Chapter 3: The Secret Behind The Camera

Nobody spoke for several seconds.

The paused image on the television hung over the room like a storm cloud.

Evelyn's hand was around the jar.

The frosting bowl was on the counter.

And standing in the doorway behind her was someone nobody expected.

Daniel.

My husband.

My heart dropped before my mind could even understand it.

"No," I whispered.

Daniel stepped back.

"Sarah, wait.""

I stared at him.

"You were there?""

His face changed instantly.

Not anger.

Not confusion.

Fear.

"I can explain.""

The room exploded.

"What do you mean you can explain?"" Daniel's father asked.

His sister covered her mouth.

Evelyn stood up.

"Everyone needs to leave.""

Nobody moved.

For months, I had wondered why Daniel had frozen that night.

Why he hadn't defended me.

Why he had begged me to let it go.

I thought he was afraid of his mother.

I thought he was trying to protect his family.

But maybe he was protecting himself.

I pointed at the screen.

"Tell me why you were in that kitchen.""

Daniel swallowed.

"I wasn't helping her.""

"Then why were you standing there?""

He looked at Evelyn.

She looked away.

That tiny movement told me everything.

"You knew," I said.

Daniel shook his head.

"No.""

"You knew something.""

"I knew my mom was upset.""

"Upset enough to put peanut butter in my daughter's dessert?""

"No!""

His voice cracked.

The entire room went silent.

Daniel looked at the floor.

"I saw her with the jar.""

A cold feeling moved through my chest.

"When?""

"Before dinner.""

I stared at him.

"And you did nothing?""

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

I felt like the room was spinning.

"You saw her.""

"Sarah...""

"You saw her and you let Sophie eat it.""

"I thought she was just trying to scare you.""

Everyone gasped.

Even Evelyn looked at him.

"What did you just say?"" his father asked.

Daniel's face turned red.

"I didn't think she would actually put enough in the frosting.""

I couldn't breathe.

Not because of an allergy.

Because of the betrayal.

I stepped backward.

"You thought my daughter being scared was a lesson?""

"No.""

"You thought an allergic reaction was a way to prove I was overprotective?""

"Sarah, I was wrong.""

Wrong.

That word felt too small.

Too easy.

Evelyn suddenly interrupted.

"Daniel, stop talking.""

I turned toward her.

"Why?""

She looked at me.

"Because this is getting out of control.""

I laughed quietly.

"Getting out of control?""

I walked closer.

"My daughter was taken away in an ambulance.""

Evelyn's expression hardened.

"She survived.""

The room went completely still.

I watched Daniel's father close his eyes.

His sister started crying.

And Daniel looked at his mother like he was seeing her for the first time.

"You said it was an accident," he whispered.

Evelyn looked nervous.

"It was.""

"No.""

Daniel shook his head.

"No, you told me you only wanted Sarah to understand.""

My blood ran cold.

"So you both planned this?""

Daniel looked at me.

"No, Sarah. I didn't know she would hurt Sophie.""

"But you knew she would do something.""

He didn't answer.

That was enough.

I turned off the television.

"I want you to understand something.""

Nobody moved.

"I spent years trying to make this family work. I ignored comments. I ignored insults. I told myself Evelyn was just difficult.""

I looked at Daniel.

"And I told myself you were just caught in the middle.""

My voice broke.

"But you weren't caught in the middle.""

Daniel looked devastated.

"You chose a side.""

He whispered my name.

"Sarah...""

"No.""

I grabbed my coat.

"I'm done listening to explanations.""

As I reached the door, Evelyn spoke.

"You think this ends here?""

I stopped.

She sounded different now.

Not angry.

Desperate.

"You have no idea what happens when you destroy this family.""

I turned around.

"Maybe this family was already destroyed.""

I walked outside.

But before I reached my car, my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

I opened it.

There was a photo attached.

A photo of a document.

And beneath it, one sentence:

*"You need to see what Daniel signed before you decide what he deserves.""*

I stared at the screen.

May you like

Then I looked back at Evelyn's house.

Because suddenly, I wasn't sure if the peanut butter had been the only secret my husband was hiding.
