.

Again.

But this time, edited.

Cut together.

Made to sound different.

It was the recording from years ago.

My panic.

My tears.

My fear.

But the parts where Evelyn manipulated me were gone.

The room filled with my own broken voice.

"I can't do this...""

"I don't know if I'm a good mother...""

Sophie looked at me.

Her face fell.

"Mom?""

I reached for her.

"No, sweetheart.""

Evelyn smiled.

"This is what I've been trying to show everyone.""

Daniel looked horrified.

"Mom, you edited it.""

She shrugged.

"I made people hear what was really happening.""

"No.""

Daniel shook his head.

"You made them hear what you wanted.""

Then the front door opened.

Everyone turned.

A police officer walked in with Rachel behind him.

"Evelyn Carter?""

Her smile disappeared.

The officer continued.

"We need to ask you some questions about the unauthorized removal of a child.""

Evelyn looked at me.

"This isn't over.""

I held Sophie's hand.

For the first time, I didn't feel afraid.

Because Evelyn had spent years collecting evidence.

She just forgot one thing.

Evidence could reveal the truth.

Not hide it.

As the officer escorted her outside, Rachel approached me.

"Sarah.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

She held up her phone.

"We found something else.""

My heart sank.

"What?""

Rachel looked at Daniel.

May you like

Then back at me.

"The peanut butter jar wasn't the first attempt.""
