Chapter 6: The Man Behind the Camera

“Play it again.””

Vanessa and I sat in the back seat of Emily's car while rain hammered the windows.

Emily drove without speaking.

I replayed the ballroom footage.

Daniel fastened my necklace around Vanessa's neck.

Whispered something.

Looked toward the camera.

Thumbs-up.

Then I approached.

Emily finally broke the silence.

“That wasn't spontaneous.””

“No.””

“He knew you were coming.””

“Yes.””

“And somebody was watching.””

I paused the video on Daniel's raised thumb.

Vanessa leaned closer.

“That's not the security camera he's looking at.””

I turned toward her.

“What?””

“The angle is wrong.””

She took my phone and enlarged the image.

“The hotel security camera is mounted higher. Daniel is looking lower and farther left.””

Emily glanced at us in the mirror.

“So another camera?””

“The company video crew,” Vanessa said.

I remembered them.

Two cameramen had circulated throughout the ballroom recording speeches and employee interviews.

“Who hired them?””

Vanessa went silent.

“Vanessa?””

“Daniel asked me to.””

“Which company?””

“BrightLine Media.””

“Call them.””

She did.

Straight to voicemail.

She tried another number.

Disconnected.

“That's weird.””

Michael was waiting for us at his office.

He had insisted we shouldn't go to a police station until he'd reviewed the documents, unless I believed Daniel posed an immediate physical threat.

I wasn't sure what I believed anymore.

Emily parked beneath an office building in River North.

Before I opened the door, she grabbed my wrist.

“Sarah.””

I looked at her.

She touched my cheek gently.

The mark from Daniel's slap had darkened.

“You're not going back to him.””

It wasn't a question.

“No.””

For the first time that night, saying it didn't hurt.

It felt like breathing.

Michael Grant was younger than I expected.

Early forties, maybe.

He wore rolled-up shirtsleeves and looked like he hadn't slept properly in days.

The moment we entered his conference room, he locked the door.

“You brought the originals?””

I placed the hotel documents on the table.

He put on gloves.

Vanessa frowned.

“Why gloves?””

“Because if these signatures were forged, I want to preserve everything.””

He examined each page.

Emily sat beside me.

Vanessa remained standing.

Finally Michael pulled one document away.

“This one concerns me most.””

The medical authorization.

“Why?””

He pointed to the witness signatures.

One belonged to Rebecca Sloan, the notary.

The second belonged to—

Vanessa.

She stared.

“No.””

Her name was printed clearly.

*Vanessa Reed.*

Below it was a signature.

She stepped closer.

“That isn't mine.””

Michael looked up.

“You're sure?””

“I know my own signature.””

Daniel had forged hers too.

Vanessa sat down slowly.

Michael compared it with the contract she'd found in her suitcase.

“The handwriting is similar.””

“Similar to what?””

“The signature on the consulting agreement.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“I signed that one.””

Michael placed them side by side.

Emily whispered, “Someone practiced.””

The room went silent.

Vanessa's genuine signature was on the left.

The forged one was on the right.

Close enough to fool someone who wasn't looking carefully.

Not close enough now.

Michael opened his laptop.

“There's more.””

He pulled up an email chain.

Three weeks earlier, someone from Daniel's office had contacted Michael's former firm asking for urgent estate documents.

“The initial request was routine,” Michael explained.

“Then Daniel started sending instructions directly.””

He clicked an email.

I read it.

*Sarah's condition has deteriorated. We need the contingency documents ready before the acquisition announcement.*

My mouth went dry.

“What condition?””

“No diagnosis was specified.””

Another email.

*Martin believes an incident in a public setting may establish the pattern we need.*

Emily stood.

“That son of a—”

“Emily.””

“No, Sarah. He planned tonight.””

Michael nodded cautiously.

“It appears Daniel was discussing a potential public incident before tonight. We still need context and authentication.””

Vanessa looked sick.

“What exactly did he tell Martin?””

Michael opened another attachment.

A preliminary report.

*Subject demonstrates escalating jealousy toward female employees.*

*Subject exhibits irrational suspicion regarding marital fidelity.*

I laughed bitterly.

“Irrational?””

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

Michael continued reading.

*Possible aggressive response anticipated when confronted with perceived romantic rival.*

My hands began trembling.

Tonight hadn't simply been an affair exposed at the wrong time.

I had been placed on a stage.

Given a trigger.

Provoked.

Recorded.

And when I reacted, Daniel got exactly what he wanted.

Except for one thing.

He had hit me.

“Why did he slap me?”” I whispered.

Michael looked at me.

“If tonight was staged, I doubt that part was.””

“He lost control.””

“Possibly.””

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“Wait.””

She paced toward the window.

“The cameraman.””

“What about him?””

“Daniel spoke to one of them before the party.””

“Who?””

“I don't remember his name. Tall guy. Beard.””

“BrightLine employee?””

“I assumed so.””

She opened her email and searched.

“There.””

She turned her phone.

An invoice.

BrightLine Media.

Two camera operators.

*Evan Brooks.*

*Marcus Vale.*

Vanessa tapped Marcus's name.

Nothing.

She searched online.

Her expression changed.

“That's strange.””

“What?””

“I can't find him.””

Michael moved beside her.

“No website?””

“Nothing.””

Emily said, “Maybe he isn't online.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“BrightLine sent employee bios last week.””

She searched her inbox.

The original attachment was gone.

“Daniel has administrator access to my company email.””

Michael looked at her sharply.

“Can he remotely delete messages?””

“Yes.””

As if summoned by the question, Vanessa's phone chimed.

Then again.

Again.

Dozens of notifications.

She stared at the screen.

“My email password just changed.””

Michael immediately said, “Airplane mode.””

She activated it.

My own phone buzzed.

A message from Daniel.

*Sarah, come home. We need to talk before you destroy both of us.*

I blocked his number.

Three seconds later, another text arrived from an unknown number.

*Your husband isn't the only person lying to you.*

Attached was a photograph.

I opened it.

My breath stopped.

The picture had been taken inside Michael's office.

This office.

The same conference room.

The same table.

Michael was sitting where he sat now.

But the photograph was dated six days earlier.

Across from him sat Daniel.

Emily looked from the photograph to Michael.

“You said you've been trying to warn my sister for three weeks.””

Michael's face lost all color.

Vanessa stepped away from him.

I stood.

“Why was my husband here six days ago?””

Michael said nothing.

I held up the phone.

“Answer me.””

He looked toward the locked conference-room door.

Then back at me.

“Because Daniel came here to buy my silence.””

My heart hammered.

“And did you take his money?””

Michael slowly reached into his desk drawer.

Emily moved in front of me.

“Keep your hands where we can see them.””

“I'm not reaching for a weapon.””

He removed a thick envelope.

Inside was a cashier's check.

*$250,000.*

Payable to Michael Grant.

Vanessa whispered, “Oh my God.””

Michael placed it on the table.

“I didn't cash it.””

“Why keep it?””

“Evidence.””

“Evidence you never told me about.””

“I couldn't reach you.””

“You're sitting in a photograph with my husband!””

Michael's voice rose.

“Because I needed him to believe I could be bought.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

“Because I needed to know what he was hiding.””

“And?””

Michael looked at Vanessa.

Then at me.

“What did he tell you?”” I asked.

Michael opened a folder.

Inside was a photograph of a man I didn't recognize.

The tall man had a dark beard.

Vanessa gasped.

“That's him.””

“The cameraman?””

“Yes. Marcus.””

Michael nodded.

“His name isn't Marcus Vale.””

He slid the photograph toward me.

“Then who is he?””

Michael's answer came quietly.

“Dr. Martin Keller's brother.””

My skin went cold.

Emily whispered, “Why would the psychiatrist's brother be filming Sarah?””

Michael pulled one final page from the folder.

A payment record.

BrightLine Media had received $40,000.

Not from Daniel.

Not from Carter Strategic Holdings.

The payment had come from *Northlake Behavioral Health*.

The room went silent.

Then Vanessa stared at the date.

“Sarah.””

“What?””

She pointed.

The payment had been made four months ago.

Long before Daniel gave her my necklace.

Long before tonight.

Long before the supposed competency concerns had become urgent.

Michael looked at me.

“Whatever your husband is doing, Sarah, tonight wasn't the beginning.””

My phone buzzed again.

Another unknown number.

This time there was no photograph.

Only six words.

*Ask Emily what she signed yesterday.*

I slowly raised my eyes.

May you like

My sister was staring at my phone.

And from the look on her face, she already knew exactly what the message meant.
