Chapter 1: The Necklace

“You embarrassed me in front of my entire company!””

Daniel’s voice cut through the ballroom seconds after his palm struck my face.

For a moment, I heard nothing else.

Not the jazz quartet.

Not the clinking glasses.

Not the hundred people staring at us beneath the crystal chandeliers.

Only the ringing in my left ear.

I slowly turned my face back toward my husband.

Daniel Carter stood in front of me in his black tuxedo, chest rising hard, his hand still half-raised.

Behind him, Vanessa Reed wiped red wine from her cheeks with a white napkin.

And she was smiling.

“You hit me,” I whispered.

Daniel glanced around the ballroom as if the witnesses embarrassed him more than what he had just done.

“Look what you did, Sarah.””

He pointed toward Vanessa.

Her silver dress was stained dark red from her chest to her waist.

“You attacked my employee.””

“I threw wine at the woman wearing my necklace.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

But after eleven years of marriage, I knew every version of his face.

That tiny tightening around his mouth meant fear.

Vanessa touched the gold chain around her neck.

The teardrop diamond caught the chandelier light.

My diamond.

Daniel had given it to me on our third wedding anniversary.

We had been broke then. Not truly broke, but close enough that every unexpected bill frightened us.

He had saved for months.

I still remembered him fastening the necklace around my neck in our tiny apartment kitchen.

“One day,” Daniel had whispered, “I’m going to give you everything.””

I had laughed.

“You already did.””

Our wedding date was engraved on the back.

June 14.

There could not be another necklace exactly like it.

“Tell her,” I said.

Daniel stared at me.

“Sarah—”

“Tell Vanessa where that necklace came from.””

Vanessa gave a soft laugh.

Several employees shifted uncomfortably.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Not here.””

That was the moment I knew.

Not suspected.

Knew.

Vanessa stepped closer to me.

Her perfume was sweet and expensive.

“You really should learn when to stop,” she murmured.

“Take it off.””

“No.””

“It belongs to me.””

Vanessa tilted her head.

“Daniel gave it to me.””

A murmur moved through the people closest to us.

Daniel grabbed Vanessa gently by the elbow.

“Vanessa, enough.””

I noticed the gentleness.

He had just slapped his wife.

But he touched his secretary like she was made of glass.

I laughed once.

It came out broken.

“How long?””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Sarah, we're leaving.””

“No. How long?””

Vanessa looked at Daniel.

He looked back at her.

That silent exchange lasted barely two seconds.

It told me more than any confession could have.

Then Vanessa reached inside the small silver purse hanging from her wrist.

She pulled out a hotel key card.

The logo matched the luxury hotel surrounding us.

The Ashford Chicago.

She held it between two fingers.

“You still think this is about a necklace?”” she whispered.

I stared at the card.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Give me that.””

Vanessa pulled it away.

“Why?””

“Vanessa.””

For the first time that evening, she looked surprised by his tone.

I reached for the card.

Daniel caught my wrist.

“Sarah, don't.””

“Let go of me.””

“Come home. We’ll talk.””

I looked at his hand wrapped around my wrist.

Then at the red mark forming on my cheek.

“Home?””

My voice cracked.

“The home where you opened our bedroom safe and took my anniversary necklace?””

His fingers loosened.

I pulled away.

Vanessa's smile returned.

“Maybe you should ask him about Room 1816.””

Daniel went completely still.

There it was again.

Fear.

Not anger.

Fear.

“What’s in Room 1816?”” I asked.

“Nothing,” Daniel said quickly.

Vanessa laughed.

“Oh, Daniel.””

He turned on her.

“Stop talking.””

She blinked.

“You said she already knew.””

The ballroom seemed to shrink around me.

“Knew what?””

Daniel grabbed my arm again.

“We are leaving.””

I jerked free.

“No.””

“Sarah.””

“No!””

My voice echoed beneath the chandeliers.

Several phones were raised now.

Daniel noticed them too.

His expression changed instantly.

He lowered his voice and straightened his jacket.

The polished CEO had returned.

“Everyone,” he announced, forcing a strained smile, “I apologize. My wife has had an emotional evening.””

My humiliation turned cold.

“You slapped me.””

“Sarah, please.””

“In front of everyone.””

He leaned closer.

“You are destroying my career.””

I stared at him.

“You're worried about your career?””

Vanessa stepped between us.

“Maybe both of you should calm down.””

I looked at her.

“You don't get to tell me to calm down while wearing jewelry stolen from my bedroom.””

“Stolen?””

She touched the pendant again.

“Daniel said everything in that house belongs to him.””

That sentence hit harder than the slap.

Because Daniel didn't deny it.

A hotel employee approached nervously.

“Mr. Carter? Is everything all right?””

Daniel nodded immediately.

“Family misunderstanding.””

Vanessa slipped the key card toward her purse.

I caught her wrist.

“Show me.””

“Get off me.””

“The card.””

“Sarah!”” Daniel barked.

Vanessa tried pulling away.

The card slipped from her fingers.

It landed faceup on the marble floor.

I bent before either of them could stop me.

Across the front was the hotel logo.

On the back, someone had attached a small printed reservation sleeve.

My fingers trembled as I opened it.

Room 1816.

Two guests.

Three nights.

And beneath that—

*Daniel Carter & Sarah Carter.*

I stopped breathing.

Vanessa had checked into a hotel room using my name.

I slowly looked up.

Daniel was pale.

“Why is she pretending to be me?””

Nobody spoke.

“Daniel?””

He swallowed.

“There’s an explanation.””

“Then explain.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Go ahead, Daniel.””

His eyes flashed toward her.

That was when I realized something else.

They weren't acting like two people protecting the same secret.

They were acting like two people who each knew different pieces of it.

Daniel reached for the reservation sleeve.

I pulled it against my chest.

“Don't touch me.””

“Sarah, you don't understand what you're looking at.””

“Then help me understand.””

Vanessa stepped beside me.

“Actually, I’d like to hear this too.””

Daniel stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She raised an eyebrow.

“You promised me tonight would make everything official.””

My stomach twisted.

“Official?””

Daniel's face hardened.

“Vanessa, shut up.””

She laughed bitterly.

“You told me the papers were ready.””

“What papers?”” I demanded.

Daniel said nothing.

Vanessa looked from him to me.

Then her confidence flickered.

“What do you mean, what papers?””

Daniel grabbed her elbow.

“We need to go upstairs.””

I saw genuine alarm enter Vanessa's eyes.

“Why?””

“Now.””

She yanked herself away.

“No. You told me Sarah signed them.””

My blood went cold.

“Signed what?””

Vanessa stared at me.

Daniel closed his eyes.

May you like

And for the first time that night, the smile disappeared from Vanessa's face.

“The divorce papers.””
