Chapter 13: The Mother I Was Told to Mourn
For twelve years, I carried a memory of my mother.
A photograph beside my bed.
A voice I could barely remember.
A perfume bottle she left behind that I refused to throw away.
I had spent years mourning a woman I believed I lost.
And now she was standing in front of me.
Alive.
Breathing.
Looking at me like she had been waiting for this moment.
I couldn’t speak.
I couldn’t move.
My entire body felt frozen between anger and disbelief.
“Mom?””
The word barely escaped.
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
One word.
One impossible word.
And suddenly I was nineteen again.
Sitting in a hospital hallway.
Waiting for someone to tell me my family would be okay.
Waiting for my mother to walk through the door.
She never did.
Because everyone told me she was gone.
I looked at Thaddius.
Then Alexander.
Then Victoria.
“Everyone knew.””
Nobody answered.
That was the answer.
My mother took another step forward.
“Evelyn…”
I stepped back.
“Don’t.””
Her expression broke.
“I know you’re angry.””
“You think?””
My voice cracked.
“You let me believe you were dead.””
Tears moved down her face.
“I had no choice.””
“No choice?””
I laughed bitterly.
“I spent twelve years wondering if I was the reason you died.””
The room became silent.
“I thought maybe I wasn’t enough.””
Her face collapsed.
“Evelyn, no.””
“Yes.””
My voice grew stronger.
“That is what happens when everyone you love disappears and nobody tells you why.””
She looked down.
And for the first time, I saw something unexpected.
Shame.
Not guilt.
Shame.
“I wanted to come back.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
She looked at Thaddius.
Then Alexander.
“Because the people who wanted the company wanted you too.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t understand.””
My mother took a breath.
“Your father discovered the Vance family was not just fighting for control of a company.””
She looked around the ballroom.
“They were fighting for control of a legacy.””
Alexander nodded.
“Your mother’s family created the original technology that became the foundation of Vance Global.””
My mother continued.
“Your father protected it.””
“From who?””
Her eyes moved toward Victoria.
Victoria looked away.
That told me enough.
But my mother wasn’t finished.
“Richard Vance wanted ownership.””
She paused.
“But someone else wanted more.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
My mother looked at me.
“The person who convinced Richard to betray your father.””
The room waited.
“Who?””
She whispered:
“Me.””
The silence was immediate.
I stared at her.
“What?””
My mother closed her eyes.
“I was the one who helped Richard access the documents.””
Everyone reacted.
Caldwell looked stunned.
Victoria looked confused.
Alexander looked hurt.
My voice became quiet.
“You?””
She nodded.
“But not for the reason you think.””
I almost laughed.
“Everyone says that.””
She stepped closer.
“Your father found out I was being threatened.””
My anger paused.
“What?””
“Richard had information about my family. He used it against me.””
My mother looked at the floor.
“He forced me to cooperate.””
“And you did.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than a lie.
“I helped him.””
She looked at me.
“And that is something I will regret until I die.””
Nobody spoke.
Caldwell looked at his mother.
“Did you know?””
Victoria remained silent.
My mother answered.
“Yes.””
Everyone turned.
“She knew everything.””
Victoria’s face hardened.
“You don’t get to pretend you are innocent.””
My mother looked at her.
“I never said I was.””
That surprised me.
Because for the first time tonight, someone admitted they were wrong without trying to escape.
“I betrayed your father’s trust,” my mother said.
“But I also discovered what Richard planned.””
She looked at me.
“He wasn’t going to take the company.””
A chill moved through me.
“Then what was he going to do?””
My mother’s voice lowered.
“He was going to erase every person connected to the ownership.””
My blood ran cold.
“Me.””
She nodded.
“You were the last heir.””
The room became silent.
My entire life suddenly made sense.
The secrecy.
The protection.
The lies.
Everyone had been fighting over something I never even knew I had.
My mother reached into her bag.
“I brought this because I knew the truth had to come from me.””
She handed me a small box.
Inside was a key.
Old.
Metal.
Worn.
“What is this?””
“Your father’s final storage vault.””
I looked at her.
“Where?””
She swallowed.
“Under the first Vance Global building.””
Thaddius stepped forward.
“That vault was never found.””
My mother nodded.
“Because it wasn’t meant to be found.””
She looked at me.
“It was meant to be opened by you.””
I held the key tightly.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
Only one sentence.
*“The vault is already open.””*
I looked up.
May you like
Because someone had beaten us there.
And they knew exactly what they were searching for.
