Chapter 11: The Secret Inside the Safe
At 7:42 p.m., we arrived at the old Hale residence.
The mansion stood on a quiet road outside Greenwich, Connecticut.
It had belonged to Everett's father before his death.
Everett had inherited the property, although the title was now under review as part of the Hale Global asset recovery.
Nathan parked two streets away.
"Security is in position," he said.
"We have officers monitoring both entrances.""
I held Daniel's brass key.
"Do you think Everett knows what is inside?""
"He's desperate enough to find out.""
We approached the side entrance.
The door was unlocked.
That frightened me more than if it had been forced.
Inside, the house smelled of old wood and furniture polish.
A chandelier illuminated the staircase.
Everett stood in the drawing room.
He wore a dark sweater and held a glass of whiskey.
"You came.""
I stopped several feet away.
"Where is the safe?""
He smiled faintly.
"Always business with you, Claire.""
"Where is it?""
He placed his glass on the table.
"Before we discuss that, I want to apologize.""
I stared at him.
"For what?""
"For the gala.""
I almost laughed.
"You're going to have to be more specific.""
He looked down.
"I shouldn't have humiliated you.""
"You shouldn't have stolen from the company. You shouldn't have used my family's money to fund your mistress's lifestyle. You shouldn't have thrown our wedding ring at my feet.""
He rubbed his jaw.
"I was under pressure.""
"So was I. I didn't steal millions of dollars.""
His expression hardened.
"Thomas told me the trust would eventually transfer control to me.""
"Why would you believe that?""
"Because he showed me the amendment.""
"The amendment that was never valid?""
Everett said nothing.
I stepped closer.
"Did you marry me because you loved me?""
He looked away.
"At first, yes.""
"At first?""
He exhaled.
"William knew about your grandfather's estate. He believed that if we married, I would eventually gain access to the family assets.""
My chest tightened.
"And you agreed?""
"I was young.""
"You were thirty-two.""
He looked irritated.
"Claire, you have no idea what it was like growing up with William. Everything was about money, power, and reputation. He told me I had to become someone important.""
"So you decided to use me.""
"I fell in love with you.""
"Then why did you help him?""
Everett looked at me.
"Because he told me what happened to Rebecca.""
The room became silent.
"What did he tell you?""
"That she had been working against him. That she was planning to expose him. He said the accident was unavoidable.""
I stared.
"You knew he killed my mother?""
Everett lowered his eyes.
"I didn't know the whole truth.""
"How long?""
He didn't answer.
"How long, Everett?""
"Since before our wedding.""
My hand tightened around the key.
Ten years.
Ten years of breakfasts, anniversaries, Christmas mornings, and whispered promises.
He had known.
He had known that the man who helped arrange our marriage was connected to my mother's death.
And he had said nothing.
"You're a coward," I whispered.
He stepped toward me.
"Claire, I can help you. I know where Thomas keeps the original documents.""
"Then tell me.""
He pointed toward the library.
"The safe is behind the portrait of William.""
We entered the room.
A large oil painting hung above the fireplace.
Everett removed it, revealing a steel safe built into the wall.
I inserted Daniel's key.
It turned.
Inside were several folders, a black leather journal, and a sealed envelope.
Nathan examined the contents.
"Don't touch anything else until I photograph it.""
But I had already noticed a document with my name.
*CLAIRE BENNETT — ORIGINAL BIRTH REGISTRATION.*
I opened it.
My biological mother was listed as Rebecca Bennett.
My biological father was listed as Daniel Cross.
The adoption papers had been signed when I was two.
But there was another document beneath them.
A genetic inheritance certificate.
It stated that my grandfather had commissioned a private DNA examination to establish the biological relationships among his descendants.
The result was attached.
I read the final line twice.
*CLAIRE BENNETT: CONFIRMED BIOLOGICAL DESCENDANT OF RICHARD BENNETT THROUGH REBECCA BENNETT.*
I looked at Nathan.
"Why would this matter?""
He picked up the certificate.
"Because the second will may contain inheritance conditions based on biological descent.""
Everett suddenly spoke.
"That's not the important document.""
We turned.
He pointed toward the sealed envelope.
"That's what William was looking for.""
Nathan carefully opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter from my grandfather.
To the person who finally finds this,
I have spent twenty years trying to protect my family from the consequences of my own decisions.
Rebecca was right about Thomas. William was involved. And I failed to stop them.
But there is something neither man knows.
The Bennett family fortune was never meant to belong to one person. It was created to protect a charitable foundation established by my wife, Margaret.
The controlling assets were placed into a permanent charitable trust. The person who inherits the authority to manage it cannot sell it, transfer it, or use it for personal enrichment.
I looked at Nathan.
He nodded slowly.
"That explains the structure.""
The letter continued.
I appointed Claire as the future guardian because she possesses something Thomas and William never understood.
She knows the difference between owning something and being responsible for it.
At the bottom was my grandfather's signature.
And beneath it, another paragraph.
If Claire is ever forced to surrender her position, the trust's emergency succession authority shall pass to the person named in the sealed beneficiary schedule.
Nathan examined the final page.
"Where is the schedule?""
I looked inside the envelope.
There was nothing else.
Everett gave a bitter laugh.
"Thomas has it.""
I turned toward him.
"How do you know?""
"Because he showed it to me.""
Nathan stepped forward.
"Who is named?""
Everett hesitated.
Then he looked at me.
"Vanessa.""
I felt the room tilt.
"That's impossible.""
"Your grandfather wanted her protected. Thomas told me she was the real successor.""
Nathan shook his head.
"That's not necessarily what the document says.""
Everett suddenly grabbed the leather journal.
"Give me that!""
He ran toward the door.
Nathan shouted.
"Stop!""
The security officers entered from the hallway.
Everett dropped the journal.
One officer restrained him while the other secured the documents.
Everett looked at me.
"Claire, you have to understand. I was trying to protect myself.""
I picked up the journal.
"You had ten years to tell me the truth.""
He stared at me.
Then his voice broke.
"Thomas told me that if I didn't cooperate, he would reveal who your real father was.""
I froze.
"My real father?""
Everett nodded.
"Daniel Cross isn't your biological father.""
I stared at him.
"Your own birth certificate says he is.""
Everett shook his head.
"Your grandfather had another secret.""
Nathan looked at the adoption papers.
Then he noticed something.
A second page had been folded beneath the certificate.
He unfolded it.
His face changed.
"Claire," he whispered.
"What?""
He turned the document toward me.
The biological father's name had been amended.
May you like
The correction was dated twenty years earlier.
And the signature authorizing it belonged to William Hale.
