Chapter 14: The Vault Beneath Vance Global
The old Vance Global building had been abandoned for almost a decade.
A symbol of the company’s past.
A place everyone forgot.
Except someone hadn’t.
By midnight, we were standing in the underground foundation beneath the original headquarters.
Me.
Thaddius.
Alexander.
My mother.
Even Caldwell.
I was surprised he came.
But when I asked why, he only said:
“I need to know what my family destroyed.””
For once, I believed him.
The elevator descended slowly.
Each second felt heavier.
My mother stood beside me.
Neither of us spoke.
There were too many words.
Too many years.
Finally, she whispered:
“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.””
I looked at the elevator doors.
“I don’t know if I can forgive you.””
She nodded.
“I understand.””
“But I want the truth.””
She looked at me.
“That’s all I ever wanted too.””
The doors opened.
The underground chamber was dark.
Dust covered everything.
Except one thing.
A fresh set of footprints.
Someone had been there recently.
Alexander noticed immediately.
“They opened it.””
Thaddius looked around.
“Whoever came here knew exactly where to go.””
We followed the footprints.
At the end of the hallway was a steel door.
My hand tightened around the key.
I inserted it.
Nothing happened.
I tried again.
Still nothing.
Then my mother stepped forward.
“Wait.””
She touched the side panel.
A hidden scanner appeared.
I stared.
“What is that?””
“Your father added another security measure.””
“What kind?””
She looked at me.
“Family recognition.””
I frowned.
“How?””
She placed my hand on the scanner.
The machine activated.
A soft light appeared.
Then the door unlocked.
Everyone went silent.
Inside was a small room.
Not filled with money.
Not filled with secrets.
But filled with memories.
Photographs.
Letters.
Old journals.
My father’s life.
My hands shook as I picked up the first journal.
The cover had my name.
*For Evelyn.*
I opened it.
The first page contained a message.
If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you from the truth.
I closed my eyes.
Not again.
Not another goodbye.
I kept reading.
But I need you to understand something. The greatest mistake I made was believing powerful people could be reasoned with.
My mother covered her mouth.
The next pages revealed everything.
Richard Vance had not created the betrayal alone.
He had been manipulated.
Someone had been moving behind him.
Someone who wanted control of both families.
I turned the page.
And saw a name.
My heart stopped.
Because it was not Victoria.
It was not Richard.
It was not anyone in the Vance family.
It was someone outside.
Someone who had benefited from the company’s rise.
Someone who had remained untouchable.
Alexander leaned over.
“What is it?””
I looked up.
“The original investor.””
Thaddius frowned.
“Impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because he disappeared years ago.””
I stared at the name.
“Apparently, everyone connected to the truth has a habit of disappearing.””
Caldwell looked at the journal.
“Who is he?””
I showed him.
His face changed.
Because he knew the name.
“Caldwell?””
He stepped back.
“My father warned me about him.””
“Who?””
Caldwell whispered:
“Jonathan Vale.””
The room went silent.
My mother looked terrified.
“You can’t be serious.””
Alexander’s expression darkened.
“He was supposed to be dead.””
I looked at everyone.
Another dead person.
Another lie.
Another ghost returning.
Then the lights turned on.
Everyone froze.
A voice came from the doorway.
“You people really do believe every story you’re told.””
We turned.
A man stood there.
Older.
Confident.
Holding the missing journal pages.
Jonathan Vale.
Alive.
May you like
He smiled.
“And that is why you were so easy to control.””
