Chapter 3: The Secret He Took to the Altar
I read the email three times.
Not because I didn’t understand it.
Because I couldn’t accept it.
David had looked into my eyes the night before our wedding.
He had kissed my forehead.
He had told me, “Tomorrow is the first day of forever.””
And then he had written to another woman.
Rachel sat beside me on the couch, staring at the paper.
“Elena…”
I couldn’t answer.
My voice felt trapped somewhere inside my chest.
Margaret stood near the window.
She looked uncomfortable.
Like she hated being the person who had brought my world crashing down.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered.
I looked at her.
“For what?””
“For knowing something was wrong and still hoping my son would make the right choice.””
I folded the email.
“Why are you protecting me now?””
She looked surprised.
“I’m not.””
“Then why did you send me the picture?””
Margaret looked directly at me.
“Because I know what it feels like to marry someone who isn’t honest.””
The room went quiet.
I had never heard her talk about herself before.
“What happened?””
She sat down slowly.
“David’s father left when David was ten.””
I said nothing.
“He promised he was coming back.””
Her fingers tightened around her purse.
“He never did.””
I looked at her differently.
“Margaret…”
“I spent years telling David that love requires loyalty.””
Her voice cracked.
“I thought I raised him better.””
I looked back at the email.
Maybe that was what hurt most.
Not just the cheating.
The fact that David had made me feel guilty for one cruel sentence while hiding something much worse.
But another thought bothered me.
“Why did he leave with you?””
Margaret looked confused.
“What?””
“At the wedding.””
I stood.
“He was angry at me. Fine. But why take your hand and walk away like you were the victim?””
Her expression changed.
Like she had been waiting for that question.
“Because David wanted everyone to believe he was protecting me.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Margaret looked at the envelope.
“There is another reason he ended the wedding.””
I stepped closer.
“Tell me.””
She hesitated.
Then she pulled out her phone.
“There was a conversation I overheard two days before the ceremony.””
She pressed play.
A recording filled the room.
David’s voice came through the speaker.
“I can’t marry Elena and keep seeing Vanessa.””
My breath stopped.
Another voice answered.
Vanessa.
“Then don’t.””
David sighed.
“It’s complicated.””
“No, David. It’s simple. You’re scared.””
“I need time.””
“You don’t have time. The wedding is Saturday.””
There was a pause.
Then David spoke again.
“I’ll handle Elena.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
I felt like I had been punched.
“He was planning to leave me?”” I whispered.
Margaret nodded.
“I believe so.””
I sat down.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The anger at the altar.
The dramatic walk away.
The way he made everyone look at me.
He hadn’t just ended the wedding.
He had created a story where he was the wounded one.
Where I was the villain.
Where nobody would ask why the groom walked away.
I wiped my eyes.
“Why didn’t you stop him?””
Margaret looked away.
“Because I needed proof.””
I froze.
“What?””
She opened her phone again.
“I knew if I accused him, he would deny everything.””
She showed me another message.
This one was from David.
Sent that morning.
Hours before the wedding.
My hands went numb.
The message wasn’t to Vanessa.
It was to Margaret.
It said:
“After today, Elena will be the reason this marriage failed. Everyone will understand why I had to leave.””
I stared at the screen.
He had planned it.
He had planned to make me look like the person who destroyed our wedding.
My phone suddenly rang.
David.
For the first time since he walked away.
I answered.
His voice came immediately.
“Elena, we need to talk.””
I didn’t say anything.
He continued.
“I know you’re angry, but you don’t understand what happened.””
I looked at Margaret.
Then at the evidence sitting on the table.
“You’re right,” I said quietly.
“I don’t understand.””
A pause.
Then David said something that made my blood run cold.
“Elena, before you make any decisions, you need to know what your mother-in-law did to us.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
His voice lowered.
“Margaret isn’t the innocent person you think she is.””
I looked at the woman sitting across from me.
And for the first time, I wondered…
May you like
Was Margaret telling me the truth?
Or was David about to reveal the one secret that could destroy both of us?
