Chapter 2: The Man I Left Behind
My father had always been a calm man.
That was what scared people about him.
He didn’t need to raise his voice.
He didn’t need to threaten anyone.
When he was angry, he became quieter.
And that night, standing in my living room, he looked like a man who had spent years controlling every emotion inside him.
“Claire,” he said softly, kneeling beside me.
“Can you stand?””
I nodded weakly.
“I think so.””
He immediately looked at the men behind him.
“Get the doctor on the phone.””
Ethan stared.
“The doctor?””
My father didn’t even look at him.
“Yes. The private emergency doctor who has been waiting for my call.””
Ethan’s face tightened.
“You called a doctor before you even arrived?””
My father finally turned.
“You’re asking that?””
His voice was calm.
“That is what surprises you?””
Diane stepped forward.
“This is unnecessary. Claire is just being emotional.””
My father looked at her.
For the first time, I saw Diane lose confidence.
“You watched my daughter collapse.””
His words were quiet.
“You watched her ask for help.””
Diane crossed her arms.
“She was never in danger.””
My father glanced at the cash on the floor.
“Then why did your son give her taxi money instead of taking her himself?””
No one answered.
The paramedic bag arrived moments later.
A woman checked my blood pressure while another examined my stomach.
I held onto my father’s hand.
I hadn’t held his hand in years.
And somehow, in that moment, I felt like a little girl again.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
My father looked down.
“For what?””
“For calling you.””
His expression changed.
Pain crossed his face.
“Claire, you are my daughter.””
I looked away.
“I thought you hated me.””
The room went silent.
Because Ethan knew exactly why I believed that.
Three years earlier, when I married him, Ethan told me my father was controlling.
He said my family was toxic.
He slowly convinced me that everyone who loved me was trying to control my life.
And I believed him.
I stopped answering my father’s calls.
I stopped visiting home.
I chose Ethan.
My father squeezed my hand.
“I never hated you.””
My eyes filled with tears.
“Then why didn’t you come?””
He looked at Ethan.
“I came every time.””
My breath caught.
“What?””
My father’s expression hardened.
“I came to your old apartment twice. Your husband told me you didn’t want to see me.””
I turned toward Ethan.
“What?””
Ethan looked away.
“Claire, don’t do this right now.””
My father stood.
“No. She deserves to know.””
Ethan’s voice became defensive.
“You were always interfering.””
“I was trying to reach my daughter.””
“You were trying to control her.””
My father stared at him.
“And you isolated her.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Because deep down, I knew they were true.
The doctor finished checking me.
“The baby’s heartbeat is stable,” she said.
“But you need to go to the hospital immediately.””
Relief washed over me.
My baby was okay.
For now.
As the men helped me stand, Ethan stepped closer.
“Claire, wait.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
His confident expression was gone.
“I think we need to talk privately.””
I almost laughed.
“Privately?””
His eyes moved toward my father.
“You don’t understand what’s happening.””
My father stepped between us.
“I understand enough.””
Ethan lowered his voice.
“You have no idea what your daughter has done.””
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Ethan looked at me.
And for the first time, I saw something different in his eyes.
Not anger.
Fear.
“You should ask your father why he never told you the truth.””
My father’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But I noticed.
Because I knew him.
“Dad?””
He didn’t answer.
“Why is Ethan saying that?””
My father looked at the floor.
Then at me.
“Claire…”
The way he said my name made my heart sink.
Because whatever he was about to say had been hidden from me for a long time.
And before he could continue, Ethan smiled faintly.
A cruel, knowing smile.
“Tell her.””
My father’s jaw tightened.
“Not here.””
Ethan stepped back.
“Of course.””
He looked at me.
“Because if she knows what really happened, she’ll never look at you the same way again.””
I felt cold.
Even though I was surrounded by people.
Even though my father was standing beside me.
May you like
Because suddenly I wasn’t just wondering why Ethan abandoned me.
I was wondering what my own father had been hiding.
