Chapter 9: The Last Chance To Tell The Truth

We arrived home twenty minutes later.

The house looked exactly the same.

That was the strangest part.

The same furniture.

The same pictures.

The same quiet hallway.

But everything felt different.

Like the walls had been holding secrets.

Dad walked inside first.

“Mia, stay here.””

She nodded.

For once, she listened.

I followed him.

The office door was open.

That immediately worried him.

“Did you leave it like this?”” I asked.

He shook his head.

“No.””

The filing cabinet was open.

Papers were scattered across the desk.

Someone had searched through everything.

Dad walked slowly toward the cabinet.

Then stopped.

“The folder.””

I looked.

The blue folder was gone.

My stomach dropped.

“She took it.””

Dad didn’t respond.

He was staring at something else.

A small piece of paper left on the desk.

He picked it up.

I watched his eyes move.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

He handed it to me.

It was a handwritten note.

*David, stop looking for answers that will only hurt your family. Some things are better left buried.*

I looked at him.

“That’s from Vanessa.””

He nodded.

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time, not from the unknown number.

From Vanessa.

*We need to talk before David makes a mistake. Meet me alone.*

I showed Dad.

He immediately shook his head.

“No.””

“I can go.””

“No.””

“Dad—”

“You don’t know what she’s capable of.””

Those words surprised me.

Because my father had always defended giving people chances.

But now?

He looked tired.

Not angry.

Just finished.

Then Mia walked into the office.

“I know where she went.””

We both turned.

Dad looked at her.

“What?””

Mia took a breath.

“I know where my mom keeps things when she doesn’t want anyone to find them.””

I stared at her.

“You’re helping us?””

She looked away.

“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.””

Nobody spoke.

“But I need to fix what I can.””

Dad studied her.

Then nodded.

“Where?””

Mia grabbed her jacket.

“She has a storage unit.””

The three of us drove there.

The entire way, nobody talked.

When we arrived, Mia unlocked the door.

Inside were boxes.

Dozens of them.

Old clothes.

Documents.

Photos.

Dad started searching.

I opened one box.

Inside were things from years ago.

Then I found something.

A small notebook.

I opened it.

The first page had Vanessa’s handwriting.

My heart started racing.

“Mia.””

She walked over.

“What?””

I held up the notebook.

Dad took it.

He read.

Then he stopped.

“What?””

He turned the notebook toward us.

It wasn’t a diary.

It was a list.

Dates.

Amounts.

Names.

And one sentence written at the top:

*“Things David must never know.””*

My hands became cold.

Dad flipped through the pages.

Then he saw something.

A name.

His own.

And underneath it…

A confession.

He whispered:

“She planned everything.””

Before we could read more, headlights appeared outside.

Someone had arrived.

Mia looked toward the door.

Her face went pale.

“That’s her.””

Dad closed the notebook.

“Vanessa.””

The storage door slowly opened.

And Vanessa stepped inside.

She looked at the three of us.

Then at the notebook in my father’s hand.

Her expression changed.

Not surprise.

Not fear.

Anger.

“You weren’t supposed to find that.””

Nobody spoke.

Dad stepped forward.

“Tell me the truth.””

Vanessa stared at him.

Then she smiled sadly.

And said:

“You really want the truth?””

She walked closer.

“Fine.””

She looked directly at me.

“Your mother wasn’t the perfect person you think she was.””

My heart stopped.

Because I knew that sentence was a lie.

May you like

But Vanessa said it with such confidence…

that for the first time, I wondered what else had been hidden from me.
