Chapter 2: The Thirty-Minute Countdown

The ballroom doors closed behind me.

The music started again.

The laughter returned.

Inside, Caldwell Vance probably believed he had won.

But outside the ballroom, standing alone in a quiet marble hallway, I finally allowed myself to breathe.

My reflection stared back at me from the glass wall.

My dress was ruined.

My hair was slightly messy.

My hands were shaking.

Anyone passing by would have seen a woman who had just been publicly abandoned.

They would have been wrong.

I looked down at my phone.

The screen showed one message.

*THADDIUS: Resolution activated. Waiting for chairman approval.*

I smiled faintly.

“Good.””

Seven years.

Seven years of watching Caldwell take credit for things he never built.

Seven years of staying silent while his family erased my name from every room I entered.

Seven years of letting everyone believe I was simply Mrs. Caldwell Vance.

They never asked who had helped create the foundation of Vance Global.

They never asked whose research opened the international market.

They never asked whose inheritance funded the first expansion.

Because Caldwell wanted the world to believe he was self-made.

And I let him.

Until tonight.

A voice came from behind me.

“Evelyn?””

I turned.

It was Marcus Hale, one of Vance Global’s senior investors.

His expression was uncomfortable.

“I saw what happened.””

I gave a small nod.

“I’m sure everyone did.””

He lowered his voice.

“Are you really trying to remove Caldwell?””

I looked at him.

“Did he tell you I couldn’t?””

Marcus looked away.

That was answer enough.

“They all think that,” I said.

“Evelyn, Caldwell owns the company.””

“No.””

My voice was calm.

“He manages the company.””

Marcus studied me.

“There’s a difference?””

“Yes.””

I checked the time.

Twenty-three minutes remaining.

Before he could respond, my phone rang.

Thaddius.

I answered immediately.

“Tell me.””

His deep voice came through the speaker.

“Ma’am, the emergency board members have received the documentation.””

Marcus froze.

Ma’am.

Not Evelyn.

Not Mrs. Vance.

Ma’am.

Because Thaddius knew the truth.

“Any resistance?”” I asked.

“A lot.””

I almost laughed.

“Of course.””

“Caldwell is contacting department heads. He’s trying to lock down internal systems.””

“Can he?””

“No.””

“Good.””

I ended the call.

Marcus looked at me differently now.

“What exactly did you sign?””

I looked through the glass doors toward the ballroom.

“I signed the agreement that saved Vance Global from bankruptcy eight years ago.””

His face changed.

“That was you?””

I didn’t answer.

Because the answer was written in documents Caldwell’s family thought had disappeared.

My father had built a small technology company before his death.

Caldwell’s father had wanted it.

He offered money.

Then threats.

Then promises.

But my father left everything to me.

Including the controlling shares that later became the backbone of Vance Global.

When I married Caldwell, I believed we were partners.

I transferred management rights.

Not ownership.

A mistake I had spent years regretting.

A mistake I was now correcting.

The ballroom doors opened suddenly.

A young assistant rushed out.

“Mrs. Vance?””

I turned.

Her face was pale.

“Caldwell wants you back inside.””

I almost smiled.

“Why?””

She swallowed.

“He says there has been a misunderstanding.””

A misunderstanding.

That was the word powerful people used when consequences arrived.

I walked back toward the doors.

Inside, everyone had stopped celebrating.

Caldwell stood near the stage, his confidence slightly damaged.

Sloan was beside him.

Victoria looked irritated.

When I entered, Caldwell immediately approached.

“Evelyn.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

His smile was forced.

“Let’s not make this worse.””

I almost laughed.

“You removed me from your company event in front of three hundred people.””

“I was angry.””

“You accused me of attacking Sloan.””

“She misunderstood the situation.””

I looked at Sloan.

She looked away.

Interesting.

Caldwell lowered his voice.

“We can fix this privately.””

“No.””

His expression hardened.

“What did you say?””

“I said no.””

The room became silent again.

Caldwell looked around.

“You really think you have control here?””

I checked my phone.

Ten minutes remaining.

Then I said the one thing that made his smile disappear.

“You’re about to find out.””

At that exact moment, my phone buzzed.

One new message.

I opened it.

And my heart stopped.

Because it wasn’t from Thaddius.

May you like

It was from the chairman.

*I’m entering the ballroom now.*
