Chapter 7: The Woman Who Watched From The Shadows
I didn't sleep after Evelyn's message.
Not because I was afraid of her.
Because I was afraid of what she might do next.
The photo of Sophie leaving school stayed open on my phone screen all night.
Evelyn wanted me to know she was watching.
She wanted me to feel powerless.
But she made one mistake.
She reminded me exactly why I had to fight.
My daughter.
The next morning, I arrived at school before the final bell.
I waited near the entrance, watching parents pick up their children.
When Sophie walked out, she smiled the second she saw me.
"Mommy?""
I opened my arms.
She ran toward me.
I held her tighter than usual.
"Are you okay?""
She nodded.
"Why wouldn't I be?""
I looked at her innocent face.
Because someone tried to hurt you.
Because someone who was supposed to love you almost destroyed our lives.
But I didn't say those words.
Instead, I kissed her forehead.
"Because I missed you.""
She smiled.
"I missed you too.""
On the drive home, I kept checking the rearview mirror.
Sophie noticed.
"Mom?""
"Yeah?""
"Are we in trouble?""
The question broke my heart.
"No, sweetheart.""
"Then why do you keep looking behind us?""
I gripped the steering wheel.
"Because sometimes adults make bad choices.""
She was quiet.
Then she said something I didn't expect.
"Like Grandma?""
My hands tightened.
"Sophie...""
"I heard you and Dad talking.""
I glanced at her.
"What did you hear?""
She looked out the window.
"That Grandma wanted me to get sick.""
The silence afterward felt unbearable.
I pulled into a parking lot and stopped the car.
"Sophie, listen to me.""
She looked at me.
"This was never your fault.""
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I know.""
"Do you?""
She nodded.
"Grandma was wrong. But I don't want you to be sad.""
That was Sophie.
Even after everything.
She was worried about me.
I reached across the seat and held her hand.
"You are the bravest person I know.""
That evening, I met with my attorney again.
Her name was Rachel.
She spread several documents across the table.
"Sarah, we need to move carefully.""
"Because of Evelyn?""
"Because of everyone involved.""
She pointed to the custody documents.
"These papers were designed to make you look unstable.""
I stared at them.
"What can she actually do?""
"Right now? Not much.""
"But?""
Rachel hesitated.
"But if Daniel supports her claims, it changes things.""
My chest tightened.
Daniel.
Even after everything, he was still the person standing between me and losing my daughter.
"Can he take Sophie away?""
Rachel looked directly at me.
"Not based on these documents alone.""
I nodded.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from Daniel.
*"Please meet me. Alone. I need to tell you something.""*
I almost ignored it.
Almost.
But Rachel saw my expression.
"Who is it?""
"Daniel.""
She studied me.
"If you go, record everything.""
I looked at her.
"Is it really that bad?""
She didn't answer.
That night, I met Daniel at a quiet park.
The same park where we used to take Sophie for ice cream.
The memories felt cruel now.
Daniel stood beside the empty playground.
"I didn't know if you'd come.""
"I almost didn't.""
He nodded.
"I deserve that.""
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then he handed me an envelope.
"What is this?""
"Something my mother doesn't know I have.""
I opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
From Evelyn.
My eyes moved across the page.
It wasn't addressed to me.
It was addressed to Daniel.
The first line made my stomach drop.
*"Once Sarah is out of the picture, Sophie will finally have the family she deserves.""*
I looked up.
Daniel looked ashamed.
"How long have you had this?""
"Two weeks.""
"Two weeks?""
He closed his eyes.
"I found it in Mom's office.""
"And you still protected her.""
"No.""
His voice broke.
"I was trying to understand how far she had gone.""
I shook my head.
"You keep saying you were trying.""
"I know.""
"No. You don't.""
I held up the letter.
"Every time something happened, you waited for more proof.""
Daniel looked down.
"And Sophie paid the price.""
He nodded.
Tears filled his eyes.
"Yes.""
For the first time, I saw him stop defending himself.
Not his mother.
Not his choices.
Just the truth.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
"What?""
I watched him listen.
Then he whispered:
"Mom, where are you?""
A pause.
His expression turned pale.
"What do you mean you have Sophie?""
My heart stopped.
I grabbed his phone.
The call had already ended.
I stared at him.
"What did she just say?""
Daniel looked terrified.
"I don't know.""
"Daniel.""
He swallowed.
"She said she picked Sophie up from school.""
The world went silent.
Because Sophie was supposed to be with my sister.
Not Evelyn.
Not anyone else.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Evelyn?""
A child's voice came through.
Not Sophie's.
A boy's.
Noah.
"Sarah...""
His voice was shaking.
May you like
"Grandma took Sophie because she said you were going to hurt her.""
My blood ran cold.
