Chapter 11: The Last Message From My Mother

Richard walked into the room like he owned it.

That was the thing about him.

Even when he was exposed, even when everyone knew what he had done, he still carried himself like he was untouchable.

Behind him were two attorneys.

And a security team.

Victoria immediately stepped back.

Richard looked at her.

“I’m disappointed.””

She laughed bitterly.

“Disappointed?””

“Yes.””

“You destroyed my sister’s life.””

His expression didn’t change.

“You’re still blaming me?””

I felt something inside me snap.

“Are you serious?””

Everyone looked at me.

“You lied to my family for twenty years.””

Richard looked at me.

“You have no idea what happened.””

“Then explain.””

He smiled slightly.

“That’s the problem with people like you.””

“People like me?””

“People who inherit everything.””

My hands tightened.

“You think I don’t deserve it.””

“I think you never earned it.””

The words hit.

But this time, they didn’t break me.

Because I finally understood.

This was never about money.

It was about control.

Richard wanted me to feel small.

The same way he wanted my mother to feel small.

Grandpa stepped beside me.

“She is more than her inheritance.””

Richard laughed.

“Charles, you always were sentimental.””

“And you always were greedy.””

For the first time, Richard’s face changed.

Just for a second.

Anger.

Victoria noticed too.

“Why are you really here?””

Richard looked at her.

“To finish what we started.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

He stepped closer.

“You should have stayed gone.””

I looked at Victoria.

“What did you start?””

She looked ashamed.

“The original takeover plan.””

Richard smiled.

“Your aunt was very ambitious.””

Victoria’s face hardened.

“And you used me.””

“Of course I did.””

The honesty shocked everyone.

Richard continued.

“You thought you were my partner.””

He laughed.

“You were just useful.””

Victoria looked devastated.

And I understood something.

Richard didn’t love anyone.

Not his son.

Not his business partners.

Not even himself.

He only loved winning.

“Where is the box?”” Richard asked.

Victoria didn’t answer.

Richard looked at me.

“Your mother was clever.””

I froze.

“You knew her.””

“Yes.””

“Did you kill her?””

The room went silent.

Even Richard looked surprised.

Then he smiled.

“I knew you would ask that eventually.””

Grandpa stepped forward.

“Answer her.””

Richard looked at me.

“No.””

The answer came too quickly.

“I didn’t kill your mother.””

I watched his face.

A lie?

The worst part was that I couldn’t tell anymore.

“But I did make sure she couldn’t stop me.””

Victoria whispered:

“What did you do?””

Richard ignored her.

“She found documents that threatened everything.””

“What documents?””

He smiled.

“The same ones you’re looking for.””

My heart raced.

“The safety deposit box.””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Richard looked at Victoria.

“She has the key.””

Victoria shook her head.

“I’ll never give it to you.””

Richard sighed.

“Then I’ll take it.””

The security team moved forward.

Daniel stepped between them.

“No.””

Everyone froze.

Richard looked at his son.

“Move.””

Daniel didn’t.

For once, he stood against him.

“You’ve ruined enough lives.””

Richard stared at him.

“You’re defending her?””

Daniel looked at me.

Then back at his father.

“I’m defending the truth.””

A strange emotion crossed my chest.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

But something close to respect.

Richard laughed.

“You think this changes anything?””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.””

Richard shook his head.

“You’re weak.””

“No.””

Daniel looked at him.

“I was weak when I followed you.””

Silence.

Then police sirens sounded outside.

Richard’s face changed.

Grandpa looked at him.

“You didn’t think I came unprepared, did you?””

Richard turned toward the door.

Police entered seconds later.

The attorneys immediately stepped back.

Richard looked furious.

“This isn’t over.””

The officers escorted him away.

But before leaving, he looked at me.

“You think you won?””

I stared back.

“Yes.””

He smiled.

“That’s what your mother thought too.””

The words followed me after he was gone.

Back at Grandpa’s house, Victoria finally gave us the key.

The safety deposit box was opened that evening.

Inside was one envelope.

One flash drive.

And one final letter.

My mother’s handwriting.

I opened it with shaking hands.

Phoebe,

If you are reading this, then Richard failed to silence the truth.

I held my breath.

But there is something you must know.

The person who betrayed me was not Richard.

My eyes moved to the next line.

And my entire body went cold.

It was someone I trusted more than anyone.

I looked at Grandpa.

Then Victoria.

Then Daniel.

The letter continued.

Someone in this family knew what Richard was doing.

And beneath those words was a name.

May you like

A name that made Grandpa whisper:

“No…”
