Chapter 6: The Recording Nobody Was Supposed To Hear

Daniel didn't sleep that night.

Neither did I.

We stayed in separate rooms, separated by a hallway that somehow felt wider than an ocean.

At 3:00 a.m., I heard him talking on the phone.

I quietly opened my door.

His voice was low.

"Mom, you need to stop.""

A pause.

"No, this went too far.""

Another pause.

Then:

"Because Sophie could have died.""

I froze.

For the first time, Daniel said the words out loud.

Sophie could have died.

Not a misunderstanding.

Not an accident.

Not a dramatic reaction.

The truth.

I stepped back before he saw me.

The next morning, I found him sitting on the couch.

He looked older.

Broken.

"I need to tell you everything.""

I stood across from him.

"Start with the recording.""

His eyes widened.

"You know?""

"I know there is one.""

Daniel looked down.

"My mother recorded conversations.""

"Why?""

"She thought she needed proof.""

"Proof of what?""

He swallowed.

"That you were unstable.""

I felt anger rise again.

"What conversation?""

He didn't answer.

"Daniel.""

He looked at me.

"The one where you cried after Sophie's first allergic reaction.""

My chest tightened.

She had recorded that?

Years ago?

The worst night of my life?

"Why would she keep that?""

"To use against you.""

I walked away.

The cruelty of it was almost impossible to understand.

My pain had become evidence.

My fear had become a weapon.

"Where is it?""

Daniel hesitated.

"I don't know.""

That answer bothered me.

"You don't know?""

"Mom keeps backups of everything.""

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Claire.

*"I found the recording.""*

Attached was an audio file.

I pressed play.

At first, there was only background noise.

Then my own voice.

Crying.

Panicked.

"I can't lose her, Daniel.""

A younger version of me.

A terrified mother.

Then Evelyn's voice.

Cold.

Calm.

"See? This is what I'm talking about.""

The recording continued.

"I think Sarah needs help," Evelyn said.

"She is letting fear control everything.""

Then Daniel's younger voice.

"I know.""

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The moment everything started.

But then the recording changed.

A different day.

A different conversation.

Evelyn's voice again.

"Once Sophie reacts, Daniel will finally understand.""

My eyes opened.

"What?""

Daniel looked at me.

The recording continued.

"I don't want anything serious," Evelyn said.

"Just enough to prove a point.""

Then Daniel's voice.

"Mom, don't do anything dangerous.""

A pause.

Then Evelyn replied:

"You worry too much.""

The audio ended.

The room was silent.

Daniel looked sick.

I looked at him.

"You knew.""

He started crying.

"I didn't know she would use peanuts.""

"But you knew she planned something.""

He couldn't deny it.

I picked up my bag.

"Where are you going?""

"To protect my daughter.""

"Sarah, please.""

I stopped at the door.

"What?""

His voice shook.

"Can I fix this?""

I looked at the man I married.

The father of my child.

The person who should have protected us first.

"I don't know.""

Then I walked away.

But before I reached my car, another message appeared.

This time from Evelyn.

A photo.

Of Sophie leaving school.

My blood turned cold.

The message said:

*"If you think you can destroy me, remember who knows where your daughter is every day.""*

I stared at the screen.

And I understood.

Evelyn wasn't afraid of losing her family.

She was afraid of losing control.

May you like

And now she had decided to stop pretending.

She had declared war.
