Chapter 2: The Secret Behind My Name
The ballroom stayed silent after Grandpa’s announcement.
It wasn’t the kind of silence that came from respect.
It was the kind that came when people realized they had witnessed something they would talk about for years.
Daniel looked at me differently.
Not with love.
Not with regret.
With calculation.
I recognized that look immediately.
It was the same look he had when he first learned my grandfather was considering investing in Crawford Holdings.
The same look he had when he asked casual questions about my family.
“Does your grandfather personally approve every investment?””
“Does he trust you with business decisions?””
“Do you think Sterling Enterprises will expand internationally?””
At the time, I thought he was interested in my life.
Now I understood.
He had been studying my value.
Richard Crawford stepped closer.
“Charles, this is a misunderstanding.””
Grandpa laughed once.
A quiet, humorless sound.
“A misunderstanding is forgetting an appointment. This was a decision.””
Evelyn stood up.
“Phoebe, surely you don’t want to ruin years of business cooperation because of a personal disagreement.””
I looked at her.
A personal disagreement.
That was what she called watching her son betray me at the altar.
“My broken wrist is personal,” I said.
“Your son humiliating me in front of everyone is personal.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Phoebe, can we talk alone?””
I almost laughed.
Five minutes earlier, he had replaced me in front of everyone.
Now he wanted privacy.
“No.””
His eyebrows pulled together.
“You’re angry.””
“I’m awake.””
That made several guests look away.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“You’re making a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
“Yes.””
He glanced at Grandpa.
“You’re letting emotions affect business.””
I stared at him.
The irony was almost unbelievable.
“You’re the one who brought another woman into our wedding.””
Vanessa shifted uncomfortably.
“Daniel, maybe we should leave.””
But he ignored her.
“You don’t understand how complicated this is.””
I looked at the woman beside him.
“No, Daniel. I understand perfectly.””
The hotel staff stood frozen near the entrance.
The musicians had stopped playing.
The flowers that had been arranged for our perfect day were now surrounded by whispers.
Then Grandpa’s assistant rushed into the room.
“Mr. Sterling.””
Grandpa turned.
“What happened?””
The assistant handed him a tablet.
His expression changed as he read.
Not surprise.
Confirmation.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He looked at me.
“Something I should have told you before today.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“What?””
Grandpa glanced at Daniel.
Then Richard.
Then everyone watching.
“Not here.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
“I’m tired of secrets today.””
Grandpa studied my face.
Then slowly nodded.
“You’re right.””
He turned the tablet around.
On the screen was a document.
A corporate report.
And at the top was Daniel Crawford’s name.
My heart sank.
“What is that?””
Grandpa answered quietly.
“An investigation.””
Richard stepped forward.
“You had no right—”
Grandpa cut him off.
“I had every right. When someone wants access to my family, I protect my family.””
Daniel’s face changed.
For the first time, fear appeared.
“What investigation?””
Grandpa looked directly at him.
“The one that started six months ago.””
Six months.
That was when Daniel proposed.
That was when he suddenly became more attentive.
That was when he started saying things like, “I’ve never met anyone like you.””
My throat tightened.
“Grandpa…”
He looked at me with sadness.
“I wanted to believe I was wrong.””
Daniel shook his head.
“This is insane.””
Grandpa tapped the screen.
“The investigation found suspicious transfers from Crawford Holdings accounts.””
Richard became pale.
“Charles.””
“No,” Grandpa said.
“You don’t get to interrupt.””
Everyone watched.
“Money was moved through shell companies connected to someone close to Daniel.””
Daniel’s voice became sharp.
“You think I stole from you?””
“No.””
Grandpa’s eyes moved to Vanessa.
“I think you were planning to use my granddaughter to hide what you already did.””
The entire room erupted.
Whispers.
Gasps.
Questions.
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“You said everything was handled.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Not now.””
That one sentence told me more than anything else could have.
Vanessa’s face changed.
She realized she was not his partner.
She was his liability.
I stepped closer to Grandpa.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
His expression softened.
“Because you loved him.””
That hurt.
Because it was true.
“I thought if I was wrong, I would destroy something that mattered to you.””
I looked at Daniel.
The man I had planned to spend my life with.
The man who knew my favorite coffee order.
The man who held my hand when my mother died.
The man who had convinced me I was safe.
“Did you ever love me?””
The question escaped before I could stop it.
For one second, Daniel looked human.
Then it disappeared.
“You were never supposed to find out this way.””
I felt the last piece of my heart break.
Not because he admitted it.
Because he didn’t deny it.
Grandpa took my hand.
“Come home.””
I nodded.
As we walked toward the exit, Daniel’s voice followed.
“Phoebe!””
I stopped.
Everyone looked at him.
He stepped away from Vanessa.
“I can explain.””
I slowly turned around.
“Then explain.””
Daniel opened his mouth.
But before he spoke, his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
And suddenly all the confidence vanished from his face.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A pause.
Then his expression turned terrified.
“What do you mean the police are there?””
The room went silent again.
May you like
Because whoever was calling Daniel wasn’t asking him about the wedding.
They were calling about something much bigger.
