Chapter 5: The Husband Who Chose His Mother
I drove home without remembering most of the trip.
My mind replayed every conversation I had ever had with Daniel.
Every time he told me I was too protective.
Every time he said his mother meant well.
Every time he asked me to be patient.
I had spent years wondering why I always felt alone in my marriage.
Now I knew.
Because I was.
I walked into the house and found Daniel sitting at the kitchen table.
He looked up.
He knew.
Somehow, he knew.
"Where did you go?""
I placed the folder on the table.
His face changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
"You met Claire.""
I stared at him.
"You knew she had these.""
Daniel stood.
"Sarah, listen to me.""
"No.""
My voice was calm.
That scared him.
"No more explanations until you answer one question.""
He swallowed.
"What?""
"Did you sign papers to take my daughter away from me?""
His silence lasted three seconds.
But those three seconds destroyed everything.
"Daniel.""
He looked down.
"I never wanted it to happen.""
I laughed.
"You never wanted it to happen?""
I opened the folder.
"You signed it.""
"I signed something Mom gave me.""
"You signed legal documents about our daughter without telling me.""
"I thought it was just a backup.""
"A backup?""
My voice rose.
"Like I was a problem you needed protection from?""
Daniel stepped closer.
"No. Sarah, I was scared.""
I looked at him.
"Of what?""
He rubbed his face.
"That you were getting worse.""
I stared at him.
"Worse?""
"You were always worried. Always checking. Always asking people about ingredients.""
I felt tears burning my eyes.
"I was keeping her alive.""
"I know.""
"No, you don't.""
He looked away.
And that was when I realized something.
Daniel didn't hate me.
That almost made it worse.
Because he had betrayed me while still loving me.
"I should have stopped Mom," he whispered.
"Yes.""
"I should have told you.""
"Yes.""
"I should have never signed anything.""
I looked at him.
"But you did.""
He nodded.
"I did.""
The honesty almost broke me.
Almost.
Then I noticed something.
"Why did you pay your mother $25,000?""
His face changed.
"What?""
"Don't lie.""
I put the bank statement on the table.
Daniel stared at it.
Then he sat down.
"I didn't pay her for what you think.""
"Then tell me.""
He stayed quiet.
"Daniel.""
Finally, he whispered:
"Mom said she needed money for a lawyer.""
My stomach dropped.
"A lawyer for what?""
He didn't answer.
I already knew.
"For custody.""
Daniel closed his eyes.
"I thought she was just trying to scare you.""
I stepped back.
"You keep saying that.""
He looked at me.
"Because it's true.""
"No.""
I shook my head.
"You say that because it makes you feel less guilty.""
His expression broke.
"I never wanted Sophie hurt.""
I looked at him.
"But you accepted the possibility.""
He had no response.
The next morning, I received a call from my attorney.
The one I had contacted after leaving Evelyn's house.
"Sarah, I reviewed the documents you sent.""
My heart raced.
"And?""
There was a pause.
"There's something unusual.""
"What?""
"The custody paperwork isn't the only thing Daniel signed.""
I sat down.
"What else?""
"He signed a financial agreement with Evelyn.""
"What kind of agreement?""
My attorney lowered his voice.
"One that transfers a large portion of your shared assets if you separate.""
I stared out the window.
The world suddenly felt unfamiliar.
My husband hadn't just been listening to his mother.
He had been preparing.
Preparing for me to leave.
Preparing for a fight.
Preparing for a life without me.
That evening, Daniel came home and found me packing a small bag.
"Where are you going?""
I didn't turn around.
"Somewhere Sophie and I are safe.""
His voice cracked.
"Sarah, please.""
I zipped the bag.
"Did you ever plan to tell me?""
"Tell you what?""
I looked at him.
"That you were building a life where I wasn't included.""
Daniel stepped forward.
"I love you.""
I shook my head.
"Love without loyalty is just a word.""
He looked devastated.
Then his phone rang.
He checked the screen.
And immediately went pale.
"What is it?""
He didn't answer.
The message on his phone was from Evelyn.
Only six words.
But they changed everything.
*"She knows about the recording. Fix this.""*
Daniel looked at me.
May you like
And for the first time...
He looked afraid of his mother.
