Chapter 4: My Uncle's Terrifying Warning

"Claire, sweetheart, whatever Nathan has told you, don't believe him. Your husband is the least dangerous person in that room.""

My uncle's voice came through the phone, calm and familiar.

For a moment, I was twenty years old again, sitting in my grandfather's garden while Thomas Bennett taught me how to negotiate my first investment deal.

He had always called me sweetheart.

He had also just warned me not to trust the man who had spent ten years protecting my family's wealth.

I looked at Nathan.

"Put the call on speaker," he whispered.

I did.

"Uncle Thomas," I said, "why is your name on a confidential amendment to my grandfather's trust?""

A brief silence followed.

"Because your grandfather was dying, Claire. He wasn't thinking clearly. I was protecting the family.""

"From whom?""

"From Everett.""

I glanced at my husband.

Everett was standing near the table, sweating beneath his expensive tuxedo.

"Then why did you sign a document with him three months before our wedding?""

Thomas sighed.

"Because Everett came to me with a business proposal.""

"What kind of proposal?""

"The kind that would have made everyone in this family wealthy.""

Nathan stepped forward.

"Mr. Bennett, I advise you to stop speaking until we've reviewed the relevant documents.""

Thomas laughed.

"Nathan, you're still playing the loyal attorney? How touching.""

"Your authorization has been flagged in the preliminary audit.""

"An audit conducted by a woman who has no idea what she's looking at?""

I tightened my grip on the phone.

"Uncle Thomas, answer one question. Who is Vanessa Reed?""

The laughter stopped.

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then he said, "You should ask your husband why he chose her.""

I turned toward Everett.

He looked away.

"Everett?""

He rubbed his forehead.

"Claire, this isn't the place.""

"That's what you said when I asked about my grandmother's bracelet. That's what you said when Vanessa poured wine on me. You've spent ten years telling me when I can speak.""

I stepped closer.

"Not anymore.""

Thomas interrupted.

"Claire, listen carefully. You have no idea what your grandfather left in that trust. There are assets you don't know about, liabilities you haven't seen, and agreements that could destroy everything if you make the wrong move.""

Nathan took the phone from my hand.

"Mr. Bennett, the trust's emergency governance provisions are now active. Any unauthorized interference with its assets will be referred to the appropriate authorities.""

Thomas chuckled.

"You're bluffing.""

Nathan didn't blink.

"Then you won't mind receiving a formal notice tomorrow morning.""

The call ended.

I stared at my phone.

For ten years, Thomas had been the relative I trusted most after my grandfather's death.

He had attended my wedding.

He had visited me during the difficult months when Everett and I were trying to have a child.

He had sat beside me at family dinners and told me I deserved happiness.

Had every comforting word been a performance?

Nathan gently touched my arm.

"Claire, we need to leave.""

"Not yet.""

"There's nothing more you need to prove to these people.""

I looked toward Vanessa.

She was standing beside the stage, clutching her purse.

"Actually, there is.""

I walked toward her.

"Vanessa, how long have you known my uncle?""

Her lips parted.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

"Your photograph was taken outside a Swiss bank ten years ago. You were standing beside Thomas Bennett and my husband.""

She shook her head.

"That isn't possible.""

Everett stepped between us.

"Stop interrogating her.""

I looked at him.

"Why? Are you afraid she'll tell me something you haven't?""

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"Everett, you told me she would never find out.""

The entire ballroom seemed to inhale.

Everett grabbed her elbow.

"Shut up.""

She pulled away.

"You promised me!""

Diane hurried toward them.

"Vanessa, calm down. You're pregnant.""

Vanessa turned on her.

"Don't tell me to calm down! You said everything was arranged!""

I felt Nathan stiffen beside me.

"Arranged?"" I repeated.

Vanessa looked at me.

Her mouth trembled.

Then she reached into her purse and pulled out a folded envelope.

"I didn't want this to happen tonight.""

Everett lunged for it.

But Nathan's security officers moved between them.

"Mr. Hale, step back.""

Vanessa handed the envelope to me.

Inside was a photograph of a young woman standing beside my grandfather.

The woman was holding a newborn baby.

On the back, someone had written:

*To Thomas, with love. Keep our daughter safe.*

The date was twenty-nine years earlier.

I looked at the woman.

Then at Vanessa.

The resemblance was unmistakable.

"Who is the baby?"" I whispered.

Vanessa began crying.

"Me.""

My knees almost buckled.

Before I could ask another question, she added something that changed the meaning of everything.

"Claire, your grandfather knew about me. He was the one who paid for my education.""

I looked at Nathan.

He had gone completely still.

"Why didn't you tell me?"" I asked.

Nathan swallowed.

"Because I didn't know the full truth until this afternoon.""

He took the photograph and examined its back.

May you like

Then he looked at me with an expression I'd never seen before.

"Claire, I think we've been investigating the wrong person.""
