Chapter 14: Daniel’s Confession
By the time police reached Carter Strategic, Daniel was gone.
So was Keller.
There were no signs of a struggle.
Daniel's office safe was open.
Empty.
But Keller had missed one thing.
The security server.
Vanessa knew where it was.
By 6:40 a.m., police had footage showing Keller entering Daniel's office.
Twenty-three minutes later, both men left separately.
Daniel looked terrified.
Keller looked calm.
Laura Sloan was found at Northlake shortly afterward.
Alive.
Police discovered her locked inside an unused consultation room.
She had bruises on her wrists but no major injuries.
Keller was no longer at the facility.
At 8:15, Michael and I entered court.
I hadn't slept.
My cheek was bruised.
My dress still carried tiny drops of wine.
I considered changing.
Then decided against it.
I wanted the judge to see exactly what Daniel's carefully engineered evening had produced.
Vanessa sat behind me with Emily.
Emily Bennett had provided every trust document she possessed.
Laura was being interviewed by police.
Daniel was absent.
Dr. Keller was absent.
Dr. Laura Bennett was present.
She sat across the courtroom beside an attorney.
When she saw Emily, she looked away.
The hearing began.
Daniel's attorney asked for a postponement.
Michael stood.
“Your Honor, we oppose any continuation of an emergency petition built on evidence we believe may have been manipulated.””
The judge looked at him.
“That's a serious allegation.””
“Yes.””
Michael presented the forged signatures.
Emily's declaration.
The original audio interview showing that her words had been changed.
Then the ballroom footage.
Vanessa wearing my necklace.
Daniel watching.
Me approaching.
The wine.
The slap.
The second camera angle showed something we hadn't noticed before.
Seconds before I threw the wine, Daniel looked directly at the videographer.
Then nodded.
The judge watched twice.
Dr. Bennett shifted in her chair.
Michael called Emily.
My sister told the truth.
Every humiliating part.
“I signed without reading the full document,” she said.
Daniel's attorney asked, “Because you were concerned about your sister?””
“I was concerned because Daniel told me to be.””
“Had Sarah appeared stressed?””
“Yes.””
“Suspicious?””
“Yes.””
“Emotionally volatile?””
Emily looked at me.
Then back at him.
“If your husband was cheating on you, stealing millions under your name and secretly trying to have you declared incompetent, how calm would you be?””
The judge interrupted before the attorney could answer.
“Ms. Carter, answer only the questions asked.””
“Yes, Your Honor.””
But the point had landed.
Then Vanessa testified.
She admitted the affair.
Admitted helping Daniel move money.
Admitted provoking me.
She didn't minimize anything.
Daniel's attorney attacked her credibility.
“You committed adultery with a married man.””
“Yes.””
“You moved company funds.””
“Yes.””
“You stole confidential files.””
“Yes.””
“So why should anyone believe you?””
Vanessa looked toward me.
“Because I'm done lying just because the truth makes me look terrible.””
For the first time, I respected her.
Not forgave.
Respected.
Then the courtroom doors opened.
Everyone turned.
Daniel walked in.
Alone.
His tuxedo was wrinkled.
His hair was disordered.
There was dried blood near his collar.
I stood instinctively.
The bailiff moved toward him.
Daniel raised his hands.
“I need to speak to the judge.””
His attorney rushed over.
“Daniel, don't say anything.””
Daniel ignored him.
“Your Honor, withdraw the petition.””
His attorney whispered harshly, “Stop.””
Daniel looked at me.
“Sarah isn't incompetent.””
The courtroom went silent.
The judge leaned forward.
“Mr. Carter, are you represented by counsel?””
“Yes.””
“Then consult your attorney.””
“I don't need to.””
His attorney grabbed his arm.
Daniel pulled away.
“I fabricated evidence.””
A gasp moved through the courtroom.
My heart hammered.
Daniel continued.
“I forged Sarah's signatures.””
His attorney closed his eyes.
“I arranged the anniversary confrontation to make her appear unstable.””
Dr. Bennett stood.
“I need counsel.””
The judge ordered her to remain seated.
Daniel looked at her.
“You should.””
Then he turned back.
“Martin Keller helped design the competency case. Dr. Bennett altered family statements under his direction.””
Dr. Bennett shouted, “That's a lie!””
Daniel laughed.
“No, Laura. The lies are over.””
The judge ordered silence.
I stared at Daniel.
“Why are you doing this?””
He looked at me.
“Because Keller is going to kill you.””
The bailiff moved closer.
Daniel pulled something from his jacket.
Everyone reacted.
Officers reached for their weapons.
“Don't!””
Daniel dropped it onto the floor.
A flash drive.
“The ledger.””
Michael stared.
Daniel said, “Keller thought he took the original.””
“Where did you get that?”” I asked.
“I made a copy years ago.””
Of course.
Always insurance.
Always leverage.
“What's on it?””
“Everything.””
Daniel looked at the judge.
“Payments. Shell companies. Rebecca Sloan.
Northlake. The doctors.””
Then his eyes returned to me.
“And the plan for Sarah.””
My blood went cold.
“What plan?””
Daniel's face crumpled.
For the first time in eleven years, I saw something that looked like genuine shame.
“The guardianship was supposed to happen after the party.””
“I know.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You don't.””
He swallowed.
“Once I controlled your shares, Keller wanted you admitted to Northlake.””
Emily whispered, “Oh my God.””
“For how long?””
Daniel couldn't look at me.
“Indefinitely.””
My knees weakened.
Michael steadied me.
“And you agreed?””
“At first.””
The words destroyed whatever remained.
“At first?””
“I told myself I'd get you released after the acquisition.””
“You told yourself?””
“I was desperate.””
“You slapped me.””
“I know.””
“You stole from me.””
“I know.””
“You gave my mother's necklace to your mistress.””
His eyes filled.
“I know.””
“And you were going to lock me inside a psychiatric facility so you could sell my company.””
Daniel whispered, “Yes.””
I looked at him.
There was nothing left to save.
Not even hatred.
Only clarity.
The judge ordered Daniel taken into custody pending further investigation.
As officers approached, Daniel looked at me.
“Sarah.””
I didn't answer.
“There's one more thing.””
I almost walked away.
Then he said:
“Your father knew Keller was planning something before he died.””
I turned.
“What?””
“The video on the necklace isn't his last recording.””
My heart stopped.
“There’s another one?””
Daniel nodded.
“Keller has it.””
“Where?””
Daniel looked toward the courtroom doors.
Then every phone in the room buzzed at once.
Emergency alert.
Police bulletin.
Michael checked his screen.
His face changed.
“What?””
He showed me.
Martin Keller's vehicle had been found abandoned.
Inside were Daniel's phone and a handwritten note.
