Chapter 7: The File Hidden Behind My Name
The first thing I did after leaving the hospital was go home.
Not because I wanted to.
Because I needed answers.
The house that once felt like my safe place suddenly looked unfamiliar.
Every picture on the wall.
Every piece of furniture.
Every memory.
Everything felt like it belonged to someone else.
My father stood beside me as we entered the living room.
The same room where I had been lying on the floor only days before.
The same place where my husband had thrown money at me.
I stopped when I saw the corner of the carpet.
A few bills were still there.
Ethan had missed them.
I stared at the money.
My father noticed.
“Claire.””
I shook my head.
“I’m okay.””
But I wasn’t.
Because I finally understood something.
The cruelest moment of my marriage wasn’t when Ethan walked away.
It was realizing he had probably never truly been there.
My father walked toward Ethan’s office.
I followed.
“You think there’s something inside?””
He nodded.
“When I investigated Ethan, I found pieces of information. But I never found everything.””
He opened the door.
The room smelled like Ethan.
His cologne.
His expensive coffee.
His carefully organized life.
A life that now looked like a performance.
I walked toward the desk.
“Where would he hide something?””
My father looked around.
“Somewhere he believes nobody would look.””
I opened drawers.
Nothing.
Files.
Nothing.
Then I noticed something.
A small scratch on the wooden panel behind the bookshelf.
I touched it.
“This wasn’t here before.””
My father moved closer.
Together, we pushed the shelf.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a black folder.
My hands went cold.
My father didn’t touch it.
“Claire…”
I looked at him.
“This is mine.””
I pulled it out.
On the front was one word.
*CARTER.*
I opened it.
The first page was a photograph.
Me.
Walking out of a coffee shop.
I frowned.
“When was this taken?””
My father looked closer.
“Before you met Ethan.””
I turned the page.
Another photo.
Me at work.
Another.
Me leaving my apartment.
My stomach tightened.
“He was watching me.””
My father’s expression hardened.
“Yes.””
I kept flipping.
Then I found something that made my entire body freeze.
A list.
My name.
My daily schedule.
My favorite places.
My routines.
Everything.
“He studied me.””
My voice became barely a whisper.
My father placed a hand on my shoulder.
“I’m sorry.””
I looked at the pages.
“How did I not see this?””
“Because he wanted you to see something else.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
“A man who needed you.””
The answer hurt.
Because it was true.
Ethan had never approached me like a stranger.
He approached me like someone who already knew exactly what I wanted.
A man who remembered small details.
A man who appeared at the right moments.
A man who made me feel chosen.
But maybe I wasn’t chosen.
Maybe I was selected.
A noise came from upstairs.
We both froze.
My father immediately stepped in front of me.
“Stay here.””
I grabbed his arm.
“No.””
I was tired of being protected from the truth.
We walked upstairs together.
The hallway was empty.
But my old bedroom door was slightly open.
I pushed it.
Inside, everything looked normal.
Until I saw the bed.
A suitcase was sitting on top.
Not mine.
Ethan’s.
My father opened it.
Inside were clothes.
Documents.
And a second phone.
My heart dropped.
“He kept a second phone?””
My father picked it up carefully.
“Don’t touch anything else.””
The phone was locked.
But there was a notification glowing on the screen.
A message preview.
One sentence.
My blood ran cold.
*“The baby is the last thing we need to worry about. The real problem is Claire’s father.””*
I stared at the screen.
The room suddenly felt impossible to breathe in.
My father looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw fear in his eyes.
May you like
Because Ethan wasn’t just hiding a past.
He was still involved in something happening now.
