Chapter 5: The Daughter My Grandfather Hid

The following morning, I sat inside the private conference room of Bennett Capital Trust.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked Central Park.

A pot of untouched coffee sat between Nathan and me.

I hadn't slept.

The photograph of Vanessa as a baby remained on the table.

Beside it lay my grandfather's original estate documents.

"Start from the beginning," I told Nathan.

He opened a thick file.

"Your grandfather had a relationship with a woman named Eleanor Reed before he married your grandmother.""

I frowned.

"My grandfather never mentioned anyone named Eleanor.""

"She was an employee at one of his early investment companies. Their relationship ended before he married your grandmother.""

"And Vanessa?""

"According to the records we've found, Vanessa was born from that relationship.""

I looked at the photograph again.

"Then she's my aunt's daughter? Or my cousin?""

Nathan hesitated.

"She's your half-sister.""

The words seemed to echo inside my head.

My grandfather had another daughter.

A daughter who had been hidden from our family.

And her child had spent the last several years working inside my husband's company.

"Does Thomas know?""

"Yes. He was aware of Vanessa's parentage from the beginning.""

I stood and walked toward the windows.

"Why would my grandfather hide this from me?""

Nathan turned a page.

"He didn't hide it from everyone. He established a private education and maintenance fund for Vanessa. He also instructed the trustees to protect her identity until she was old enough to make her own decisions.""

"Then why did Thomas have access to her?""

"Because he was appointed as an administrator of the family arrangement.""

I turned around.

"And Everett?""

Nathan opened another folder.

"Everett discovered Vanessa's identity approximately four years ago.""

I stared at him.

"Four years?""

"Yes.""

"How?""

"Through a private background investigation conducted when he was considering expanding Hale Global into a new market. He found references to her educational trust.""

My stomach tightened.

"Did he approach her because of the money?""

Nathan didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he slid a document toward me.

It was a contract between Hale Global and Reed Advisory Holdings.

The agreement was dated three years earlier.

Vanessa's company had received consulting fees totaling $2.4 million.

"She was twenty-six when this contract was signed," Nathan explained.

"Her company had no employees, no registered office, and no documented business activity.""

"So it was a shell company.""

"That's what the preliminary evidence suggests.""

I lowered myself into the chair.

"Everett used her identity to move money.""

"Possibly. But there's more.""

Nathan placed another document in front of me.

It was an internal email from Everett to Thomas.

The subject line read:

*THE BENNETT SUCCESSION PLAN.*

I began reading.

The girl trusts me. Claire has no reason to suspect anything. Once the voting amendment is finalized, we can move the remaining assets without triggering a review.

My fingers went cold.

There was another sentence.

Vanessa understands her role. She will cooperate until the final transfer is completed.

I looked up.

"Her role?""

Nathan nodded.

"We believe Everett and Thomas were using her as an intermediary.""

"Did Vanessa know?""

"We don't know yet.""

I pushed the document away.

"She told me she was pregnant.""

Nathan closed the folder.

"We need to verify that independently.""

"Why?""

"Because the ultrasound photograph she displayed last night may not establish what she claimed. We found inconsistencies in the medical documentation she submitted to the company's benefits administrator.""

I stared at him.

"Are you saying she might not be pregnant?""

"I'm saying we cannot rely on her statements without verification.""

Before I could respond, the conference room door opened.

Martin Cole entered carrying a tablet.

"Claire, I'm sorry to interrupt.""

"What happened?""

He placed the tablet on the table.

"Someone accessed the company's archived shareholder records overnight.""

Nathan immediately stood.

"Which records?""

"The original Bennett Capital Trust agreements. Specifically, the amendment signed ten years ago.""

I looked at the screen.

A security log displayed the access details.

The login had been authorized using a senior administrator's credentials.

Martin pointed to the name.

*THOMAS BENNETT.*

Nathan swore under his breath.

"He knows we're investigating.""

"Can he alter the documents?"" I asked.

"Not the originals. But he may attempt to manipulate the copies stored in the company's internal system.""

Martin enlarged another entry.

"There was also an attempted transfer of intellectual property rights to a private holding company at 2:13 a.m.""

"Was it successful?""

"No. We froze the transaction.""

Nathan looked at me.

"This is no longer simply a corporate dispute.""

I stared at the tablet.

"Then what is it?""

Martin hesitated.

"An attempt to take control of the company before the trust can exercise its full authority.""

My phone vibrated.

A message from an unknown number appeared.

*You think Everett married you for love? Ask him what happened to your grandfather's original will.*

I read it twice.

Then another message arrived.

*He didn't just hide Vanessa. He helped Thomas make sure you would never inherit the family estate.*

I slowly looked at Nathan.

"Where is my grandfather's original will?""

Nathan's face changed.

"It's supposed to be in the Bennett family vault.""

"Supposed to be?""

He picked up his phone.

"Martin, call the vault administrator. I want an immediate inventory.""

Martin left the room.

Nathan turned back to me.

"Claire, there's something your grandfather told me shortly before he died.""

"What?""

"He said that if Thomas ever tried to change the trust documents, I should look for a second will.""

"A second will?""

Nathan nodded.

"He said the first one was written for the family. The second was written for the truth.""

I felt my pulse quicken.

"Where is it?""

Nathan looked at the photograph of Vanessa.

"Your grandfather never told me. But he left one instruction.""

"What instruction?""

Nathan leaned forward.

"Find the person who has been paying Vanessa's expenses since she was born. That person knows where the second will is hidden.""

I stared at him.

"Who paid her expenses?""

Nathan opened an old bank statement.

The name appeared beneath a series of monthly transfers.

Not Thomas.

Not my grandfather.

Not Everett.

It was my grandmother.

*Margaret Bennett.*

My grandmother had been dead for twelve years.

And according to the records, she'd continued making payments to Vanessa's private account for six years after her death.
