Chapter 8: The Man Who Never Died

I couldn’t move.

The photograph shook between my fingers.

“No.””

The word left my mouth before I could stop it.

Caldwell looked at me.

“Who is it?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because saying the name would make it real.

Thaddius watched my face carefully.

“You recognize him.””

I looked up.

Slowly.

“Yes.””

The room waited.

I swallowed.

“Alexander Reed.””

A wave of whispers moved through the ballroom.

Victoria grabbed the table beside her.

“That’s impossible.””

I looked at her.

“You said he was dead.””

Her silence confirmed everything.

Caldwell looked between us.

“My whole life, I was told he betrayed my family.””

I stared at him.

“And my whole life, I was told he died.””

Neither of us knew the truth.

Because someone had created a story.

And everyone had accepted it.

Thaddius took the photograph.

“The security footage shows him entering the archive room forty minutes ago.””

“Did he take anything?””

“No.””

“Then why break in?””

The officer answered.

“He left something.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?””

A small envelope was placed on the table.

My name was written across the front.

Not Mrs. Vance.

Not Evelyn Vance.

Just:

*Evelyn.*

My father used to call me that.

Only him.

I opened it carefully.

Inside was a handwritten note.

*“I’m sorry it took me twelve years to come back.””*

My heart tightened.

The next line made me stop.

*“But I could not return until I knew who was truly responsible.””*

I read it again.

Then looked at Thaddius.

“He’s alive.””

“Yes.””

“Where is he?””

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

Caldwell stepped closer.

“Evelyn.””

I looked at him.

For once, his voice wasn’t arrogant.

It was uncertain.

“What else did my father hide?””

I almost told him not to ask.

Because some truths destroy the people who discover them.

But then I remembered the ballroom.

The ring.

The humiliation.

The years of silence.

He deserved the truth.

Everyone did.

“I don’t know.””

And that was the first honest answer I had given him all night.

Thaddius gathered the documents.

“We need to leave.””

Victoria immediately looked alarmed.

“No.””

Everyone turned.

She recovered quickly.

“I mean… leaving now would create unnecessary attention.””

I studied her.

She wasn’t worried about attention.

She was worried about what would happen if we left.

“What are you afraid we’ll find?””

Her face hardened.

“I’m not afraid of anything.””

A lie.

A terrible one.

Thaddius looked at the security officers.

“Secure the documents.””

Caldwell suddenly moved toward his mother.

“Tell me the truth.””

Victoria looked at him.

“You don’t want the truth.””

“Yes, I do.””

“No.””

Her voice broke slightly.

“You want a version that allows you to still be innocent.””

That sentence hurt him.

Because maybe she was right.

Caldwell had spent years believing he was the victim.

The rightful heir.

The man everyone wronged.

But tonight, the foundation beneath him was collapsing.

Thaddius turned to me.

“Ma’am, there is one more thing you should know.””

“What?””

“Alexander Reed didn’t just leave a letter.””

He opened another file.

“He left instructions.””

I frowned.

“For what?””

The chairman looked at the document.

“To reveal the complete ownership history of Vance Global.””

My stomach tightened.

“And?””

“And he specifically requested that the final disclosure happen in front of the entire board.””

I looked around the ballroom.

The entire board.

Many of them were still standing there.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

Unknown number.

Only four words.

*“Look behind you.””*

My body went still.

Slowly, I turned.

At the far end of the ballroom, near the entrance, stood a man.

Older.

Thinner.

But alive.

The world stopped.

Because I knew that face.

I had seen it in photographs.

I had seen it in my father’s old journals.

And I had seen it in my childhood memories.

Alexander Reed.

The man everyone said was dead.

He looked directly at me.

Then said the words I never expected to hear.

“Evelyn, your father didn’t die because of an accident.””

The room froze.

May you like

Alexander took one step forward.

“He was murdered.””
