Chapter 9: The Warning Before the Storm

After the call ended, nobody spoke.

The silence was worse than the threat itself.

Because everyone in that room understood the same thing.

Someone had been watching us.

Someone knew we were searching.

My father immediately took my phone.

“Did you recognize the voice?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Rachel looked terrified.

“You need to leave this house.””

My father turned.

“You think I don’t know that?””

“No.””

Rachel stepped closer.

“I mean leave everything behind.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at me sadly.

“It means Ethan wasn’t trying to destroy you.””

My father frowned.

“Explain.””

Rachel hesitated.

“He was trying to control where you would go.””

I didn’t understand.

“What?””

She looked at the documents on the table.

“Your identity. Your finances. Your marriage. Your family.””

She pointed at the hidden folder.

“He built a cage.””

My stomach turned.

“And why?””

Rachel whispered:

“Because your father has something the Carter family has wanted for years.””

My father became tense.

“What?””

Rachel looked at him.

“The original evidence.””

I looked between them.

“What evidence?””

My father didn’t answer.

And that scared me.

Because once again, I was standing in the middle of secrets.

Everyone knew something except me.

I slammed my hand on the table.

“Enough.””

Both of them looked at me.

“I am done being protected.””

My voice shook.

“But I am also done being lied to.””

My father’s face softened.

“Claire…”

“No.””

I wiped my tears.

“I lost years with you because Ethan convinced me you were the enemy.””

I looked at him.

“And now I find out you were hiding things too.””

My father looked down.

“You’re right.””

The honesty surprised me.

“I should have trusted you with the truth.””

I sat down slowly.

“Then tell me.””

He took a deep breath.

“The evidence is connected to your mother’s final investigation.””

Rachel nodded.

“Ethan’s father believed your mother left a copy somewhere.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

My father looked at me.

“With you.””

I froze.

“What?””

“He believed your mother gave the evidence to someone she trusted.””

A horrible realization formed.

“Me?””

My father nodded.

“You were only a child.””

I touched my necklace.

A necklace my mother gave me before she died.

“Wait.””

Both of them looked at me.

“My mother gave me something that night.””

My father stood.

“What?””

I pulled the necklace from my neck.

A small silver pendant.

“She said it was important.””

My father stared at it.

“Claire…”

“What?””

His face changed.

“That pendant.””

I looked down.

“What about it?””

He walked closer.

“Your mother didn’t give that to you.””

My heart stopped.

“Then who did?””

My father’s voice became quiet.

“She gave it to me.””

A chill went through my body.

“But I’ve had it since I was little.””

“Yes.””

He looked at the pendant.

“Because I put the evidence inside it.””

The room went silent.

Rachel covered her mouth.

“No…”

My hands trembled.

“You mean all this time…”

My father nodded.

“The proof everyone has been searching for was around your neck.””

Before I could respond, the front window shattered.

Everyone screamed.

My father pushed me down instantly.

Glass fell across the floor.

Rachel ducked.

Then we heard footsteps outside.

Someone was coming.

My father looked toward the door.

His expression changed.

Because he recognized the person standing outside.

And when he whispered the name, my blood turned cold.

“Ethan.””
