Chapter 5: The Man From My Past
I didn’t answer the message.
I couldn’t.
I just stared at the screen until it went dark.
Daniel watched my face.
“What did they say?””
I handed him the phone.
He read the message twice.
Then slowly placed it down.
“Okay.””
That one word told me everything.
He was scared too.
For years, Daniel had been the steady one.
The person who handled problems.
The person who stayed calm when I panicked.
But now even he looked shaken.
The next morning, I made a decision.
I was going to find out the truth before someone else told my son.
I called my mother.
“Did Michael tell you anything else?””
She was quiet.
“No.””
“Mom.””
“He said one thing.””
“What?””
She hesitated.
“He said, ‘You don’t understand who Ethan really was.’”
My chest tightened.
Ethan.
A name I had spent years trying to forget.
I met him when I was young.
He was charming.
Funny.
The kind of person who made everyone feel important.
Until he didn’t.
When I told him I was pregnant, everything changed.
He stopped answering calls.
Stopped showing up.
Then one day, he was just gone.
I raised Caleb without him.
I built a life without him.
And eventually, I stopped waiting.
But apparently, someone else hadn’t.
That afternoon, I drove to the old apartment complex where Ethan and I used to live.
I didn’t even know why I went there.
Maybe I hoped the past would stay buried.
Maybe I wanted proof that I was wrong.
The building looked smaller than I remembered.
The same cracked sidewalk.
The same faded paint.
I stood outside for several minutes before a voice stopped me.
“Are you looking for Ethan?””
I turned around.
An older man stood near the entrance.
“I’m sorry?””
He studied my face.
“You’re Emily, right?””
My stomach dropped.
“How do you know my name?””
He sighed.
“I was Ethan’s neighbor.””
I didn’t answer.
The man looked uncomfortable.
“I wondered if you’d ever come back.””
“Why?””
He looked toward the building.
“Because I knew eventually someone would have to tell you.””
“Tell me what?””
He reached into his pocket and pulled out an old envelope.
My hands went cold.
“I found this after Ethan left.””
I didn’t take it immediately.
“Why didn’t you send it?””
“Because I didn’t know where you were.””
“And now?””
He looked at me.
“Now I think you deserve to know.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
The handwriting was Ethan’s.
My heart pounded.
Emily,
If you’re reading this, something happened and I couldn’t explain it myself.
I stopped reading.
Because those words were impossible.
He didn’t leave because he wanted to.
That was what the letter suggested.
But why?
I kept reading.
He wrote about being afraid.
About someone threatening him.
About a secret involving his family.
Then I reached the final paragraph.
And my hands started shaking.
I found out the truth about Caleb.
I stopped.
My breathing changed.
Caleb?
I read the sentence again.
I found out the truth about Caleb, and I knew they would come after him next.
I dropped the paper.
The neighbor looked worried.
“What did it say?””
I couldn’t answer.
Because suddenly, every strange thing made sense.
The photograph.
The messages.
The forty dollars.
My mother wasn’t just saving money for Caleb.
She was protecting him.
I looked at the old man.
“Who are they?””
He didn’t respond.
He just looked away.
That was when I knew.
He knew something.
“Please,” I said.
His face softened.
“I can’t tell you here.””
“Why?””
“Because if they’re watching you…”
He stopped.
I stepped closer.
“If who is watching me?””
The man looked directly at me.
May you like
Then whispered:
“The people who made Ethan disappear.””
