Chapter 7: What Emily Signed

“Emily.””

My sister didn't answer.

She kept staring at the six words glowing on my phone.

*Ask Emily what she signed yesterday.*

Vanessa slowly backed away from the conference table.

Michael looked between us.

“What is that referring to?””

I ignored him.

“Emily.””

Her eyes finally met mine.

“I can explain.””

Those three words made my stomach drop.

Daniel had used them all night.

“Don't say that.””

“Sarah—”

“What did you sign?””

Emily lowered herself into a chair.

Her hands were trembling.

“Yesterday afternoon, Daniel came to my apartment.””

“What?””

“He said you didn't know he was coming.””

“Obviously.””

“He told me you two had been fighting.””

Vanessa muttered, “Of course he did.””

Emily looked ashamed.

“He said you hadn't been sleeping. That you were paranoid about the company. About money. About him cheating.””

A bitter laugh escaped me.

“So Daniel told you I was paranoid because I suspected something he was actually doing.””

“I didn't know that.””

“You could have called me.””

“I tried.””

I froze.

“When?””

“Yesterday. Twice.””

I pulled out my phone.

No missed calls from Emily.

She saw my expression.

“You didn't get them?””

“No.””

Michael leaned forward.

“Does Daniel have access to your phone account?””

I almost answered no.

Then remembered our family plan.

Daniel managed it.

“He pays the account.””

Michael's expression tightened.

“That doesn't automatically mean he could intercept calls, but we should preserve your phone and account records.””

I looked back at Emily.

“What did you sign?””

She swallowed.

“Daniel brought a doctor with him.””

Vanessa whispered, “Keller?””

“No. A woman. Dr. Laura Bennett.””

Michael immediately typed the name into his laptop.

Emily continued.

“She said she was helping Daniel document concerns about your behavior.””

“What behavior?””

“She asked whether you'd seemed stressed.””

“And?””

“I said yes.””

My voice sharpened.

“Why?””

“Because you had! You've been stressed for months.””

“My husband was lying to me for months!””

“I know that now.””

“What else?””

Emily's eyes filled.

“She asked whether you'd ever made impulsive financial decisions.””

My mother's furnace.

I knew before Emily said it.

“I mentioned the money you sent Mom.””

“Four thousand dollars.””

“I know.””

“From my own savings.””

“I know.””

“Anything else?””

Emily wiped her cheek.

“She asked if you'd become suspicious of Daniel.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“And you said yes,” I whispered.

“I told her you'd asked me two months ago whether I thought Daniel was acting strange.””

I remembered that conversation.

Emily and I had been shopping.

I'd mentioned Daniel hiding his phone whenever I entered the room.

She had laughed and told me executives were always secretive.

A normal conversation between sisters.

Now it was evidence of mental instability.

“What did you sign?””

“A statement summarizing the interview.””

“Did you read it?””

Emily's silence answered me.

“Emily.””

“I skimmed it.””

I stood so quickly my chair scraped backward.

“You signed a document about my mental health without reading it?””

“I thought Daniel was trying to help you!””

“He was trying to take control of me!””

“I didn't know!””

Her voice broke.

That stopped me.

Emily wasn't Daniel.

She hadn't built this trap.

But he had used her.

Just like Vanessa.

Maybe just like me.

Michael turned his laptop around.

“I found Dr. Bennett.””

A professional profile appeared.

Psychiatrist.

Consultant.

And at the bottom—

*Northlake Behavioral Health.*

Vanessa whispered, “They're all connected.””

My phone buzzed.

Another unknown message.

*She didn't just sign a statement.*

An attachment appeared.

A scanned document.

Emily stood beside me as I opened it.

Her face collapsed.

“No.””

At the top:

*PETITION FOR EMERGENCY GUARDIANSHIP — SUPPORTING FAMILY DECLARATION*

My sister's signature was at the bottom.

I read the paragraph above it.

*I believe my sister, Sarah Elizabeth Carter, may currently lack the ability to make safe financial and personal decisions without supervision.*

My knees weakened.

Emily grabbed the table.

“I never read that.””

“It's your signature.””

“I signed one page. They told me it was a summary.””

Michael took the phone.

“They may have substituted pages.””

Emily started crying.

“Sarah, I swear to you.””

I stared at the signature.

My own sister.

The person I had called tonight because I trusted her more than anyone.

Daniel had turned her into evidence against me.

Vanessa suddenly asked, “Who keeps sending these messages?””

Nobody answered.

That question had been sitting beneath everything.

Someone knew where we were.

Someone knew what Daniel had done.

Someone knew what Emily signed.

Michael looked toward the ceiling.

“There's no camera in this room.””

“You sure?”” Vanessa asked.

“Yes.””

“Then how did they know we were discussing Emily?””

I checked the number.

Blocked.

No identification.

Emily whispered, “Could Daniel be doing it?””

“Why expose himself?”” I asked.

Michael leaned back.

“Maybe it isn't Daniel.””

My phone rang.

Unknown caller.

Everyone froze.

“Don't answer,” Emily whispered.

I did.

“Hello?””

A distorted voice came through.

“Mrs. Carter?””

“Who is this?””

“You need to stop trusting people who apologize only after they're caught.””

My eyes moved involuntarily toward Vanessa.

She saw it.

The caller continued.

“Ask Vanessa about the flash drive.””

Vanessa went white.

I lowered the phone.

“What flash drive?””

She shook her head.

“Sarah—”

The caller laughed softly.

Then disconnected.

I stared at Vanessa.

“Please don't tell me you can explain.””

She closed her eyes.

“I can.””

“Of course you can.””

She opened her purse.

From a small inside pocket, she removed a black USB drive.

Michael stood.

“What is on that?””

Vanessa placed it on the table.

“Copies of Daniel's private company files.””

I stared at her.

“You stole them?””

“I copied them.””

“Why?””

“Because six months ago, I stopped believing Daniel was ever going to leave you.””

That confession landed differently from the others.

She wasn't protecting me.

She had been protecting herself.

“So you collected leverage.””

“Yes.””

“What kind?””

“Emails. Payments. Acquisition documents.””

Michael asked, “Anything involving Northlake?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“I don't know.””

He reached for the drive.

She covered it with her hand.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because there are things on here that could send me to prison too.””

Michael stared at her.

“Vanessa, we are already discussing forged legal documents and a potentially fraudulent guardianship petition.””

“I know.””

“Then this isn't the time to protect your career.””

She looked at me.

“I wasn't just sleeping with Daniel.””

I waited.

She swallowed.

“I helped him move money.””

“How much?””

“Millions.””

The room went silent.

“From where?””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“From the company.””

Michael's expression changed.

“Into what?””

“Shell companies.””

“Which ones?””

Vanessa whispered the first name.

“V.R. Consulting.””

I stared at her.

She continued.

“And three others.””

“Who owns them?””

“I thought Daniel did.””

Michael asked, “You thought?””

Vanessa pushed the flash drive toward him.

“I found out last month that one of them was registered using Sarah's identity.””

My blood went cold.

“Which one?””

Vanessa looked directly at me.

“Carter Meridian Holdings.””

Michael typed rapidly.

Then stopped.

His face changed.

“What?””

He turned the laptop toward me.

A corporate registration filled the screen.

*Carter Meridian Holdings LLC*

Managing Member:

*Sarah Elizabeth Carter.*

I had never heard of it.

Then Michael scrolled down.

The listed assets made my breath disappear.

Real estate.

Investment accounts.

Corporate shares.

More than twelve million dollars.

Emily whispered, “Sarah...””

I couldn't speak.

Vanessa looked at the flash drive.

“That company is either the place Daniel has been hiding money from you...””

May you like

She paused.

“...or the place he's been hiding money under your name.””
