Chapter 12: The Final Witness

The name on the screen remained frozen.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

Because the person my father had warned me about was someone I trusted.

Someone who had protected me.

Someone who had stood beside me tonight.

I turned slowly.

“Thaddius?””

The chairman’s face changed.

Not with anger.

With pain.

“Evelyn…”

My stomach tightened.

“No.””

The word escaped before I could stop it.

“You?””

Caldwell stared at him.

“This is a joke.””

Alexander looked equally shocked.

“I didn’t know.””

Thaddius closed his eyes.

“I knew this day would come.””

The room exploded.

Board members shouted questions.

Security stepped forward.

I couldn’t hear any of it.

I only heard my father’s voice repeating in my head.

*Never trust.*

The man who had helped guide Vance Global.

The man who had protected the company.

The man who called me “ma’am” before anyone else remembered my name.

I looked at him.

“Tell me it’s not true.””

Thaddius looked at me.

And that was the worst part.

He didn’t immediately deny it.

“I can explain.””

My heart sank.

“Explain what?””

“That I was not the person who betrayed your father.””

“Then why did he name you?””

Thaddius looked at the screen.

“Because he knew I would be blamed.””

Alexander stepped forward.

“Thaddius, what did you do?””

The chairman looked at him.

“I saved her.””

Everyone went silent.

“Saved who?””

Thaddius looked at me.

“Evelyn.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

He took a slow breath.

“Your father did not die because someone wanted his company.””

The room became silent.

“He died because someone wanted you.””

A chill moved through me.

“What?””

Thaddius continued.

“Your father discovered the truth about your mother’s family. He discovered the ownership rights. He discovered people were willing to kill for them.””

Caldwell looked horrified.

“You’re saying my father…”

Thaddius looked at him.

“Your father was involved.””

Victoria closed her eyes.

The truth was becoming impossible to escape.

“But Richard was not the person who ordered the attack.””

I stepped closer.

“Then who was?””

Thaddius looked at the screen.

“Your father knew.””

He pointed toward the frozen video.

“He recorded this because he knew the person behind everything would eventually try to control Vance Global.””

My voice dropped.

“Who?””

Thaddius looked at me.

“Someone who believed they had the right to inherit everything.””

The lights flickered again.

The video resumed.

My father’s face returned.

“If Thaddius is showing you this, then understand one thing.””

Everyone stared.

“He did not betray me.””

I froze.

The ballroom erupted.

The screen continued.

“He protected the truth because I asked him to.””

I turned toward Thaddius.

He looked down.

The video continued.

“The person who betrayed me was someone I loved.””

A pause.

Someone gasped.

My father’s voice became softer.

“Someone who knew exactly how to make me trust them.””

The screen went black.

Nobody moved.

Then the ballroom doors opened.

A woman stepped inside.

Older.

Elegant.

Familiar.

I had seen her before.

In photographs.

In old family albums.

But I thought she was gone.

Everyone stepped back.

Victoria whispered:

“No.””

Caldwell stared.

“Who is that?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because I knew.

I knew the face.

I knew the name.

The woman walked forward slowly.

Her eyes locked onto mine.

Then she smiled.

“Hello, Evelyn.””

My entire body froze.

Because the woman standing in front of me was supposed to have died twelve years ago.

May you like

My mother.

Was alive.
