Chapter 14: The Family War

The next morning, I woke up feeling like I had lived an entire lifetime in a few days.

My marriage.

My mother’s death.

My father’s secrets.

Ethan’s lies.

Everything I believed about my life had changed.

But one thing remained clear.

My baby needed me.

And I needed to stop being afraid.

My father found me sitting in the kitchen.

“You should be resting.””

I looked at him.

“I’m tired of resting while everyone else decides my future.””

He sat across from me.

“You’re right.””

That answer surprised me.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because I was wrong.””

He looked older than he had a week ago.

“I thought protecting you meant carrying the burden alone.””

I softened.

“And it pushed me away.””

“Yes.””

A silence passed between us.

Then Ethan entered.

He stopped when he saw us.

“I can leave.””

I looked at him.

“No.””

He seemed surprised.

“Why?””

“Because I need answers.””

He nodded.

Fair.

He sat down.

For once, he didn’t try to defend himself.

My father placed the memory card on the table.

“There’s one thing we still don’t understand.””

Ethan looked at it.

“The inheritance.””

I watched his face carefully.

“You know something.””

He hesitated.

“My father’s family had an agreement.””

“What kind?””

“An agreement made generations ago.””

I frowned.

“That sounds impossible.””

“It is complicated.””

I crossed my arms.

“Explain.””

Ethan looked at me.

“The Carter family built their power by controlling information.””

My father nodded.

“Your mother discovered they had been hiding evidence for decades.””

Ethan continued.

“But she also found out something else.””

“What?””

He looked at my stomach.

“The Carter family believed the next generation would have a child who could expose everything.””

I felt a chill.

“That’s ridiculous.””

“I thought so too.””

“Then why are they afraid of my baby?””

Ethan looked away.

“Because they don’t know what your mother discovered.””

My father leaned forward.

“Your mother left clues.””

Ethan nodded.

“She believed someone would eventually try to take control of the evidence.””

“And she was right.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Ethan.

“Why did you really stay with me after you found out you loved me?””

He looked at me for a long time.

Then answered honestly.

“Because leaving meant putting you in danger.””

I shook my head.

“You still hurt me.””

“I know.””

His voice cracked.

“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.””

That honesty stopped me.

Because for the first time, he wasn’t trying to convince me.

He was accepting the consequences.

A knock interrupted us.

My father immediately stood.

Nobody was supposed to know where we were staying.

He opened the door.

A lawyer stood outside.

“I’m looking for Claire Morgan.””

My father stepped forward.

“Who are you?””

The man handed him an envelope.

“My name is Thomas Reed.””

He looked at me.

“I represent your mother’s estate.””

I froze.

“My mother’s estate?””

He nodded.

“There is something your mother left behind.””

My father looked confused.

“What?””

Thomas looked at Ethan.

Then back at me.

“A letter.””

My heart raced.

“From my mother?””

“Yes.””

He handed it to me.

The envelope was old.

My name was written on it.

Again.

But this time, there was something different.

A warning.

On the back, my mother had written:

*Do not trust anyone who says they are protecting you.*

My fingers shook.

I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

The first sentence made my blood run cold.

*Claire, if you are reading this, then the man you married already knows the truth.*

I looked up.

Slowly.

At Ethan.

His face had gone pale.

Because he knew exactly what my mother meant.

May you like

And that was when I realized something.

There was still one secret Ethan had not told me.
