Chapter 6: The Truth My Mother Hid

I barely remembered driving home.

My mind was stuck on one sentence.

The people who made Ethan disappear.

For years, I believed Ethan abandoned me.

I believed he walked away because he was selfish.

Because he didn’t care.

But what if I was wrong?

What if there was something I never knew?

When I arrived home, Daniel was waiting.

One look at my face told him everything.

“What happened?””

I placed the letter on the table.

He read it silently.

Then looked up.

“Emily.””

“I know.””

“This changes everything.””

I nodded.

That night, we didn’t sleep.

We sat in the living room while Caleb watched cartoons upstairs, completely unaware that the adults around him were trying to protect him from a past he didn’t even know existed.

The next morning, I went back to my mother’s house.

She opened the door and immediately knew.

“You found something.””

I stared at her.

“You knew.””

Her face fell.

“Emily…”

“You knew Ethan didn’t just leave.””

She closed her eyes.

For a moment, she looked older than sixty-six.

“I knew something was wrong.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because you were finally happy.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Happy?””

“Yes.””

“With a lie?””

“No.””

She stepped closer.

“With peace.””

I looked away.

She continued.

“When Ethan disappeared, I saw what it did to you. You stopped eating. You stopped sleeping. You blamed yourself.””

“I was his mother.””

“You were a nineteen-year-old girl whose boyfriend vanished.””

I felt tears burning my eyes.

“Then why protect the secret?””

She sat down.

“Because Ethan left something with me.””

“What?””

She opened a drawer.

Inside was a small metal box.

My heart raced.

“What is that?””

“He gave it to me the night before he disappeared.””

I stared at the box.

“What’s inside?””

“I never opened it.””

I looked at her.

“You never opened it?””

“He told me only you could.””

My hands trembled as she placed the box in front of me.

I slowly opened it.

Inside was a key.

And a photograph.

Not of Ethan.

Of a little boy.

Caleb.

But this picture was different.

Caleb was only a few months old.

And beside him was Ethan.

Holding him.

Smiling.

A tear slipped down my face.

“He knew him.””

My mother nodded.

“He did.””

“Then why didn’t he stay?””

She looked at the key.

“Because he found out something.””

“What?””

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she reached into her purse.

She pulled out another envelope.

My name was written on it.

Not by my mother.

By Ethan.

I stared at it.

My hands refused to open it.

“What does it say?””

My mother looked terrified.

“I don’t know.””

“But you know what’s inside.””

She nodded slowly.

“Because I saw the first line.””

“What did it say?””

My mother looked at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“Emily, if you’re reading this, it means they found Caleb.””
