Chapter 4: The Document I Was Never Supposed To See

I sat in my car outside Evelyn's neighborhood for almost ten minutes, staring at the message on my phone.

A photo.

A document.

A warning.

My hands felt cold as I opened the attachment again.

The image was blurry, but one line was clear.

*"Parental decision authority agreement.""*

Below it was Daniel's signature.

My signature was missing.

I zoomed in until the words became distorted.

I still understood enough.

It was a legal document.

A document that appeared to give Daniel and his mother control over decisions involving Sophie.

My stomach twisted.

Why would Daniel sign something like this?

And why did someone send it to me?

My phone buzzed again.

Another message.

*"Meet me tomorrow. Bring no one. You need to know the rest.""*

I should have ignored it.

A stranger asking to meet privately wasn't exactly the definition of safety.

But after everything that happened, I had learned one thing.

Secrets were where people got hurt.

So the next morning, I went.

The coffee shop was quiet, tucked away on a street far from Evelyn's neighborhood.

I sat near the window, watching every person who walked in.

Then I saw her.

Daniel's younger sister, Claire.

She looked exhausted.

Like she hadn't slept in days.

She sat across from me and placed a folder on the table.

"You shouldn't have come alone.""

I stared at her.

"You're the one who told me to.""

Claire looked down.

"I know.""

"Why?""

She took a breath.

"Because I was afraid.""

I almost laughed.

"Everyone in your family keeps saying that.""

Her eyes filled with guilt.

"I was afraid of my mother.""

I looked at the folder.

"What's inside?""

Claire didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she said, "How much did Daniel tell you?""

I felt my jaw tighten.

"Nothing.""

She nodded sadly.

"That's what I thought.""

She opened the folder.

Inside were printed emails.

Medical records.

Legal forms.

I picked up the first page.

My heart stopped.

It was from almost a year earlier.

A conversation between Daniel and Evelyn.

The subject line read:

*"Sarah's behavior getting worse.""*

I started reading.

Evelyn had written:

"She is making Sophie afraid of normal life. Someone needs to step in before Sarah damages her emotionally.""

My fingers tightened around the paper.

Then I saw Daniel's response.

"I know. I'm trying to handle it.""

I looked up.

"Handle it?""

Claire looked away.

"He believed her.""

I flipped through more pages.

There were messages about me.

About my parenting.

About my anxiety.

About how I was "controlling.""

But then I found something worse.

A message from Daniel.

"If Mom documents enough examples, maybe we can convince Sarah to let Sophie spend more time with us.""

My vision blurred.

"More time?""

Claire whispered.

"Mom wanted custody.""

The word hit harder than I expected.

Custody.

Of my daughter.

"Why?""

Claire swallowed.

"Because she thinks you ruined Daniel.""

I stared at her.

"What does that even mean?""

"Before you came into his life, Daniel did whatever Mom wanted.""

I looked back at the papers.

The pieces started connecting.

The comments.

The pressure.

The constant criticism.

It wasn't random.

It was preparation.

"They were building a case against me.""

Claire nodded.

"I'm sorry.""

I laughed softly.

Not because it was funny.

Because I didn't know what else to do.

"My daughter almost died, and while she was in the hospital, your brother was worried about proving I was a bad mother?""

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

"He wasn't supposed to let it go this far.""

I looked at her.

"Then what was supposed to happen?""

She hesitated.

That hesitation scared me.

"Claire.""

She looked at me.

"Mom wanted Sophie to have a reaction.""

My entire body froze.

"What?""

"She wanted Daniel to see that your rules were extreme. She thought if Sophie had a small scare, everyone would realize you were overreacting.""

I pushed my chair back.

"A small scare?""

Claire immediately reached for my hand.

"I know.""

"No, you don't.""

My voice shook.

"You don't know what it sounds like when your child says she can't breathe.""

Claire started crying.

"I know I failed you.""

I looked at the folder again.

"Why are you showing me this now?""

She wiped her face.

"Because after seeing the video, Daniel finally realized what he did.""

I stared at her.

"Is he sorry?""

Claire didn't answer.

That told me enough.

I stood up.

"I need to go.""

"Sarah.""

I stopped.

Claire pulled out one more document.

"This is why I contacted you.""

I looked down.

It was a bank transfer.

From Daniel.

To Evelyn.

The amount made my chest tighten.

"$25,000?""

Claire nodded.

"Three days before the dinner.""

I stared at the date.

Three days before Sophie almost died.

"Why did he send her that much money?""

Claire whispered:

"Because he was paying for something.""

I looked at her.

"What?""

Her voice dropped.

"Something Mom said would make you leave.""

I felt a chill move through me.

"Claire...""

May you like

She looked terrified.

"I think Daniel knew more about that dinner than he admitted.""
