Chapter 14: The Final Game Richard Crawford Played
Richard Crawford was gone.
The news spread within an hour.
The man who had spent decades controlling everyone around him had disappeared before authorities could question him.
Grandpa was furious.
“This was planned.””
Daniel looked sick.
“My father always had an exit.””
I looked at him.
“You knew?””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“But I should have.””
Nobody blamed him.
Not anymore.
But I could see he blamed himself.
The next morning, Grandpa called an emergency meeting.
Not a board meeting.
A family meeting.
For the first time in my life, everyone was in one room because of the truth.
Grandpa placed Richard’s confession on the table.
“The document is incomplete.””
Victoria frowned.
“But it was signed.””
“Yes.””
“Then why is the name missing?””
Grandpa looked at me.
“Because Richard wanted someone else to fill it in.””
I didn’t understand.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at the document.
Then suddenly froze.
“Wait.””
Everyone turned.
“What?””
He pointed.
“The signature.””
I looked closer.
At the bottom was Richard’s signature.
And beneath it was another mark.
A company seal.
Not Crawford Holdings.
Sterling Enterprises.
My heart sank.
“Someone inside Sterling helped him.””
Grandpa nodded.
“That’s what your father discovered.””
“But we already know who.””
Everyone looked at me.
“Evelyn.””
Daniel’s face tightened.
“My mother was involved.””
“Yes,” Grandpa said.
“But she was not the person controlling everything.””
I stared.
“What?””
Grandpa opened another file.
“Richard wasn’t the mastermind.””
The room went silent.
“Then who was?””
Grandpa looked at Victoria.
She looked confused.
Then scared.
“Charles?””
He placed an old photograph on the table.
It showed Richard.
Evelyn.
My mother.
My father.
And another person.
Someone standing behind them.
Someone I recognized.
My breath stopped.
“No.””
Grandpa nodded.
“Yes.””
The person in the photograph was my father.
But not the way I remembered him.
Young.
Confident.
Standing beside Richard.
“What is this?””
Victoria whispered:
“The first partnership.””
I looked at her.
“My father worked with Richard?””
“For a short time.””
“Why?””
Grandpa answered.
“Because he believed he could stop him from the inside.””
I stared at the photo.
All these years, I thought my father was just a victim.
But he had been part of the battle.
“He knew.””
“Yes.””
“And he failed.””
Grandpa looked at me.
“No.””
He pointed to the picture.
“He won.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“Your father created a backup plan.””
“What kind of plan?””
Grandpa handed me another folder.
Inside was a legal agreement.
I read the title.
STERLING LEGACY PROTECTION TRUST.
My name was written on it.
“This was created before I was born.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because your father and mother knew someone would eventually try to take Sterling.””
I turned the pages.
Then I saw something impossible.
The trust had one condition.
If Sterling Enterprises was ever threatened by an outside force…
The heir could activate full protection rights.
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Grandpa smiled sadly.
“It means you don’t need the board’s approval anymore.””
The room went quiet.
“What?””
“You are not fighting for control.””
He pointed at the document.
“You already have it.””
For the first time since my wedding day, I felt something different.
Not fear.
Not pain.
Strength.
Then Daniel’s phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed immediately.
“What?””
Everyone watched.
He listened.
Then slowly lowered the phone.
“What happened?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
“They found Richard.””
Relief moved through the room.
Then Daniel continued.
“But he wasn’t alone.””
My stomach dropped.
“Who was with him?””
Daniel swallowed.
“The person who helped him escape.””
He looked at the photograph.
“The person who has been hiding for twenty years.””
Grandpa stood.
“Who?””
Daniel’s answer was barely audible.
“Your aunt Victoria.””
The room exploded.
Victoria stepped back.
“No.””
But everyone was looking at her.
Even Grandpa.
Even me.
I looked at the woman who claimed she wanted the truth.
The woman who gave us the key.
The woman who said she regretted everything.
“Victoria…”
She looked at me.
Tears filled her eyes.
“I can explain.””
But before she could say anything, the lights went out.
The entire house went dark.
A second later, a message appeared on the security screen.
May you like
One sentence.
You trusted the wrong person again.
