Chapter 13: The Debt That Changed Everything

I stood frozen in front of David.

For a moment, I thought I had misunderstood him.

“Margaret paid your debt?””

He looked away.

That was all the confirmation I needed.

“David.””

My voice was quiet.

“What debt?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“I didn’t want you involved.””

I almost laughed.

“Interesting.””

He looked at me.

“You didn’t want me involved, but you opened an account in my name.””

His face tightened.

“That wasn’t what it looked like.””

“Then explain.””

He hesitated.

And for the first time, I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Not regret.

Fear.

“I had financial problems.””

“How bad?””

He didn’t answer.

“How bad, David?””

He looked down.

“Bad enough that I could lose everything.””

I crossed my arms.

“And Margaret paid it?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His jaw clenched.

“Because she felt responsible.””

That answer confused me.

“Responsible for what?””

David looked toward the street.

“When I was younger, she made a mistake with money.””

I waited.

He continued.

“She signed something she shouldn’t have.””

“What does that mean?””

“She trusted the wrong person.””

I watched his face.

“Who?””

He didn’t answer.

“David.””

Finally, he whispered:

“My father.””

The name hung between us.

His father.

The man who abandoned Margaret and David years ago.

“My father left behind debts,” David said.

“Margaret spent years paying them.””

I looked at him.

“And then you repeated the same mistake?””

His face changed.

“I wasn’t trying to.””

“No?””

“I made an investment.””

“Without telling me?””

“It wasn’t your money.””

I stared at him.

“That’s your defense?””

He looked frustrated.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

I stepped closer.

“I don’t.””

My voice shook.

“Because I don’t understand how someone who says they love me can make decisions that could destroy my life without telling me.””

He looked hurt.

But I didn’t stop.

“You lied about Vanessa.””

Silence.

“You lied about the wedding.””

Silence.

“You lied about the account.””

His eyes dropped.

“And now you’re telling me everyone else is responsible.””

He whispered:

“I was trying to fix things.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“You were trying to hide things.””

That hurt him.

Good.

Because I was finally saying what I should have said months ago.

David sat down on the steps outside my apartment.

“I was ashamed.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I thought if I fixed the money problem, everything would be okay.””

“When did Vanessa happen?””

He closed his eyes.

“During the worst part.””

I laughed quietly.

“So when life became difficult, you found someone else.””

“No.””

“Yes.””

I looked away.

“You didn’t love Vanessa.””

He didn’t answer.

“You loved escaping.””

His silence was enough.

Then I asked:

“Why did you marry me?””

He looked up.

“I loved you.””

I waited.

“And?””

His expression broke.

“And I was scared.””

There it was.

The truth.

Not a good enough truth.

But finally, a real one.

“I was scared of losing you.””

I swallowed.

“You already lost me.””

His eyes filled.

“Elena…”

I stepped back.

“I spent years loving someone who only told the truth when he had nothing left to lose.””

Before he could answer, my phone rang.

It was Daniel.

The financial advisor.

I answered.

“Hello?””

His voice sounded urgent.

“Elena, I found something else.””

I looked at David.

“What?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“The account wasn’t created only for the debt.””

My stomach tightened.

“What else was it for?””

A pause.

Then:

“There was a transfer scheduled.””

“When?””

“The day after your wedding.””

I stopped breathing.

“What transfer?””

Daniel hesitated.

“Half a million dollars.””

I looked at David.

His face had gone pale.

“Where was it going?””

Daniel answered.

“To an account under Vanessa’s name.””

I ended the call.

Slowly.

Because suddenly, the last piece fell into place.

David wasn’t just planning to leave.

He was planning to leave with something.

Something that belonged to my future.

I looked at him.

“Did Vanessa know?””

He didn’t speak.

That was his answer.

I walked inside.

But before I closed the door, I heard him whisper:

“Elena…”

I turned.

For a second, I saw the man I used to love.

May you like

Then he said:

“There’s something about Vanessa you still don’t know.””
