Chapter 12: The Choice Ethan Made
The room felt smaller with Diane standing there.
The woman who had once brought me soup when I was sick.
The woman who called me “daughter.””
The woman who had smiled at my baby bump.
Now she stood in my home with strangers behind her.
Looking at me like I was a problem to solve.
“Diane…”
My voice barely came out.
She tilted her head.
“Yes, Claire?””
“How long?””
She smiled faintly.
“How long what?””
“How long have you been lying to me?””
She looked almost amused.
“Since before you met me.””
I felt Ethan move beside me.
“Enough.””
Diane turned.
“You don’t give orders.””
Her eyes narrowed.
“You were always weak.””
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“No.””
She laughed.
“You think because you grew a conscience, you’re different?””
I looked at Ethan.
Something changed in his expression.
Pain.
Regret.
But also anger.
“You used me.””
Diane shrugged.
“We used everyone.””
My father stepped forward.
“You manipulated your own son.””
Diane looked at him.
“You manipulated yours.””
The words hit.
Because she wasn’t wrong about one thing.
Everyone in this room had made choices without telling me.
Everyone thought they were protecting me.
Everyone forgot I had the right to choose.
Diane pointed toward the pendant.
“Give it to me.””
Nobody moved.
Her smile disappeared.
“Now.””
Ethan stepped forward.
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
Even me.
Diane laughed.
“You’re choosing her?””
Ethan looked at me.
Then at his mother.
“Yes.””
The answer was quiet.
But it changed everything.
Diane’s expression turned cold.
“After everything I did for you?””
Ethan shook his head.
“You didn’t do anything for me.””
His voice cracked.
“You used me.””
For the first time, Diane looked surprised.
My father moved closer to the door.
“Claire, take the evidence.””
I grabbed the memory card.
One of the men behind Diane stepped forward.
But Ethan blocked him.
“Don’t.””
The man laughed.
“You think you can stop us?””
Ethan didn’t move.
“I know exactly what you’re capable of.””
Diane stared at him.
“You were always afraid.””
Ethan looked at her.
“Yes.””
A pause.
“But I’m not anymore.””
The next few seconds happened quickly.
My father pulled me behind him.
Rachel grabbed the phone and called for help.
The men moved.
But Ethan stopped them.
Not because he was stronger.
Because he knew them.
He knew how they thought.
He knew where they would step.
For the first time, I saw the man Ethan could have been.
Not the man who lied.
Not the man who abandoned me.
The man who finally chose to do something right.
Diane backed toward the door.
“You’re making a mistake.””
Ethan looked at her.
“No.””
His voice was calm.
“I made my mistake three years ago.””
She stared.
“When I married Claire?””
He looked at me.
“No.””
His eyes softened.
“When I thought I could save everyone by lying.””
Sirens sounded outside.
Diane’s face changed.
“You called the police?””
My father smiled slightly.
“Your mistake was thinking we were alone.””
The front door opened.
Officers entered.
Everything happened at once.
Voices.
Footsteps.
Commands.
But I only watched Ethan.
Because even after everything…
Even after all the lies…
I saw something in his face.
Regret.
Real regret.
Later, as the house finally became quiet, I sat on the couch.
The same couch where I had collapsed.
Ethan stood several feet away.
He didn’t approach.
Maybe he knew he didn’t deserve to.
“Claire.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He swallowed.
“There’s something else you need to know.””
I felt exhausted.
“What now?””
His eyes lowered.
“The reason Diane came tonight…”
A pause.
“She wasn’t here for the evidence.””
My heart tightened.
“Then why?””
Ethan looked toward my stomach.
May you like
And whispered:
“She was here because she knew about the baby.””
