Chapter 8: The Man Who Chose His Father Over Me
I expected anger.
I expected shouting.
I expected to hate Daniel.
But when he finally admitted the truth, what I felt was something worse.
Nothing.
The love I had carried for him for years felt like a room after everyone left.
Empty.
“You should go,” I said.
Daniel looked at me.
“Phoebe…”
“No.””
My voice was calm.
“That’s the first honest thing you’ve given me.””
He flinched.
Claire quietly left the room.
Grandpa stayed.
Not to control the conversation.
Just to make sure I wasn’t alone.
Daniel looked at the floor.
“I loved you.””
I almost believed him.
That was the terrifying part.
Because people can love someone and still destroy them.
“I loved you too.””
His eyes lifted.
“But love isn’t what you did when it became inconvenient.””
He nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“Do you?””
I stepped closer.
“You watched me stand there in that dress.””
His face tightened.
“You watched me believe in you.””
“I know.””
“You watched me fall.””
His voice broke.
“I know.””
I turned away.
Because I didn’t want him to see the tears.
Not anymore.
After everything, he didn’t deserve the proof that he still had the power to hurt me.
“Why Vanessa?””
Daniel went quiet.
I looked back.
“Why bring her there?””
He swallowed.
“My father wanted maximum damage.””
The answer made me sick.
“Maximum damage?””
“He wanted the board to see you as emotional. Weak. Unstable.””
I laughed quietly.
“So my humiliation was strategy.””
“Yes.””
Daniel looked ashamed.
“I was supposed to announce the marriage was canceled, create a scandal, then challenge your grandfather’s decisions.””
“And Vanessa?””
“She was supposed to prove you were replaced.””
My chest tightened.
That was the part I couldn’t understand.
The cruelty.
Not just leaving me.
Making sure everyone watched.
Daniel stepped closer.
“I never wanted to hurt you like that.””
“But you did.””
“Yes.””
No excuses.
No defense.
Just a confession.
My phone rang.
Grandpa answered.
His expression changed.
“What?””
I watched him listen.
Then stand.
“What happened?””
He ended the call.
“Richard’s lawyers filed an emergency injunction.””
My stomach dropped.
“What does that mean?””
“They are attempting to freeze certain Sterling assets until the ownership dispute is resolved.””
Daniel looked shocked.
“My father wouldn’t have enough evidence for that.””
Grandpa looked at him.
“You’re surprised?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
Grandpa turned to me.
“Phoebe, we need to move quickly.””
“Do we have a chance?””
He looked at me.
Not like a child.
Like an equal.
“Yes.””
That surprised me.
“Why?””
“Because your mother prepared for this.””
He handed me another folder.
Inside were documents.
Old documents.
“What is this?””
“A trust agreement.””
I read the first page.
My name appeared.
“What does this mean?””
Grandpa sat down.
“Your mother created a protection clause.””
“For what?””
“For Sterling Enterprises.””
I looked confused.
“She knew someone might try to take it.””
He nodded.
“She built a safeguard.””
I kept reading.
Then I saw something impossible.
A signature.
My mother’s.
And another signature.
Richard Crawford’s.
I looked up.
“Why did Richard sign this?””
Grandpa’s expression darkened.
“Because twenty years ago, he promised your mother he would protect the company.””
I stared.
“And he broke that promise.””
“Yes.””
Before I could ask more, the office doors opened.
A lawyer rushed in.
“Mr. Sterling.””
“What now?””
The lawyer looked at me.
“I’m sorry, but there’s been another development.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
He placed a tablet on the desk.
“Richard Crawford has released a statement.””
Grandpa opened it.
I watched his face change.
“What does it say?””
He handed me the tablet.
The headline appeared.
CRAWFORD FAMILY CLAIMS STERLING HEIRESS WAS INVOLVED IN FRAUD.
Below it was a video.
Richard sitting in front of cameras.
Looking calm.
Looking sincere.
“My family has always respected Sterling Enterprises,” he said.
Then he looked directly into the camera.
“But unfortunately, Phoebe Bennett has manipulated her grandfather’s trust for personal gain.””
I felt anger rise.
“He’s lying.””
Grandpa nodded.
“Yes.””
But then the video continued.
And Richard said something that made me freeze.
“We have evidence from someone inside Sterling Enterprises.””
The screen changed.
A document appeared.
A signature.
My signature.
Except I had never signed it.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“That’s impossible.””
I looked at him.
“Why?””
His face turned pale.
“Because I’ve seen that document before.””
The room went silent.
“Where?””
May you like
Daniel whispered:
“In my father’s office.””
