Chapter 3: The Name Behind the Money

The ballroom doors opened at exactly 9:47 p.m.

Four attorneys entered first.

Behind them walked Nathan Brooks, wearing a dark navy suit and carrying two leather document cases.

The company's chief financial officer, Martin Cole, followed.

Two security officers walked beside him.

Conversations stopped.

Everett turned toward the entrance.

"What is this?""

Nathan didn't answer him.

He walked straight toward me.

"Madame Chairwoman.""

I nodded.

"Thank you for coming.""

Nathan placed a folder on the table.

"The board has formally approved the emergency resolution. Mr. Hale's termination is effective immediately. His executive access has been suspended, and all discretionary financial authority has been frozen pending the investigation.""

Everett stared at him.

Then he laughed.

"You're making a mistake, Nathan.""

Nathan opened the folder.

"Mr. Hale, your employment termination was approved by the controlling shareholder and ratified by the board in accordance with the company's bylaws.""

"I am the controlling shareholder!""

"No, sir. You are not.""

Everett grabbed the folder.

His eyes moved across the first page.

Then the second.

His face gradually lost its color.

"What is Bennett Capital Trust?""

I folded my hands.

"You've known about the trust since the day the company was founded.""

"I thought it was just an investment vehicle!""

"It was never just an investment vehicle.""

Nathan addressed the guests.

"For clarity, Bennett Capital Trust holds 68 percent of Hale Global's voting authority. Claire Bennett Hale is the controlling decision-maker and chairwoman of the trust.""

A woman near the stage dropped her champagne glass.

Diane stared at me.

"That's impossible.""

Nathan continued.

"Mrs. Hale's family provided the company's founding capital, protected its intellectual property through the original holding structure, and retained controlling authority throughout its growth.""

Everett shook his head.

"No. I built this company.""

"You led its operations," Nathan replied.

"That is not the same as owning it.""

Vanessa stepped away from him.

"Everett, what is he talking about?""

Everett ignored her.

He grabbed my wrist.

"Claire, tell them this is some kind of misunderstanding.""

I pulled my hand away.

"Which part? The part where you fired yourself, or the part where you spent ten years pretending my family's money was yours?""

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Diane approached me.

"Claire, darling, surely we can discuss this privately.""

I looked at her.

Twenty minutes earlier, she'd called me barren in front of three hundred people.

Now she was calling me darling.

"Didn't you want me out of your son's house?""

She swallowed.

"I was upset.""

"You were very specific.""

"Please. We're family.""

I glanced at the wedding ring still resting in my palm.

"No, Diane. Apparently, I was only family when you needed my money.""

A few guests looked away.

Others openly watched.

Everett slammed the folder against the table.

"You can't do this! I have contracts worth hundreds of millions! Thousands of employees depend on me!""

Nathan calmly removed another document.

"The company will continue operating under its existing executive structure. The board has appointed an interim CEO effective immediately.""

"Who?""

Nathan looked at Martin Cole.

"Martin Cole will assume the position pending the permanent appointment.""

Everett turned toward the CFO.

"You knew about this?""

Martin adjusted his glasses.

"I knew the company's ownership structure, Mr. Hale. I also knew that the financial discrepancies required investigation.""

Everett pointed at him.

"You ungrateful little—"

"Careful," Nathan interrupted.

"Your corporate privileges have already been suspended.""

Vanessa suddenly began crying.

"Everett, you told me you owned everything!""

He turned sharply.

"Not now.""

"You said the house was yours. You said you were buying me an apartment in London!""

Diane looked horrified.

"Vanessa, please be quiet.""

But Vanessa had already lost control.

"You promised me the company would be ours!""

The guests exchanged glances.

I watched Everett's expression change.

For the first time that evening, he looked frightened.

Not embarrassed.

Not angry.

Frightened.

Nathan opened his second document case.

"Claire, there's another matter.""

He removed a thick financial report.

"During the preliminary investigation, our forensic accountants identified unauthorized transfers totaling $8.6 million. The money was moved through several consulting companies and ultimately deposited into a private account.""

"Whose account?"" I asked.

Nathan turned a page.

"That is where things become complicated.""

Everett stepped forward.

"Those were legitimate business expenses.""

Nathan looked at him.

"Then you'll have no difficulty explaining why the invoices contain fabricated vendor details.""

"I approved those payments!""

"Exactly.""

Vanessa wiped her tears.

"Everett, what money?""

He snapped at her.

"Stay out of this!""

Nathan placed a photograph on the table.

It showed a bank transfer authorization.

The receiving account was registered to a company called Reed Advisory Holdings.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Reed?""

She went pale.

Nathan nodded.

"The company is registered to Vanessa Reed.""

Vanessa shook her head violently.

"No. I don't know anything about this.""

Everett stared at her.

"You told me your brother handled the paperwork!""

"I don't have a brother!""

The room went silent.

Nathan turned another page.

"There is also a second account associated with the transfers. It was opened using an identity connected to an older Bennett family investment structure.""

My fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

"What does that mean?""

Nathan hesitated.

"Claire, the money didn't simply pass through Vanessa's company. A portion of it was transferred to an account authorized decades ago by someone in your family.""

I felt the air leave my lungs.

"My grandfather?""

"No.""

Nathan placed a photograph beside the report.

It showed an older man standing beside Everett at a private business dinner.

I recognized the man immediately.

My uncle.

Thomas Bennett.

My grandfather's only living son.

The man who had attended my wedding, walked me down the aisle when my father couldn't, and kissed my forehead afterward.

The man who had told me Everett was lucky to have me.

"That's impossible," I whispered.

Nathan lowered his voice.

"We discovered that Thomas Bennett signed a confidential amendment to the trust shortly before your wedding.""

I stared at the photograph.

"What amendment?""

Nathan opened the final envelope.

"An amendment granting him limited authority to approve certain transactions under specific circumstances.""

Everett suddenly stopped speaking.

Vanessa stopped crying.

Even Diane seemed to understand that something far more dangerous than a divorce had just emerged.

Nathan turned the final page toward me.

There was a signature at the bottom.

Thomas Bennett.

And beneath it was another name.

Everett Hale.

I looked at Nathan.

"Why is my husband's signature on a document dated three months before our wedding?""

Nathan took a slow breath.

"Because, Claire, your grandfather wasn't the only person who knew about the trust.""

He placed another photograph on the table.

It showed Everett and Thomas standing outside a private bank in Switzerland.

The date was ten years earlier.

The month before I married Everett.

I felt my heart pounding.

"Tell me what they were doing.""

Nathan glanced at the surrounding guests.

Then he leaned closer.

"Your grandfather discovered the arrangement shortly before he died. He instructed me to keep investigating until we could establish exactly what they had planned.""

He paused.

"And Claire, there's something else.""

I looked down at the photograph again.

Behind Everett and Thomas stood a young woman.

A woman I recognized.

A woman whose face was almost identical to Vanessa's.

Nathan whispered:

"Vanessa Reed wasn't a coincidence. Her connection to your family began long before she ever became Everett's mistress.""

I slowly raised my eyes.

"Who is she?""

Nathan opened his mouth.

But before he could answer, my phone rang.

The caller ID displayed a name I hadn't seen in years.

*THOMAS BENNETT.*

I answered.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then my uncle said something that made my blood run cold.

"Claire, sweetheart, whatever Nathan has told you, don't believe him. Your husband is the least dangerous person in that room.""

May you like

And then he added:

"Because the woman carrying Everett's child isn't the only secret your grandfather left behind.""
