Chapter 2: Room 1816
“I never signed divorce papers.””
Vanessa stared at me.
Daniel stared at the floor.
The ballroom around us became unbearably quiet.
Vanessa turned toward him.
“Daniel?””
He reached for her.
“Not here.””
She stepped back.
“You told me she signed them three weeks ago.””
“I said we were handling it.””
“No. You said she signed them.””
My hands were shaking, but my mind suddenly felt strangely clear.
“What exactly has my husband been telling you?””
Vanessa looked at me.
Her makeup was streaked with wine now.
For the first time, she didn't look smug.
She looked uncertain.
“He said your marriage had been over for a year.””
I almost laughed.
“A year?””
“He said you were living separately inside the house.””
“We shared breakfast this morning.””
Daniel snapped, “Sarah, stop.””
I ignored him.
“He kissed me before he left for work.””
Vanessa's eyes moved toward Daniel.
“He said that was for appearances.””
“In our kitchen?””
Daniel stepped between us.
“This is getting ridiculous.””
I looked at him.
“Give me your phone.””
“No.””
“Give me your phone.””
“Absolutely not.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Interesting.””
Daniel turned sharply.
“What?””
She reached into her purse.
“If we're sharing phones, let's share everything.””
His face changed.
“Vanessa.””
She pulled out hers.
“Don't.””
She unlocked it.
I moved closer.
Daniel tried taking it.
Vanessa shoved his hand away.
“Touch me again and I scream.””
People were already watching.
Daniel froze.
Vanessa opened their messages.
I expected flirtation.
Pictures.
Hotel plans.
What I saw was worse.
Messages from Daniel stretched back fourteen months.
*I told Sarah tonight.*
*She knows we're finished.*
*My lawyer is preparing everything.*
*Sarah agreed not to fight me.*
*Once the company anniversary is over, we'll stop hiding.*
I scrolled.
Then I saw a photograph.
My bedroom.
My safe.
Open.
My jewelry boxes scattered across the bed.
The timestamp was from six weeks earlier, when I had spent a weekend visiting my mother in Milwaukee.
Beneath it, Daniel had written:
*Pick something. Consider it an early celebration.*
My throat tightened.
Vanessa saw where I was looking.
“He told me those were family pieces.””
“That necklace was mine.””
She touched it.
Her fingers suddenly looked less confident.
“Take it off.””
This time she did.
She unclasped the chain and dropped it into my palm.
I closed my fingers around it.
Daniel whispered, “Vanessa, don't do this.””
She stared at him.
“You made me wear your wife's anniversary necklace?””
“I can explain.””
“And booked our room under her name?””
“That was for privacy.””
“Privacy?””
Vanessa laughed.
Then her expression shifted.
“Wait.””
She looked at the reservation sleeve in my hand.
“Why did you use Sarah's name?””
Daniel said nothing.
Vanessa snatched the sleeve.
She studied it.
“I thought you used an alias.””
“You didn't look at it when you checked in?”” I asked.
“Daniel checked us in.””
Something was wrong.
I could feel it.
The affair was obvious now.
But Daniel wasn't merely hiding an affair.
He was hiding something from both of us.
I looked toward the elevators.
“Room 1816.””
Daniel stepped in front of me.
“No.””
“I’m going upstairs.””
“You’re going home.””
“You lost the right to tell me where I'm going when you hit me.””
His face reddened.
“Sarah, if you go upstairs, you're going to make this much worse.””
“For whom?””
He didn't answer.
I started walking.
Vanessa followed.
Daniel cursed under his breath and came after us.
The elevator ride felt endless.
Vanessa stood on one side.
Daniel on the other.
I watched the illuminated numbers climb.
12.
13.
14.
Daniel finally spoke.
“Sarah, whatever you see upstairs, don't jump to conclusions.””
Vanessa turned.
“What the hell does that mean?””
“Nothing.””
“You've been lying to both of us.””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“Vanessa, you're not innocent here.””
“I never said I was.””
Her words surprised me.
She looked at me.
“I knew he was married.””
At least she didn't pretend.
“I knew,” Vanessa continued.
“And I believed what I wanted to believe.””
“Vanessa,” Daniel warned.
She ignored him.
“But I did not know he was stealing from you.””
The elevator reached eighteen.
The doors opened.
Daniel moved first.
He blocked the hallway.
“Sarah.””
“Move.””
“No.””
Vanessa pulled out another key card.
Daniel lunged for it.
I stepped between them.
“Don't touch her.””
He stared at me in disbelief.
Twenty minutes earlier, I had thrown wine in Vanessa's face.
Now I was protecting her from my husband.
The absurdity wasn't lost on me.
Vanessa held the card to the reader.
Green.
The lock clicked.
Daniel whispered, “Don't open that door.””
Vanessa pushed it open.
The suite was enormous.
Champagne waited in an ice bucket.
Rose petals covered the bed.
Two suitcases sat beside the dresser.
One belonged to Vanessa.
The other belonged to Daniel.
My husband had packed for three nights.
I walked farther inside.
On the table was a white envelope.
*Mrs. Sarah Carter.*
My name.
I reached for it.
Daniel grabbed it first.
“That's nothing.””
Vanessa snatched it from him.
He grabbed her shoulder.
She screamed.
“Get off me!””
I shoved Daniel back.
He stumbled into a chair.
“Don't touch either of us.””
His face transformed.
The charming executive disappeared.
“You two have no idea what you're doing.””
Vanessa tore open the envelope.
Inside were several documents.
She scanned the first page.
Her face drained of color.
“What?””
I took it from her.
At first, the language made no sense.
Transfer authorization.
Marital asset acknowledgment.
Beneficiary modification.
Then I saw my signature.
*Sarah Carter.*
Except I hadn't signed it.
I flipped to the next page.
Another signature.
Mine.
And another.
Mine.
My heart began hammering.
“What are these?””
Daniel reached toward me.
“Sarah—”
I backed away.
“What are these?””
Vanessa grabbed another document.
Then she whispered, “Oh my God.””
“What?””
She handed it to me.
It was connected to Daniel's company.
Carter Strategic Holdings.
A transfer involving shares Daniel had repeatedly told me were worthless until the company's next funding round.
But the document listed a valuation.
*$18.4 million.*
My signature appeared beneath a paragraph waiving any marital claim.
I looked at Daniel.
“You forged my signature.””
His lips parted.
I thought he would deny it.
May you like
Instead, he said something worse.
“You weren't supposed to see those yet.””
