Chapter 14: The Choice

I ended the call.

Nobody moved.

The accusation hung in the air.

My mother helped Ethan disappear.

For a moment, I couldn’t look at her.

Not because I believed Alexander.

But because I was afraid.

Afraid there was another piece of the story I didn’t know.

“Mom.””

She closed her eyes.

“I knew this day would come.””

My heart sank.

“You did?””

She nodded.

“I knew eventually you would ask.””

“Then tell me.””

She sat down.

“When Ethan came to me that night, he wasn’t alone.””

I waited.

“He brought someone.””

“Who?””

She looked at Rachel.

Rachel looked away.

My mother whispered:

“His mother.””

Everyone became silent.

“Rachel?””

Rachel nodded.

“I was there.””

My mother continued.

“Ethan had discovered what Alexander was planning. He knew Alexander would use every legal option to take control.””

“But why disappear?””

My mother’s eyes filled.

“Because Ethan was going to expose everything.””

She took a shaky breath.

“And he knew they would come after Caleb.””

I looked at Rachel.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Rachel’s face broke.

“Because Ethan begged me not to.””

“Why?””

“Because he believed the safest thing for Caleb was for you to hate him.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He knew if you believed he abandoned you, you would never look for him.””

The pain of that sentence hit harder than anything.

Ethan chose to let me hate him.

Because he thought it would protect us.

My mother reached for my hand.

“I helped him leave.””

I swallowed.

“You lied to me.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked away.

For years, I thought my mother had hidden things because she didn’t trust me.

But maybe she had hidden them because she loved me.

Still, the pain was real.

“I needed the truth.””

“I know.””

“And Caleb needed the truth too.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

That evening, we sat down with Caleb.

Not everything.

Not yet.

He was seven.

He didn’t need the entire burden of adults’ mistakes.

But he deserved honesty.

I held his hand.

“Caleb, there are people from the past who knew your dad.””

His eyes widened.

“My real dad?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

“Did he leave because he didn’t love me?””

My heart broke.

“No.””

I pulled him close.

“He loved you more than you know.””

Caleb looked at the floor.

“Then why wasn’t he here?””

I swallowed my tears.

“Because sometimes people have to make hard choices to protect the people they love.””

He was quiet.

Then asked:

“Was he a good person?””

I smiled through tears.

“Yes.””

The next morning, Alexander came.

Not with threats.

Not with anger.

Just a man in an expensive suit standing at my front door.

He looked older than I expected.

Tired.

But confident.

“Emily.””

I stepped outside.

“You’re not coming inside.””

He nodded.

“I understand.””

“You watched my family.””

“I watched because I was trying to understand what Ethan left behind.””

“My son isn’t something he left behind.””

For the first time, his expression changed.

“You sound like him.””

“I’ll take that as a compliment.””

He looked past me.

“I want to see Caleb.””

“No.””

“Emily.””

“No.””

He sighed.

“You don’t understand.””

“I understand enough.””

He reached into his coat.

I immediately stepped back.

But he only pulled out an old photograph.

He handed it to me.

It was Ethan.

Holding Caleb as a baby.

On the back was a message.

Not from Ethan.

From Alexander.

I read it.

And my hands started shaking.

Because underneath all the anger and secrets was something I never expected.

A confession.

May you like

Alexander hadn’t been trying to destroy Ethan.

He had been trying to find him.
