Chapter 11: What Ethan Left Behind
The drive home felt endless.
Nobody spoke.
My mother stared out the window.
Daniel kept both hands on the steering wheel.
And I sat in the back seat holding the flash drive like it contained something alive.
Something dangerous.
When we got home, Caleb ran toward me.
“Mom!””
I forced a smile.
“Hey, buddy.””
He hugged me tightly.
And for a second, everything disappeared.
No secrets.
No fear.
No past.
Just my son.
“Grandma coming over today?””
I looked at my mother.
She smiled sadly.
“Of course.””
That almost broke me.
Because no matter what was happening, Caleb only knew one thing.
His grandmother loved him.
That night, after Caleb went to sleep, we opened the flash drive.
The files were old.
Years old.
Photos.
Messages.
Records.
Information Ethan had collected.
Daniel looked through everything carefully.
Then he stopped.
“Emily.””
I moved closer.
“What?””
He turned the laptop toward me.
There was a video file.
Created the day Caleb was born.
My heart raced.
“Open it.””
The screen showed Ethan.
Younger.
Tired.
But alive.
I forgot how much I missed seeing him.
His voice filled the room.
“If you’re watching this, then I couldn’t fix what happened.””
I covered my mouth.
Ethan looked directly into the camera.
“Emily, I’m sorry.””
Tears immediately filled my eyes.
“I wanted to tell you everything.””
He paused.
“But I knew if you knew, they would come after you.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Who is he talking about?””
The video continued.
“My family discovered I knew about the hospital records.””
I froze.
“He found out.””
My mother whispered.
Ethan continued:
“They changed the records because they needed access to information connected to another family.””
Another family.
I leaned closer.
“What does that mean?””
The video cut briefly.
Then Ethan appeared again.
“Caleb is safe because Emily’s name is on the records.””
I frowned.
“What?””
He continued.
“They can’t legally touch him.””
My confusion grew.
“Why?””
Daniel looked at me.
“Keep watching.””
Ethan took a breath.
“But if they prove the records were changed, they can challenge everything.””
The video ended.
The room was silent.
I looked at my mother.
“You knew.””
She nodded.
“I knew Ethan was afraid.””
“You knew about the records?””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“I knew something was wrong.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because you had finally built a life.””
I stood.
“A life built on not knowing.””
She cried.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I wanted to be angry.
I did.
But when I looked at my mother, I saw someone who had spent years carrying fear alone.
Then Daniel noticed something.
“Wait.””
He pointed at the screen.
The video file had another hidden folder.
Inside was one photo.
A picture of Ethan standing outside the hospital.
Holding Caleb.
But there was someone else in the background.
A man watching.
Thomas immediately stood up.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
His face changed completely.
Like he recognized the person.
“Who is that?””
He didn’t answer.
“Thomas.””
He whispered:
“That’s Alexander.””
My blood ran cold.
“He was there?””
Thomas nodded.
“He knew about Caleb from the beginning.””
I stared at the image.
A man watching my newborn son.
Watching Ethan.
Watching me.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
Again.
This time I answered immediately.
“Who are you?””
The voice was different.
Older.
Calmer.
A woman.
“Emily?””
I froze.
“Yes?””
The woman took a breath.
“I’m sorry I waited this long.””
“Who is this?””
A pause.

Then she said:
“My name is Rachel. I’m Caleb’s biological grandmother.””
