Chapter 14: The Last Lie Falls Apart

I didn’t let David inside.

Not after everything.

Not after another secret.

I stood behind the closed door.

“Tell me.””

His voice came from the hallway.

“I didn’t plan to hurt you.””

I closed my eyes.

“Stop saying things like that.””

Silence.

“You always start with your intentions.””

My hand tightened around the doorknob.

“But I need to know your choices.””

A long pause.

Then David said:

“Vanessa knew about the money.””

I felt nothing.

That scared me.

Because a few weeks ago, that sentence would have destroyed me.

Now it was just another fact.

“How much did she know?””

“Everything.””

I opened the door slightly.

“Everything?””

He nodded.

“She knew about my debt.””

“She knew you were marrying me.””

“Yes.””

“She knew about the account?””

“Yes.””

I stared at him.

“Then why did she help you?””

His face changed.

“She thought we were leaving together.””

I almost smiled.

“You promised her that?””

“Yes.””

The honesty was brutal.

“When?””

“Before I met with you.””

I shook my head.

“You were going to marry me and leave with her.””

He looked away.

“I thought I could fix it.””

“You thought you could fix everything.””

My voice broke.

“You thought you could control everyone.””

He didn’t argue.

That was the first time.

The next day, I met Vanessa.

Not because I forgave her.

Because I needed closure.

She looked exhausted when she arrived.

“I know you hate me.””

I looked at her.

“I don’t hate you.””

She seemed surprised.

“I should.””

“Maybe.””

She nodded.

“But I don’t.””

I placed the documents on the table.

“The money.””

Her face changed.

“He told you.””

“Yes.””

She looked down.

“I didn’t know it was in your name.””

I studied her.

“Did you know he was planning to use me?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“No.””

“Then what did you think?””

She whispered:

“I thought he was choosing me.””

That answer was painfully familiar.

We were both women who believed David’s promises.

“He told me he was leaving because he was unhappy.””

I looked away.

“He told me the same thing.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I know.””

A silence passed.

Then she said:

“I have something for you.””

She pulled out a small flash drive.

“What is it?””

“More evidence.””

I frowned.

“More?””

She nodded.

“David deleted some messages.””

My heart stopped.

“How do you know?””

“Because he sent them to me before deleting them.””

I took the drive.

“What’s on it?””

“Voice recordings.””

My hands tightened.

“Of what?””

“David talking about the wedding.””

That night, I listened.

The first recording was David.

His voice.

Clear.

Cold.

“I just need to get through the ceremony.””

My chest tightened.

Another voice.

Vanessa.

“What about Elena?””

A pause.

Then David said:

“She’ll be hurt, but she’ll recover.””

I covered my mouth.

The recording continued.

“I just need everyone to see why I had to leave.””

Another voice.

“What if she finds out?””

David laughed.

“She won’t.””

The recording ended.

I sat there in silence.

Not crying.

Not screaming.

Just listening to the final proof of who he was.

The next morning, I made a decision.

I contacted everyone who had been at the wedding.

Not to explain.

Not to beg them to believe me.

To show them.

Rachel helped me organize everything.

The videos.

The messages.

The recordings.

The documents.

Within hours, the truth spread.

The same people who had judged me started deleting their comments.

Some apologized.

Some said nothing.

David called repeatedly.

I ignored him.

Then one final message appeared.

*You’re destroying my life.*

I stared at it.

Then replied:

*No, David. I’m showing people the life you built.*

For a while, everything went quiet.

Until one week later.

I received a letter.

No sender.

No return address.

Inside was a single document.

A legal notice.

My name was at the top.

May you like

And underneath it was a statement that made my heart stop.

*David was suing me.*
