Chapter 11: The Family Behind the Lies
I couldn’t speak.
The words didn’t make sense.
Ethan’s mother.
Diane.
The woman who stood in my house while I was collapsing.
The woman who told me pregnant women had survived for thousands of years.
The woman who watched her son leave me alone.
“No.””
Ethan looked down.
My father turned toward him.
“You knew?””
Ethan didn’t answer.
That was enough.
My father’s voice became dangerous.
“You knew.””
“I found out later.””
“When?””
Ethan looked at me.
“After we were married.””
I felt a wave of anger.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
His face tightened.
“Because by then, you were already involved.””
“Involved?””
He stepped closer.
“Claire, my father knew about the pendant.””
I touched it again.
“And?””
“He knew you had it.””
A chill went through me.
“You mean…”
“Yes.””
Ethan’s voice cracked.
“He knew exactly who you were.””
I thought back.
Our first meeting.
The way Ethan appeared.
The way he seemed too perfect.
The way he always knew what to say.
“You were sent to me.””
His eyes filled with regret.
“Yes.””
I looked away.
The truth hurt more than any lie.
My father walked toward Ethan.
“You should have protected her.””
“I tried.””
“No.””
My father’s voice was cold.
“You protected the secret.””
Ethan didn’t argue.
Because he knew it was true.
Rachel sat down.
Her hands were shaking.
“Diane was the one who convinced Ethan’s father that Claire had the evidence.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“Because your mother discovered their plan.””
“What plan?””
Rachel looked at the pendant.
“The Carter family wanted to use your father’s company to hide stolen money.””
My father nodded slowly.
“And your mother found proof.””
I looked at Ethan.
“And you?””
He closed his eyes.
“I was young.””
“That’s not an answer.””
He nodded.
“I helped them at first.””
The room went silent.
I felt like the floor disappeared beneath me.
“You helped them?””
“I didn’t know what they were planning.””
“You still helped.””
“Yes.””
The honesty was unbearable.
I turned away.
Because part of me wanted him to deny everything.
I wanted him to say everyone was wrong.
But he didn’t.
He just stood there with the consequences.
My father walked to the table and picked up the pendant.
“Your mother trusted the wrong people.””
He looked at Ethan.
“And I almost let history repeat itself.””
Ethan looked at him.
“What do you mean?””
My father didn’t answer.
Instead, he opened the pendant.
A tiny compartment inside revealed a small memory card.
Rachel gasped.
“The evidence.””
My heart raced.
All these years.
Everything my mother died protecting.
Everything that destroyed my family.
It was here.
My father carefully removed the card.
Then suddenly—
The lights went out.
Everyone froze.
Darkness covered the house.
A second later, the sound of the back door opening echoed through the hallway.
My father immediately grabbed my arm.
“Get down.””
A shadow moved.
Then another.
Someone was inside.
Ethan reacted instantly.
He stepped in front of me.
Not my father.
Not Rachel.
Me.
For the first time in years, his action didn’t feel calculated.
It felt instinctive.
A flashlight turned on.
A voice came from the darkness.
“You should have given us the pendant years ago.””
My blood ran cold.
Because I recognized the voice.
Diane.
Ethan’s mother stepped into the room.
And she wasn’t alone.
Two men stood behind her.
She looked at her son.
“You disappoint me.””
Ethan stared at her.
“You threatened my wife.””
Diane smiled.
“No.””
May you like
Her eyes moved to me.
“I threatened the woman who was never supposed to survive long enough to find the truth.””
