Chapter 13: The Woman Behind the Betrayal
The room went silent after my father’s final words.
Daniel’s mother knew everything.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
It was as if the entire world had stopped to process what we had just heard.
Then Daniel stood.
“No.””
The word came out like a denial and a prayer at the same time.
“My mother didn’t know.””
Grandpa looked at him.
“Are you sure?””
Daniel’s face changed.
Because suddenly, he wasn’t sure.
I watched him struggle with something I had already experienced.
The pain of realizing the people you trusted were not who you thought they were.
“My mother loved my father,” Daniel said quietly.
Victoria shook her head.
“That doesn’t mean she wasn’t afraid of him.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You don’t know her.””
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“I knew people like her.””
“What does that mean?””
“It means some people confuse loyalty with survival.””
The words hit him.
Daniel looked away.
The room felt heavier with every second.
Grandpa replayed the recording.
This time, we listened carefully.
My father’s voice continued after the line about Evelyn Crawford.
“If Evelyn helps him, she must have a reason.””
A pause.
“Richard controls everyone through fear. But Evelyn…”
The recording became distorted.
Then:
“Evelyn knows the truth about Phoebe’s mother.””
The audio ended.
I stared at the screen.
“What truth?””
Nobody answered.
That scared me.
Because everyone seemed to know more about my life than I did.
I turned to Grandpa.
“What happened to my mother?””
His eyes filled with regret.
“I don’t know everything.””
“But you know something.””
He nodded slowly.
“Your mother discovered Richard was planning to take control of Sterling through legal manipulation.””
“And Evelyn?””
“She helped him cover his tracks.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“Daniel.””
He opened his eyes.
“My mother wasn’t like that.””
I wanted to believe him.
Because I knew what it felt like to defend someone you loved.
But sometimes love was just another name for refusing to see.
My phone rang.
The screen showed an unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s voice came through.
“Phoebe.””
I froze.
I knew that voice.
Evelyn Crawford.
“Why are you calling me?””
There was silence.
Then:
“Because my son deserves to know the truth.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“Mom?””
The voice continued.
“Richard is not the only person who destroyed your family.””
My grip tightened around the phone.
“Where are you?””
“I want to meet.””
“No.””
Daniel spoke immediately.
Everyone looked at him.
He took the phone.
“Mom, what did you do?””
A long pause.
Then Evelyn said:
“I protected you.””
Daniel’s face fell.
“Protected me from what?””
Her answer was quiet.
“From becoming your father.””
The call ended.
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Daniel grabbed his coat.
“I’m going.””
I stood.
“Daniel.””
He looked at me.
“I need answers.””
I understood.
Because I needed them too.
An hour later, we met Evelyn at an empty restaurant outside the city.
She looked different.
No expensive jewelry.
No perfect makeup.
No confidence.
Just a woman who looked like she had been carrying a secret for too long.
She looked at Daniel first.
“I’m sorry.””
He stared at her.
“Sorry for what?””
Her eyes filled.
“For everything.””
I watched Daniel’s face.
He wanted to be angry.
But he also wanted his mother to tell him he was wrong.
“Did you know?”” he asked.
Evelyn looked down.
“Yes.””
The answer destroyed him.
“About my father?””
“Yes.””
“About Phoebe’s mother?””
“Yes.””
He stepped back.
“You knew she was in danger.””
Evelyn started crying.
“I tried to stop him.””
“Did you?””
“No.””
The honesty was brutal.
“I was afraid.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“So you watched.””
“Yes.””
“And you let him use me.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“I thought I could protect you.””
I almost interrupted.
But Daniel did.
“Everyone says that.””
His voice broke.
“Everyone says they were protecting me.””
Evelyn looked at me.
“I’m sorry, Phoebe.””
I didn’t answer.
Because apologies could not bring back years.
They could not return my mother.
They could not erase the wedding.
They could not undo the lies.
“Why tell us now?””
Evelyn reached into her bag.
She pulled out a small envelope.
“Because Richard kept something from me.””
She handed it to me.
“What is it?””
“Proof.””
I opened it.
Inside was a document.
A confession.
Signed by Richard Crawford.
My hands shook.
“He wrote this?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Evelyn looked terrified.
“Because he thought he would never need it.””
I read the first line.
If anything happens to me, the Sterling matter must be resolved by—
I stopped.
There was a blank space.
A missing name.
“What is this?””
Evelyn whispered:
“The final piece.””
Before I could ask, her phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face turned pale.
“What?””
She listened.
Then stood suddenly.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She dropped the phone.
“He escaped.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who?””
May you like
Evelyn looked at us.
“Richard.””
