Chapter 9: The Truth My Father Took to His Grave

Nobody moved.

Not even Caldwell.

The accusation was too heavy.

Too impossible.

My father died twelve years ago.

A car accident.

That was the official story.

The story I had been forced to accept when I was nineteen and suddenly alone in the world.

But Alexander Reed was standing in front of me.

Alive.

And he had just destroyed the only version of my father’s death I had ever known.

I stared at him.

“Where have you been?””

His eyes softened.

“I tried to come back sooner.””

“Then why didn’t you?””

His expression changed.

“Because every person who tried to expose the truth disappeared.””

The room became colder.

Victoria stepped forward.

“This is absurd.””

Alexander looked at her.

“No, Victoria.””

His voice was quiet.

“It’s overdue.””

She froze.

Caldwell looked at Alexander.

“You know my mother?””

Alexander didn’t answer immediately.

“Yes.””

“How?””

Alexander looked at him.

“Because I knew your father too.””

Caldwell’s face tightened.

“You worked with him.””

“I did.””

“Then why did you betray him?””

Alexander’s expression turned painful.

“I didn’t.””

The answer came instantly.

“I was the one who tried to stop him.””

I looked between them.

“Stop who?””

Alexander looked at me.

“Your father’s killer.””

The words felt unreal.

I stepped closer.

“Tell me.””

Alexander glanced around the ballroom.

“At the right time.””

I almost lost my patience.

“No.””

Everyone looked at me.

“No more secrets.””

My voice shook.

“No more people deciding what I can handle.””

I held the letter in my hand.

“My father died. My company was stolen. My marriage was destroyed because people kept deciding I didn’t deserve the truth.””

Silence.

Then Alexander nodded.

“You’re right.””

He walked closer.

“Your father would have been proud of you.””

The words almost broke me.

Because that was what I wanted.

Not revenge.

Not power.

Just one person telling me I had done the right thing.

Alexander removed a small device from his coat.

“A recording.””

Thaddius immediately recognized it.

“Where did you get that?””

“Your friend left it with me.””

I looked at him.

“My father?””

Alexander nodded.

“He knew he was in danger.””

The room held its breath.

“He recorded everything.””

Victoria whispered.

“No.””

Alexander pressed a button.

A voice filled the ballroom.

My father’s voice.

Older.

Familiar.

The sound of it shattered something inside me.

“Evelyn, if you are hearing this, then I failed to protect you.””

My eyes burned.

I covered my mouth.

The recording continued.

“But I need you to know something. I did not lose my company. I gave it away temporarily because I was trying to protect the person I loved most.””

I froze.

The person he loved most.

Me.

“My father trusted the wrong people.””

Alexander looked at Victoria.

The recording continued.

“Richard was not acting alone.””

The ballroom went silent.

“Someone inside my own family helped him.””

Caldwell looked at his mother.

Victoria’s face turned pale.

My father’s voice continued.

“And the person who betrayed me was not the person everyone suspected.””

Alexander stopped the recording.

Everyone stared.

“Why did you stop?””

Because I knew.

The truth was coming.

The final name.

The one my father had protected.

Alexander looked at me.

“Because the next part changes everything.””

I whispered:

“Who was it?””

Alexander looked toward Caldwell.

Then Victoria.

Then finally me.

“Evelyn…”

A pause.

“Your father didn’t leave the company to you because he trusted you.””

My heart stopped.

“He left it to you because he knew someone would try to take it.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Alexander opened the final folder.

Inside was a document.

A birth record.

A legal agreement.

And a name.

My name.

But not the name I had used my entire life.

Alexander placed the document in front of me.

“Your father discovered the Vance family was hiding something even older than the company.””

I looked down.

And the first line made my blood run cold.

Because it revealed a truth about my own identity.

A truth Caldwell had never known.

A truth Victoria had spent twelve years hiding.

May you like

And a truth that meant I was never just the owner of Vance Global.

I was something far more dangerous to them.
