Chapter 7: The Heir My Grandfather Never Named
"THE REAL HEIR IS NOT CLAIRE.""
I stared at the photograph on my phone as Nathan drove through Manhattan traffic.
The document was stained with blood.
My grandfather's signature appeared at the bottom, beneath five handwritten words that seemed to erase everything I'd ever believed about my family.
"Call the hospital," I said.
Nathan pressed his hands tighter against the steering wheel.
"I've already contacted security. They're checking every entrance.""
"Vanessa said Everett was there.""
"Then we need to assume he knows we're coming.""
I looked at the photograph again.
The document appeared to be a handwritten amendment to my grandfather's estate plan.
But something bothered me.
The signature was unmistakable. I'd seen it thousands of times on birthday cards, investment agreements, and the letters he used to leave beside my breakfast plate.
However, the paper itself looked old.
Much older than the date on the hospital photograph.
"Stop the car.""
Nathan glanced at me.
"What?""
"Look at the document.""
He pulled over near the hospital entrance.
I enlarged the photograph.
There was a small embossed seal in the bottom corner.
A silver eagle surrounded by the words Bennett Family Foundation.
I recognized it.
The foundation had stopped using that seal twenty years ago.
"That's an original document," I whispered.
Nathan examined the image.
"Possibly.""
"Why would Vanessa have it?""
"Perhaps she found it among Eleanor's belongings.""
I looked at him.
"Then why is there blood on it?""
Nathan didn't answer.
We rushed through the hospital entrance.
A nurse directed us toward the private recovery wing.
Vanessa was sitting on a bed, wearing a pale blue hospital gown. A small bandage covered her forehead.
Her makeup had run down her cheeks.
When she saw me, she began crying.
"Claire.""
I approached slowly.
"Are you hurt?""
"Just a cut. Everett grabbed my bag and pushed me against the door.""
Nathan immediately spoke to the attending nurse.
"Has anyone else visited this patient?""
"One man came earlier," she replied.
"He claimed to be her fiancé.""
"Did you let him in?""
"No. She specifically requested that nobody be allowed into her room.""
Vanessa looked down.
"He told me I had to give him the document.""
"What document?""
She opened the bedside drawer.
Inside was a clear plastic medical envelope.
She removed a folded piece of paper.
"I found it in my mother's storage unit. She died six months ago.""
I felt my chest tighten.
"Eleanor is dead?""
Vanessa nodded.
"She had cancer. Before she died, she told me that if anything happened to her, I should find you.""
"Why didn't you contact me?""
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
"Because I hated you.""
The honesty surprised me.
She wiped her face.
"My whole life, I was told you had everything. The family name. The money.
The mansion. The company. I was told my father chose you and abandoned me.""
I sat beside her.
"Your father?""
She looked at me.
"Richard Bennett.""
My grandfather.
The room became very quiet.
"Are you saying my grandfather was your father?""
Vanessa nodded.
"He visited me twice when I was little. My mother kept photographs. She told me he wanted to acknowledge me, but someone threatened to expose his relationship with her and destroy the family.""
"Who?""
"Thomas.""
I looked at Nathan.
He was studying the document.
Vanessa continued.
"Thomas paid my school fees. He told my mother it was because he felt responsible. But he also controlled everything. He decided where I lived, what I studied, and who I could contact.""
"And Everett?""
"Thomas introduced us four years ago.""
I closed my eyes.
Everything was connected.
The shell company.
The suspicious transfers.
The staged pregnancy.
The affair.
"Why did you agree to help them?"" I asked.
Vanessa's eyes filled again.
"Because they told me I would finally receive what my father owed me.""
She looked at the document.
"They said the original will named me as the sole heir.""
Nathan stopped reading.
"What?""
Vanessa nodded.
"Thomas showed me a copy. He said your grandfather had changed his mind before he died.""
I reached for the paper.
"May I?""
She handed it to me.
The document contained a declaration signed by Richard Bennett.
It stated that his biological daughter, whose identity had been withheld for family reasons, would receive the majority of his private estate.
But there was a handwritten note beneath the signature.
This provision shall only become effective upon proof that the named beneficiary has been deliberately excluded from the family estate.
Nathan examined the final paragraph.
"There's a problem.""
"What?""
"The document doesn't name Vanessa.""
I looked again.
He was right.
The beneficiary's name had been removed from the photographed section.
"Can you identify the original?""
Nathan examined the embossed seal.
"Not from this copy. We need the complete document.""
Vanessa suddenly grabbed my hand.
"Claire, there's something I haven't told you.""
"What?""
"Everett said the document was worthless unless he could obtain your signature on another agreement.""
"What agreement?""
She swallowed.
"The divorce settlement.""
I stared at her.
"Why would my signature matter?""
Nathan answered before she could.
"Because the trust's succession clause contains a provision regarding marital transfers. If you voluntarily surrendered your beneficial interest, certain family assets could be redirected under the original agreement.""
I felt sick.
Everett hadn't simply wanted a divorce.
He wanted me to sign away the very thing that protected me.
Vanessa reached into her pillowcase and removed a small flash drive.
"I copied something from Everett's laptop before he came to my apartment.""
Nathan took it carefully.
"What is it?""
"An audio recording.""
She looked directly at me.
"It was a conversation between Everett and Thomas. They thought I wasn't listening.""
Nathan inserted the drive into his secure tablet.
A recording began.
Thomas's voice filled the hospital room.
"Once Claire signs, the trust loses its protection.""
Everett responded.
"And Vanessa?""
"She gets enough to disappear. She was never supposed to inherit anything.""
Then Thomas said something that made my blood run cold.
"After all, she isn't Richard's only secret child.""
The recording ended.
I stared at the screen.
Another secret child?
Nathan slowly closed the tablet.
"Claire, I think we need to reconsider everything we know about your grandfather's estate.""
Before I could answer, the hospital nurse rushed into the room.
"Mrs. Reed, I'm sorry. There's someone downstairs demanding to see you.""
Vanessa began shaking.
"Who?""
The nurse looked at me.
"He says he's your uncle.""
May you like
Thomas Bennett had arrived.
And he wasn't alone.
