Chapter 6: The Other Woman’s Confession

I couldn’t speak.

The coffee shop noise disappeared.

The conversations around me became distant.

All I could hear was Vanessa’s breathing.

“You’re probably wondering why I called,” she said.

I looked at Margaret.

She immediately understood.

Her expression hardened.

“Put it on speaker,” she whispered.

I did.

Vanessa noticed.

“Is Margaret there?””

“Yes.””

A shaky breath.

“Good.””

I frowned.

“Good?””

“Yes.””

Her voice sounded tired.

“Because she’s the only person who knows what really happened.””

I sat straighter.

“What happened?””

There was silence.

Then Vanessa said:

“David wasn’t supposed to marry you.””

The words hurt even though I already knew.

“Explain.””

“He told me he was ending things with you.””

“When?””

“Three months before the wedding.””

My fingers tightened around my phone.

“He told me he was trapped.””

Margaret looked down.

Vanessa continued.

“He said you were a good person, but he didn’t love you the way he used to.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“Then why did he stay?””

“Because of the wedding.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“It is.””

Her voice cracked.

“David cared about how people saw him.””

I remembered the altar.

The guests.

The dramatic exit.

Suddenly it made sense.

Vanessa continued.

“He didn’t want to be the man who canceled a wedding.””

I closed my eyes.

“So he planned to marry me and leave later?””

“Yes.””

The answer was immediate.

I felt sick.

“Why are you telling me this now?””

“Because I saw what happened.””

“What do you mean?””

“I was there.””

My eyes opened.

“You were at my wedding?””

“Yes.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“Where?””

“Near the back.””

I looked at Margaret.

She looked just as shocked.

Vanessa spoke quietly.

“I watched him take your ring.””

I swallowed.

“Why?””

“Because he was angry.””

“At me?””

“No.””

A pause.

“At himself.””

I didn’t understand.

Vanessa continued.

“David knew his secret was about to come out.””

“What?””

“He knew his mother had the evidence.””

Margaret whispered:

“He knew?””

Vanessa answered.

“Yes.””

The pieces started moving.

“He planned the scene,” Vanessa said.

“He wanted everyone to focus on your joke.””

My stomach turned.

“So nobody would ask why he was leaving.””

“Yes.””

I covered my mouth.

The humiliation.

The whispers.

The judgment.

All planned.

But then Vanessa said something I didn’t expect.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked down.

“Sorry for what?””

“For being part of it.””

Her voice broke.

“I thought David was leaving you because he loved me.””

I stayed silent.

“But then I realized something.””

“What?””

“He didn’t love me either.””

The sadness in her voice was real.

“He only loved the version of himself where he was always the victim.””

I didn’t know what to say.

For the first time, Vanessa wasn’t the enemy.

She was another person David had hurt.

Then she said:

“There’s one more thing you need to know.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“David has been telling people you attacked his mother because you wanted to humiliate her.””

My face went cold.

“He’s telling everyone that?””

“Yes.””

Margaret closed her eyes.

Of course he was.

He was rewriting the story.

Vanessa continued.

“But there’s something he doesn’t know.””

“What?””

“I have the original video.””

I froze.

“What video?””

“The one from the church.””

My heartbeat quickened.

“Everyone saw what happened.””

“No.””

Her voice became serious.

“Everyone saw the version David wanted them to see.””

A chill moved through me.

“What are you saying?””

“I recorded the entire thing.””

I stared at my phone.

“Why?””

“Because I knew David was capable of changing the story.””

She paused.

“And Elena…”

“Yes?””

“The video shows something that happened before your joke.””

I leaned forward.

“What?””

Vanessa’s voice dropped.

“David was already planning to leave before you ever said those words.””

Then my phone received a notification.

A video file.

Sent from Vanessa.

I looked at the screen.

The title was simple.

*Wedding_Rehearsal_Final.mp4*

But before I could press play, another message appeared.

May you like

From David.

*Don’t watch that video. You don’t know what you’re about to see.*
