Chapter 9: The Door
Nobody moved.
The elevator doors opened somewhere beyond the conference room.
Then came footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
Michael whispered, “Stay here.””
Emily grabbed his sleeve.
“Absolutely not.””
He picked up his phone.
“I’m calling building security.””
Vanessa closed the laptop and pulled out the flash drive.
“Give me that.””
Michael shook his head.
“If Daniel gets inside—”
“He won't.””
“You don't know that.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Make another copy.””
Michael nodded.
“Good.””
He inserted a second drive.
The footsteps stopped outside.
Three knocks.
“Sarah.””
Daniel.
My entire body stiffened.
Emily whispered, “Police.””
She dialed 911.
Daniel knocked again.
“I know you're in there.””
Michael stood near the door.
“Mr. Carter, leave the property.””
Daniel laughed.
“Michael. Still pretending to be the hero?””
“You've been told to leave.””
“I came for my wife.””
I walked toward the door.
Emily grabbed my arm.
“Don't.””
I stopped several feet away.
“I’m not your wife anymore, Daniel.””
Silence.
Then his voice softened.
“Sarah, please.””
That voice.
The one he'd used when my father died.
The one he'd used when we lost our first pregnancy.
The one he'd used on our wedding night.
For one dangerous second, grief overwhelmed fear.
“Come home,” he said.
“No.””
“We can fix this.””
“You forged my signature.””
“I was protecting us.””
“You tried to have me declared incompetent.””
“You don't understand what those documents were for.””
“Then explain them through the door.””
Silence.
Vanessa handed Michael the copied drive.
Daniel spoke again.
“Is Vanessa there?””
Nobody answered.
His voice changed.
“Vanessa?””
She stepped forward.
“Yes.””
“You stole company files.””
“You used my company to move money.””
“You participated willingly.””
“I participated in what you told me were legal transfers.””
Daniel laughed.
“You think anyone will believe that?””
Vanessa's face tightened.
“They might believe the emails.””
Silence.
That landed.
Then Daniel said, “What emails?””
Vanessa smiled without humor.
“The ones you forgot I kept.””
The doorknob moved.
Locked.
Daniel tried it again.
Michael raised his voice.
“Police are coming.””
Daniel stopped.
Then we heard another voice outside.
A man's voice.
“Mr. Carter?””
Daniel said something too quiet to hear.
Michael looked through the peephole.
His face changed.
“What?””
“Building security.””
He unlocked the door only after confirming.
Two security guards stood in the hallway.
Daniel stood between them.
His tuxedo jacket was gone.
His tie hung loose.
He looked exhausted.
Human.
That frightened me more than the polished version.
One guard said, “Mr. Carter claims his wife may be experiencing a medical emergency.””
I stared at Daniel.
“You actually did it.””
Daniel raised both hands.
“Sarah, look at yourself.””
“What?””
“You're running around Chicago with stolen documents. You're accusing doctors and attorneys of conspiracies. You're hiding in an office at midnight.””
Emily stepped forward.
“Because you slapped her!””
Daniel ignored her.
He looked at the guards.
“My wife has been under extreme psychological stress.””
“Stop.””
“She hasn't slept properly in weeks.””
“Stop talking.””
“She has become increasingly paranoid.””
My blood boiled.
Then I understood.
This was another performance.
Another audience.
He wasn't trying to convince me.
He was creating witnesses.
I forced myself to become still.
“Officer,” I said calmly to the guard, “my husband struck me publicly tonight. Hotel security witnessed the aftermath. Police are on their way. I do not consent to leaving with him.””
Daniel's jaw tightened.
The guard nodded.
“Understood.””
Daniel stepped toward me.
“Sarah, you're proving exactly what Dr. Keller warned me about.””
I almost reacted.
Almost.
Instead, I smiled.
“Interesting.””
He frowned.
“What?””
“You just admitted you've discussed my mental health with Dr. Keller.””
His eyes flickered.
Michael lifted his phone.
“And you're being recorded.””
Daniel went silent.
Vanessa whispered, “Got you.””
His face hardened.
Then he looked at me with something I had never seen before.
Hatred.
Pure and cold.
“You have no idea what you've done.””
I held his gaze.
“I finally do.””
Police arrived minutes later.
Two officers took statements.
I showed them the video of Daniel slapping me that Emily had found online.
One angle captured everything clearly.
My wine hitting Vanessa.
Daniel striking me.
The officer asked if I wanted to make a report.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked stunned.
“Sarah.””
I didn't look at him.
“Yes.””
The officer separated him from us.
For once, Daniel couldn't control the room.
But while one officer spoke with him, Michael pulled me aside.
“We need to deal with the guardianship petition immediately.””
“Can Daniel actually get control of me?””
“Not automatically. He would need court action and evidence. The documents we've found may help challenge his claims.””
“When?””
Michael checked something on his phone.
Then frowned.
“What?””
“The filing.””
“What about it?””
He turned the screen toward me.
The emergency petition had already been submitted.
A hearing was scheduled.
“For when?””
Michael looked up.
“Tomorrow morning.””
Emily whispered, “That fast?””
“Emergency guardianship can move quickly when someone alleges immediate danger.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“Then we show the judge everything.””
Michael didn't answer.
“What?”” I asked.
“There’s a problem.””
“Of course there is.””
He opened the petition.
“Daniel isn't asking to be appointed your guardian.””
I stared at him.
“Then who is?””
He scrolled.
Proposed temporary guardian:
*Emily Bennett.*
My sister frowned.
“Who?””
Michael looked at her.
“Not you.””
Then I remembered.
Dr. Laura Bennett.
Emily's psychiatrist interviewer.
Michael shook his head.
“No. Different first name.””
He enlarged the filing.
*Emily Rose Bennett.*
The room went quiet.
Vanessa whispered, “Sarah...””
I knew that name.
I hadn't heard it in years.
But I knew it.
My father had spoken it exactly once.
Three days before he died.
He'd been in the hospital, weak from cancer, drifting between sleep and morphine.
He grabbed my wrist and whispered:
“If Daniel ever mentions Emily Bennett, don't sign anything.””
At the time, I thought he'd been confused.
I never asked Daniel.
I never searched the name.
My father died before explaining.
Michael stared at me.
“You know her?””
“I know the name.””
“How?””
“My father warned me about her.””
Daniel, standing across the hallway with the police officer, suddenly looked toward us.
He couldn't have heard me.
But somehow he knew.
His face changed.
I looked back at the petition.
Proposed guardian.
Emily Rose Bennett.
Then I noticed her listed address.
My breath stopped.
“No.””
“What?”” Michael asked.
I pointed at the screen.
The address belonged to a house in Lake Forest.
A house I knew better than any place on earth.
The house where I grew up.
The house my father left to me.
The house Daniel told me had been sold nine years ago.
I looked across the hallway at my husband.
May you like
He was already staring at me.
And this time, Daniel smiled.
