Chapter 9: The Name in the Past
I couldn’t speak.
The voice on the phone was calm.
Too calm.
Like he wasn’t calling to scare me.
Like he already knew he had my attention.
“Who is this?””
The man didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“You really don’t remember me, do you?””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“I don’t know you.””
A quiet laugh.
“That’s what Ethan wanted.””
Daniel moved closer.
I put the call on speaker.
Thomas immediately looked alarmed.
“Hang up.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
The voice continued.
“Ethan lied to you.””
My heart raced.
“Where is he?””
Silence.
Then:
“You still think he abandoned you.””
I felt tears building.
“Tell me where he is.””
The man ignored the question.
“He was trying to protect you.””
“From you?””
Another pause.
“From my family.””
Everyone went silent.
I looked at Thomas.
He nodded slowly.
Alexander.
It had to be him.
“Why are you contacting me?””
The man sighed.
“Because you have something that belongs to us.””
I looked at the metal box.
The key.
The letter.
“What?””
“My father’s records.””
I felt confused.
“I don’t have anything.””
“You have Ethan’s box.””
“How do you know that?””
No answer.
That was enough.
He was watching.
I felt a chill.
“You’re threatening my family?””
“No.””
His voice changed.
Almost softer.
“I’m warning you.””
“Warning me about what?””
“About what happens when you open that box.””
Then the call ended.
Nobody moved.
Finally, Daniel spoke.
“We need to leave.””
My mother shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She stood slowly.
“If we run, we lose.””
“Mom.””
She looked at me.
“I spent seven years protecting Caleb.””
Her voice cracked.
“But I’m tired of hiding.””
That was the first time I saw how much this had cost her.
The forty dollars.
The secrets.
The fear.
She wasn’t protecting a secret.
She was protecting my son.
The next morning, we went to the bank.
The safety deposit box was under Ethan’s name.
But because of the legal documents he left behind, I was listed as the person who could access it.
When the bank employee opened the box, nobody spoke.
Inside was a small folder.
A flash drive.
And a letter.
My hands trembled as I picked up the letter.
Emily,
If you’re reading this, I need you to understand something.
I never left because I stopped loving you.
I left because I found out someone close to me was planning to use Caleb to control me.
I stopped.
I couldn’t read anymore.
Daniel touched my shoulder.
“Keep going.””
I forced myself.
Ethan wrote about Alexander.
About the family.
About how they wanted access to information Ethan discovered.
But then came the part that changed everything.
Caleb was connected to something they wanted.
Not because of who he was.
Because of what Ethan had hidden.
I looked at Thomas.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas looked terrified.
Before he could answer, the bank employee approached.
“Excuse me.””
We all turned.
“There was one more item.””
“What?””
She held a small sealed envelope.
“This was added to the box yesterday.””
My heart stopped.
“Yesterday?””
She nodded.
“Someone came in.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who?””
The employee looked uncomfortable.
“He said he was family.””
I stared at the envelope.
A new message.
A new warning.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was one sentence.
Only one.
May you like
And when I read it, I felt the entire world shift.
*“Ask your mother why she lied about the day Caleb was born.””*
