Chapter 12: The Money Hidden in My Name
I stared at the screenshot.
At first, I thought it was another trap.
Another secret.
Another piece of my life that everyone knew except me.
The account name was mine.
But I had never opened it.
I called Margaret immediately.
She answered before the first ring finished.
“You saw it.””
“Yes.””
My voice was shaking.
“What is this?””
“I don’t know everything yet.””
“You said you found it.””
“I found evidence of it.””
I sat down.
“Margaret, why is there an account with my name?””
She took a breath.
“Because David created it.””
“Why?””
“That’s what we need to find out.””
The next morning, we met with a financial advisor Margaret knew.
His name was Daniel.
He looked through the documents carefully.
After twenty minutes, he removed his glasses.
“This is unusual.””
I leaned forward.
“How?””
“The account was opened using your personal information.””
My heart sank.
“Without my permission?””
“Yes.””
Margaret looked angry.
“Can he do that?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Not legally.””
I stared at the papers.
“Then why?””
Daniel turned the screen toward us.
“There are deposits.””
I looked.
Small amounts at first.
Then larger ones.
My eyes widened.
“Where did the money come from?””
Daniel scrolled.
“Several transfers from a business account.””
“Whose business account?””
He hesitated.
“David’s.””
I frowned.
“Why would he put money in an account under my name?””
Nobody answered.
Then Margaret whispered:
“Protection.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She looked at the records.
“I think he was preparing for something.””
The room went cold.
Preparing for what?
Daniel continued.
“There’s more.””
He opened another file.
“Six weeks before the wedding, he created documents listing this account as a shared emergency fund.””
I stared.
“Shared?””
“Yes.””
“But I didn’t sign anything.””
Daniel nodded.
“Exactly.””
A terrible thought entered my mind.
“What was he planning?””
Margaret looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
Then my phone buzzed.
A message from David.
*I know you’re looking into the account.*
My stomach dropped.
How did he know?
Another message followed.
*You need to stop before this gets worse.*
I showed Margaret.
Her face changed.
“He’s scared.””
“Of what?””
She looked at the documents.
“The truth.””
I replied.
*Why did you create an account in my name?*
The answer came quickly.
*Because I was trying to protect you.*
I almost laughed.
Protect me.
Everyone used that word.
But nobody ever asked what I wanted protection from.
I typed:
*From what?*
The three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally:
*From losing everything.*
I frowned.
*Whose everything?*
No response.
Minutes passed.
Then an email arrived.
From Daniel.
Attached was a document.
A loan agreement.
My name was listed as a beneficiary.
But David’s signature was the only one present.
I read the details.
And my blood went cold.
The account wasn’t just savings.
It was connected to a debt.
A massive one.
I looked at Margaret.
“What is this?””
She read the document.
Her face turned pale.
“Oh my God.””
“What?””
She looked at me.
“Elena…”
“What?””
Her voice shook.
“David wasn’t just planning to leave you.””
My heart raced.
“Then what was he planning?””
She pointed to the document.
“He was planning to make you responsible for his financial problems.””
I felt numb.
The wedding.
The affair.
The lies.
Was everything connected?
I stood up.
“I need to talk to him.””
Margaret grabbed my arm.
“Be careful.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because if he realizes you know everything…”
She stopped.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“If David loses control, he becomes dangerous.””
I froze.
Not because she said he was dangerous.
Because she looked like she had seen that side of him before.
That evening, I went home.
But David was already there.
Standing outside my apartment.
Waiting.
My heart pounded.
“How did you get here?””
He looked at me.
“We need to talk.””
I stepped back.
“About the account?””
His expression changed.
Just for a second.
But it was enough.
“You know.””
“Yes.””
He closed his eyes.
“Elena…”
“What were you going to do?””
He didn’t answer.
“What was I supposed to be responsible for?””
His face tightened.
Then he said something I never expected.
“I was trying to save you from my family.””
I stared at him.
“You mean your debt?””
His silence confirmed it.
Then he whispered:
“You don’t understand what Margaret did.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
I looked him in the eyes.
“I finally understand what you did.””
His expression changed.
May you like
And then he said the one sentence that made me realize the truth was even darker.
“Before you judge me, ask Margaret why she was the one who paid off my debt.””
