Chapter 11: The Lie David Built Around Everyone
For a few seconds, I couldn’t speak.
The restaurant sounds disappeared.
The clinking glasses.
The conversations.
The music playing quietly in the background.
Everything faded.
Because David had just said the one thing I never expected.
Margaret created his affair.
I stared at him.
“Explain.””
David leaned back.
“I know what it looks like.””
“Do you?””
His expression tightened.
“Yes.””
“Because from where I’m sitting, it looks like you’re blaming another person again.””
His jaw clenched.
“I’m telling you the truth.””
I almost smiled.
“That’s funny coming from you.””
He looked hurt.
Good.
For once, I wanted him to feel something.
“Elena, before you decide what happened, hear me out.””
I said nothing.
He continued.
“When Margaret found out I was unhappy, she didn’t tell me to leave.””
“Because she wanted you to leave me?””
“No.””
His answer came too quickly.
I studied his face.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I’m telling you what happened.””
He looked down.
“She started pushing Vanessa toward me.””
My stomach twisted.
“Why?””
“Because she thought Vanessa was better for me.””
The words felt impossible.
“Margaret hated the idea of me being with someone she thought was wrong.””
I remembered Claire.
The warning.
The pattern.
A mother who interfered.
A son who blamed.
For a moment, doubt entered my mind.
David noticed.
“You see?””
He leaned forward.
“She has done this before.””
I stayed quiet.
“She ruined my relationship with Claire.””
I looked at him.
“She admitted that.””
His eyes narrowed.
“She told you?””
“Yes.””
That surprised him.
“She admitted she hurt Claire.””
I paused.
“But she also said she wasn’t the reason Claire left.””
David looked away.
“She would say that.””
“Why?””
“Because Margaret always needs to be right.””
I studied him.
There was something different.
Before, his lies were smooth.
Now they sounded desperate.
“What exactly did she do with Vanessa?””
David hesitated.
That hesitation bothered me.
“She introduced us.””
I frowned.
“Your mother introduced you to the woman you cheated with?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“What?””
“David, I knew Vanessa.””
“You knew of her.””
“No.””
I stared at him.
“She was already your coworker before that.””
He went quiet.
A mistake.
A small one.
But I noticed.
“You said your mother introduced you.””
David looked uncomfortable.
“I mean… she encouraged the friendship.””
“That’s not what you said.””
He looked away.
My heart started racing.
Because suddenly, I saw it.
The difference.
David didn’t have a story.
He had pieces.
Pieces he changed depending on what I asked.
I leaned forward.
“Did Margaret make you cheat?””
His face hardened.
“That’s not fair.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“That’s the question.””
Silence.
Finally, he whispered:
“No.””
The answer was quiet.
But I heard it.
“You chose.””
His eyes filled with frustration.
“I made mistakes.””
“Mistakes?””
I lowered my voice.
“You planned a wedding while planning an escape.””
He looked down.
“I was scared.””
“You were selfish.””
That hit him.
For a moment, neither of us spoke.
Then David pulled out his phone.
“I have proof.””
I stared at him.
“Proof of what?””
“That Margaret wanted us to fail.””
He opened a message.
From Margaret.
My eyes scanned it.
*You need to be honest with Elena before it’s too late.*
I looked up.
“That’s your proof?””
David frowned.
“She pressured me.””
I looked back at the message.
No.
It wasn’t pressure.
It was a warning.
He opened another message.
*If you marry her while feeling this way, you will hurt everyone.*
Then another.
*Do the right thing.*
I looked at David.
“You really think this proves your point?””
His face changed.
Because he realized.
It didn’t.
“You’re defending her now?””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I’m realizing something.””
“What?””
“You’re still trying to make someone else responsible for your choices.””
He looked angry.
“After everything I did for you?””
I stared at him.
There it was.
The sentence.
The guilt.
The reminder of everything he had given me.
The same thing he always used when he wanted control.
I stood.
“I came here because I wanted the truth.””
“Elena—”
“But you’re still protecting yourself.””
I walked away.
Behind me, David called my name.
I didn’t stop.
Because for the first time, I understood something.
The biggest lie David ever told wasn’t about Vanessa.
It was about himself.
He truly believed he was the victim.
That night, I received a message from Margaret.
Only five words.
*I found David’s hidden account.*
Attached was a screenshot.
A bank account.
A private one.
Opened six months before the wedding.
And the account holder name wasn’t David.
May you like
It was under a name I had never seen before.
*Elena’s Future Fund.*
