Chapter 13: The Letter for Caleb

I stared at the paper in my hand.

Ethan’s handwriting.

The same handwriting from the letter that changed everything.

But this one wasn’t addressed to me.

It was addressed to my son.

My seven-year-old son.

I looked at Caleb.

“Where did you find this?””

He shrugged.

“Under my pillow.””

My heart sank.

Nobody in the room spoke.

Daniel gently took the paper from my hand.

“Caleb, buddy, why don’t you go downstairs with Grandma for a minute?””

“But I want to know what it says.””

I forced a smile.

“I know. We’ll read it together.””

He looked uncertain.

Then my mother held out her hand.

“Come on, sweetheart.””

After they left, Daniel opened the letter.

I stood beside him.

The first line was simple.

Caleb,

If you are reading this, I need you to know one thing first.

You were loved from the very beginning.

My eyes filled instantly.

The letter continued.

I know there will be questions. I know there will be things you don’t understand. But none of this changes the most important truth.

Your mother chose you every single day.

I had to stop reading.

Because that was the one thing I needed Caleb to know.

Not the secrets.

Not the names.

Not the money.

Just that.

That I chose him.

Every day.

Daniel continued.

Ethan wrote about the day Caleb was born.

He wrote that when he first held him, he made a promise.

A promise that no matter what happened, Caleb would grow up knowing love.

Then came the part that changed everything.

Caleb,

There are people who may tell you that family is about blood.

They are wrong.

Family is who protects you when nobody is watching.

Family is who stays when things become difficult.

Family is your mother.

I covered my mouth.

Then the letter revealed why Ethan had hidden everything.

He wrote that Alexander believed power came from ownership.

That he believed people were possessions.

But Ethan believed the opposite.

He believed love was a choice.

And that was why he walked away.

Not from us.

For us.

The letter ended with a final sentence.

One day, you may learn where you came from.

But never forget where you belong.

I sat down.

For years, I had carried anger toward Ethan.

I thought he left because he was weak.

Because he didn’t care.

But now I understood.

He had been fighting a battle I never knew existed.

The next morning, Rachel arrived.

She looked exhausted.

But determined.

She stood in my living room looking at Caleb’s drawings on the wall.

“He looks like Ethan.””

I stiffened.

“He is his own person.””

Rachel nodded.

“You’re right.””

That surprised me.

“I spent years thinking blood was everything.””

She looked around the room.

“At some point, I realized I was wrong.””

Daniel crossed his arms.

“Where is Alexander?””

Rachel’s face changed.

“He knows I contacted you.””

My stomach dropped.

“How?””

“He has people everywhere.””

Thomas looked toward the window.

“He always did.””

Rachel handed me a folder.

“This is everything I have.””

I opened it.

Inside were documents about Alexander.

Not secrets.

Not rumors.

Proof of his attempts to manipulate people.

Proof Ethan had collected.

Proof that he wasn’t interested in Caleb as a child.

He was interested in what Caleb represented.

A connection.

A claim.

A way to regain control.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Everyone froze.

I answered.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then a man said:

“You’ve been asking questions.””

My blood ran cold.

Alexander.

“I know who you are.””

A quiet laugh.

“No, Emily. You know what Ethan wanted you to believe.””

“What do you want?””

A pause.

Then:

“I want my family back.””

I looked at Caleb’s bedroom door.

“You don’t have a family here.””

His voice became colder.

“You should ask your mother what happened after Ethan disappeared.””

My mother looked at me.

“What does that mean?””

Alexander continued:

“She didn’t just hide the truth about Ethan.””

May you like

My hand tightened around the phone.

“She helped him disappear.””
